  1. I beg to differ on this (same, on speculation). I bet that it either doesn't do anything, or it causes you to compound. After all, all it does with Allomancy is that it causes all of it to "flare" up in one big burst. It involuntarily forces that investiture pipe wide open. (On a side note, I wonder if someone on a Nicrosil high for long enough would do as Vin did?). If Nicrosil has an affect on Ferrings, I bet it does the same thing, and would force the Ferring to tap it all in a giant burst. And it would make Chromium super deadly. Can you imagine the affect of someone painstakingly storing luck for months and months and months, to have a Chromium touch you and drain it all away? However, the Ars Arcanum is an in-world artifact, and I bet that if Nicrosil had such an affect, it would be mentioned in the Ars Arcanum, as that doubles its usefulness. So I bet it doesn't do it, unless there's unusual circumstances.
  2. Okay. This isn't coming from zas678 the admin- just Zas the member. So this isn't neccessarily the will of the staff collectively. But for me- I like anonymous upvotes/downvotes. Yes, there is the capability for people to anonymously downvote some of your things that they don't like without you knowing about it. But let's look at what is the reputation system. Upvotes are a way of saying "Hey, I like this post. This is cool/funny/really intelligently made." Downvotes are a way of saying "I don't like this post. It doesn't seem like there was much effort made, or it's offensive, or it makes me uncomfortable." Sometimes upvotes are used to balance out downvotes- someone says "I don't think that post really deserves a -1 rep. I'll go ahead and upvote it." I wouldn't be surprised if some people used downvotes the same way. "I don't think that post deserves 20 rep. It was funny, but it wasn't that funny." Now obviously this doesn't happen often, or everyone would have a lot lower rep. But it does happen. So the rep for an individual post ends up being the kind of "consensus of the forum" on what they think of that post. If a post has 0 rep, odds are the forum was "Meh." If it was 10 rep, it was something witty or really funny. If it is 25 than it was a really well made and timed post. -5 means that it was probably an offensive post and you should really relook over it. The rep system is a lot less about the individual opinions of the post- that's what posting is for- to raise potential problems or holes in a theory, or to say "That's hilarious!", or whatever. I think that threat (and damage) of the anonymous system is a lot lower than the potential hurt feelings of "Hey! Why did you downvote my post?!?" Thankfully, I don't think we have any right now, but I could see a high drama member receiving a downvote, getting offended at the person who did the downvoting, asking that person for a reply, than that person giving a poor response, then drama ensues. That's the big danger of public downvotes. The other side effect is that no one will ever give downvotes, because they don't want to be publicly shamed for it. How often do you see someone post "I dislike this post" on facebook? People don't often want to be seen as dislikers or downvoters. I think that because it's anonymous, we get a lot more honest feedback in the rep of what the forum thinks, and I think if we changed, that feedback would disappear. If I get -5 on a post, I know something's wrong, and I'm going to try and fix it, or if I don't see what I did wrong, I'll PM someone else to help me see it. But I think if it were made public, I wouldn't get 5 people telling the world that they don't like it- or even 5 people PMing me to say I don't like it. I'll just think it was a fine, or meh post. So I think we should stay with the rep system anonymous- it isn't about the individual upvote or downvote- it's about the "consensus" of the forum as a whole. If downvotes became a serious problem, and people really started abusing the system, than I bet the staff would choose to either make it public, or, more likely, just remove the feature, and turn it basically into a "like" system.
  3. Sure, they'll just have these guys print it out.
  4. I'm not sure about that. None of the characters in Warbreaker seemed to have much difficulty with it. Sure, it may be a little heavier than a usual sword, but I don't think he's going to need Stormlight to use it. Maybe a little bit of working out, but I don't think Szeth will need Stormlight to swing it around. Now to take it out of the sheath, that'll definitely require Stormlight, as well as really strong self control to resheath it before it gets too late.
  5. Pain Pain Pain Pain Pain Pain Pain Pain Sorry, I mean Yes, sign me up! I'll come up with a character name in a titch. Edit- So is getting thrown off the train a lynch and a nullifier? Or just a nullifier? And do the cultists get to know who the other cultists are? It'd be silly if they didn't. EDIT- Zane Tevison

    Ask Chaos Anything!

Oh man, I'm a little scared to think of Chaos in a SE game.
  7. Well, to be honest, you probably won't hear the third anywhere else either.
  8. You know what? You made a little mistake- it happens sometimes. But I think if you let him know that you realized that, he'll understand. Shoot him a text saying that you were feeling a little off that day, and give him your apologies. I bet he'll understand and still want to be your friend.
  9. IF you're willing to pay for an upgrade, Or you convince someone else to donate their tuba to your cause. EDIT- I guess Rubix is right. That could lead to total anarchy. "Hey, I'll give you 100 upvotes for your tuba." "Make it 150, and it's a deal."
