Let's do the 30th. What time do we want to do it at? 6ish?
-
This will probably be best in "General Discussion" since it doesn't really have to do with Brandon Sanderson. I'll leave a link from "General Brandon Discussion" though.
-
Is it comic book based? It seems comic book based. Fantastic 4?
-
I'd be in for either. Usually Tuesdays are a little less busy for me, but Saturdays work too.

Diren begins looking at the list of the invited parties to the King's Palace. "What odd names they have. And such diverse occupations. Pirates, and wanderers and kings, oh my" he muttered to himself, readying his note pad to go to the palace. "This should be interesting. Very interesting indeed."

Tor.com has just announced that Alcatraz will be (somewhat) illustrated. And the best part? The illustrator is a fan-artist. Much as Inkthinker/Ben McSweeny was chosen because of his fantastic fanart, Hayley Lazao/ Art-Zealot has been chosen for some of her great work. She's going to be doing some in-text illustrations for Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians- and probably the rest of the series. A whole bunch of the early sketches for these are on Tor.com, so you should check it out!

One thing interesting though- would Kaladin's lashings affect Vin's Steelpushes? Lashings work by manipulating an object's spiritual connection to the planet it's currently connected to. It seems likely that since allomancers that are heavier can Push harder, allomancers Push by copying their own spiritual connection and placing it on metal in a specific direction, (which is basically Lashing, just limited to metallic objects). So what would happen if Kaladin made Vin "weightless"? If he made the gravitational influence on her zero? Would that leave her unable to Push and Pull? If that happens, then Kaladin would almost certainly win. He would lash her weightless in the middle of the air, and then Vin couldn't do anything stuck 20 feet in the air with no good way to move.

Diren, a scholar who is a lover of history and of the arts is happy to be invited to the King's Court. He is fascinated with the secrets of the past, and finds many of the developments of the recent years fascinating, and slightly ironic. How easily roles reverse and change! I'm in! I'm excited for my first Sanderson elimination. EDIT- Also, what happens if the Odiv is one of the Lovers? Or if the Gyorn is chosen to be one of the lovers?

The Brandonothology was replaced with the much more comprehensive Interview Database. It's kept really recent, especially thanks to Weiry, who does an awesome job at inputting interviews and Q&As. Usually anything a month old or older is in there. The search is a little finicky- it only matches exact words, so if you search for shard, you won't catch shards. But you can also search by tags, which are generally helpful.

I initially wanted to say that the pools do exist, as it does for all Shards. But thinking back, we don't really know that. We know that Aona/Devotion had a shardpool, but she was dead. We know that Preservation had a shardpool, but he was pretty much dead. We know that Ruin had a shardpoolish in the Atium, but that was siphoning off power. I'm pretty sure that the pool that Rock mentions in the mountains is a shardpool, and that could easily be of now-deceased Honor. It's possible that pools only exist for weakened/dead shards. That's interesting. I don't know if it is true, but it's possible.

Her name is secretly Kaise. I'm in college! I enjoy it, but it's been somewhat similar to High School, because I was taking a lot of AP credits, etc in High School. I enjoy it, and (so far) don't have any debt. Though I don't think that'll last for long.....

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Zas678 replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
You will make it through. Yes, you have a hard test tomorrow. Yes, you've been going through some hard things. But guess what? You've made it through so far! You've done the practice tests, you've worked hard, you've learned new things! You'll be able to do the test as well. Yes, it'll be hard. But you've prepared for it! And if you don't do well? It's just a test. You'll still have learned new things and understand the world around you a little better. And if you do do well, good job! Sometimes it's nice to see hard work rewarded. We don't always get to see it rewarded. Sometimes the hard things we do only will reflect on the inside. Sometimes it'll just develop us for the things that are on the way. But sometimes we'll see the fruit of our labor. That's nice too. You can do it! Just do YOUR best. Not THE best. That's all you need to do. Good luck tomorrow! And good luck these next few weeks. There will be hard times, but remember what you've already accomplished. You've done hard things, and you can keep on doing them. -
Facepalm-worthy Moments during Readings
Zas678 replied to Patrick Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm pretty sure it is Dalinar and Eshonai. Source As for me, my most facepalm moment (although it was but a theory) was that in WoR, Shallan and Szeth would take the same boat to the Shattered Planes and would fall in love. I thought it would've been interesting, but looking back.... -
And if you did kill the spiritual ideal of fire, would it kill all fire? Or just one of them? EDIT- What would happen if Odium took up Cultivation?
-
Nah, he'll play Nazh.
-
If it's any consolation, I don't think any major plot points will be affected by crossover magic. Brandon said that he doesn't want people to have to read other series before other series, because that's just silly. It'll eventually happen (the rumored Hoid stories, or the last MB trilogy), but I don't think it'll be a major plot point in SA.
-
An old one that you can look at is Cosmere 101 (it was done before WoR). You can also check out the Coppermind Cosmere post. Or Hoid. EDIT- Basically, a long time ago on Yolen (Dragonsteel world), there was someone/thing named Adonalsium. Attempts to made to destroy it, possibly by an enemy force. Adonalsium was destroyed (whether by self or by other, is unclear). Supposedly 16 people/intellgient life forms (there are 3 different types on Yolen) who knew each other picked up the pieces. Hoid was offerred a piece but rejected it. These became the Shards of Adonalsium, each of which embodied an ideal. (The Principle of Intent, if you will). They then moved to different planets, some of which had intelligent life on it, others didn't (Scadrial). Some shards (like Ruin and Preservation), created man in their own image. But there was one shard that was malicious. Odium (which means hate), started changing worlds. It destroyed the shards on Sel (Elantris world), shattering them so that they couldn't be picked up. He then eventually traveled to Roshar where Honor and Cultivation were, and made a deal with them, which kept Odium nearby for thousands of years. Eventually Honor died. Odium was very nervous when he heard what occurred on Scadrial. Both Ruin and Preservation died, which he was delighted to hear, but a new person (Sazed) took both shards, and became (essentially) Harmony. This "new" shard was in charge of both Ruin and Preservation, and thus had double the power of any other shard. Meanwhile, other people were going from planet to planet as well. Hoid made appearances at many planets, eventually catching the attention of the Seventeenth Shard, an interworld organization. Hoid is determined to interfere to stop Odium, however he can. Others (such as the Seventeenth Shard in WoK and the recipient of the letter) are determined to not interfere. Others, such as Nazh (and possibly Khriss), seemed more interested in cataloging information than acting. That's what we pretty much know about the Cosmere, up to the time of WoR. The books have been mostly chronological, and we'll learn more as we go along. Also, if anyone notices something wrong in what I said (or wants to add something), go ahead and speak up. There's a lot of WoB out there, and it's very possible I got some things wrong.
-
I don't know. Ask the WoTers- they're STILL asking Brandon/Harriet questions.
-
I think you're taking this quote out of context. He wasn't talking about cosmere-level magic, he was talking about individual planet-level magic, specifically about counting how many magic systems vs if it's science or not. And this doesn't directly confirm or deny either- it just says if you become an Awakener, you don't have a breath- that's something native to Roshar. I suppose it is possible that having a breath has the "spiritual coding" inside of it to allow for Awakening, but it's not really stated in either of these WoB. Nice WoBing. I was looking for some of these, but I couldn't find them.
-
My personal theory is that the Suit is trying to not only try and breed a Mistborn/allomancer army, but is also trying to find Atium Mistings (which is why all the girls he kidnapped have strong allomantic lines, but no known powers). The timelines match up too closely for it to be a coincidence.
-
1) Hemalurgy questions are interesting. Let's use Hoid, as the most well known world hopper. As far as I understand, Hoid could go to Nalthis and spike someone there and gain the ability to transfer breaths, or an individual breath itself. I believe that without it, he could receive breath the normal way, and receive the benefits (like perfect pitch), but he couldn't Awaken. I believe that you can gain Breath (maybe even all the Breaths someone has) through spiking, but it's... less efficient than just asking them for it (or even threatening to spike them). It's possible that someone who spiked the ability to transfer breaths would be able to receive the breaths from objects that person invested. I'm not sure, and it would be kind of interesting, but I bet it would be possible. 2) I bet that burning bronze looks into the Spiritual Realm some, and allows you to "see" or "hear" someone drawing on the power of creation/investiture. I imagine all magic users would give off a type of pulse, and I bet that Atium, most definitely gives a pulse (I'm pretty sure it says so in the book). And I bet that a very talented Mistborn could "hear" two types of metals being used by someone, just like we can see two different types of lights, or hear two instruments at the same time. I bet they could communicate, but it would be difficult. It would be like communicating by alternating playing the viola and the cello. Someone very practiced could do it, but it would be hard. I don't think there was one about his snapping and escape (besides the little there is in the Final Empire), but there is one about his training in the Mistborn Adventure Game (a RPG game). Kelsier didn't meet Mare. She moved on a long time ago. Kelsier could choose to "move on", but we're not sure if he did or didn't by Alloy of Law. Mare would be one of the biggest draws to move on. I bet it could. But it would have to be so intense that it would be literally the most emotional moment in their life, by far. Something to be soul shattering.

I'm pretty sure the 1980s Mistborn is coming BEFORE SA 6-10. Other than that, looks great! Don't forget about Alcatraz 5 too, which is due to come out next yearish.

"Quick send her the leter" Twi goes unsuspectingly to her mailbox at her fortress, opens her mailbox, and sees..... Not that. Anything but that. She begins to quake, and begins to run. They have to know. Whoever sent it knows. She tries to engage her powers, but she knows they won't work. The last thing she hears is the explosion of gunfire. She falls to the ground. If only she had planned ahead. If only she had paid her bills.

Sorry, but you'll be waiting for a while for that. He's got SA3 (Christmas-ish 2016), then the AoL era book(Spring/Fall 2017), then Rithmatist 2 (Spring/Fall 2017), then SA4(2018ish). That's his likely layout for the next few years, plus a novella or two, (and White Sand). THEN we'll see Nightblood, or Elantris 2, or one of his other projects. So yeah. 2019ish. Don't worry, I'm in the same boat with Elantris 2.

Pretty sure it's done, just waiting on Tor to republish the original 4 so they can release 5. I've heard Januaryish for starting on republishing.