  10. If I had to reference people to three specific places to get started, I'd reference them to Cosmere 101 (which is a little old, and needs to be updated), the TWG Hero of Ages Q&A (Where the cosmere was "discovered"), and to this wonderful reddit post which lets you find out some of the connections on your own. If you really want what Brandon himself has said so you can try and figure it out for yourself, those last two will be the best options. Good luck!
  11. There's been a lot of very interesting discussion here, and I've really enjoyed reading it. I'm a Mormon, and I quite enjoy my lifestyle. I feel like when I do the things that helps me feel close to God, I feel better and I am a better person. I actually served as a missionary in Peru for two years, trying to help others to do the same (which many of you know). As for the morality and God, the way I personally see it is that there is a Good outside of God, but that God's commands will always end up aligning with that Good- it's a qualification in fact. There are some people that go into deeper mechanics on why that is, but that's another thing entirely. I guess another way of saying it is that "God wills what he wills because it is ethical." Now some people look at some things (especially the Old Testament in the Christian Bible) and say "How are those things ethical?" The truth is, we don't have the whole story. There's so many details and things missing- we don't know exactly what happened. For me, this is how my mind resolves the "God determining what is good." issue. As for hymns, I also love the traditional 4 part "classical" hymns. They're often associated with certain emotions for me- sometimes a memory. Some help me to feel respectful of Him and what he's done, others make me feel enthusiastic about being alive, and others are admittedly boring to me. But I can definitely see how someone who doesn't believe those things would feel uncomfortable singing. Also, TheYoungBard, there is a popular Primary song (Sunday School for kids 4-11) that has those lyrics. Here it is, if you're interested. Once for a family reunion my family changed the words to the song so it talked about our grandpa, and so now the lyrics mesh and mingle with each other so I can't sing either way entirely correct.
  12. Unspecific eh? How about FREE TUBAS FOR EVERYONE! Disclaimer: I do not speak on behalf of 17th Shard with my opinions. Any such random claims are entirely my own.
  13. Let's do the 23rd at 7. Sounds like a good day for a Cosmere meeting. And my sister said that she'd be coming too!
  14. That is the entire reason why I answer little 10 cent surveys on my phone for Google- to gain money for my sweet sweet novellas.
  15. Plus Maxal, that instant, of potentially coming so close to betraying Gavilar out of power/jealousy, than deciding not to is powerful. I can see it- Dalinar goes to the kitchen to get his brother's drink for a meeting they have. He's found a poison that will work that should get past his poison tester. He walks, and in the path, his moment comes- he begins to pour the poison in. But no- he can't. He's his brother. He shouldn't be like this. But he can't handle the power imbalance, how everything always goes to Gavilar- the throne, the loyalties, even Navani. He can't live with the jealousy. So how to get rid of it? The Nightwatcher. Go to the Nightwatcher- whatever her price is, whatever the sacrifice, it has to be better than fratricide. So he goes- and loses his wife. That has the potential to be a very powerful moment- if a really good writer's writing it. Good thing Brandon's at the helm!
  16. Sure, but near the end of the month works better for me- I've got finals coming up. The 23rd, or 30th, or if we want to do a weekend, that works too.
  17. If that phrase is not referring to Dalinar, I'd say that it'd refer to a Herald, not Cultivation. Hoid would consider Cultivation a she- he knew her, and talked with her (maybe even more?). But Vasher only knows Cultivation as a god- not as a woman. I would say that most worldhoppers would be hardpressed to consider Shards by gender. It's possible, certainly, but I don't consider it likely. Sure, they might refer to her as "she", but I bet if you ask the Seventeenth Shard who the most powerful woman is in Roshar, they're likely to say a Herald, not Cultivation. I do like the "jealousy of Gavilar" boon. It seems fitting- like the kind of thing that you wouldn't think of, but once it mentions, it makes sense. The other theory I've heard was Renarin as a boon/curse. So Dalinar goes to the Nightwatcher to ask her to heal Reanarin/make him forget his wife, and the Nightwatcher makes him forget his wife/curses Renarin. But I think that I like the Jealousy of Gavilar boon. It seems best.
  18. A literal ton, eh? I'll make sure to get my scale prepped to double check....
  19. Man. That crazy guy. I like his twitter tag though.
  20. I go for WeiryWriter. Weiry goes through an incredible amount of work to find, transcribe, and input WoB into the Database for all to use. It's a serious time commitment, with not a lot of thanks. Thanks Weiry. You're awesome!
  21. My work here is done.
  22. Works better for me at 7. Thanks Wilson! I also may or may not try to pry SE secrets from you at the time. No, not really.
  23. I'll be there! And if needed I can Caeser it up again.
  24. No, stop derailing a thread about memes with memes. Seriously.
  25. Well then, if you’re going to be thrown in at the beginning of the cycle, I’ll already be in there. (Some unspecified time ago) Diren woke up, feeling…. odd. He blinked a few times, trying to catch his bearings. He didn’t feel sick exactly. He also didn’t feel tired, not really. He was, however, remarkably famished. He would have to get something to eat before entering (once again) into the pitiful library of Kae. He had hoped for so much more from a city so close to the city of Elantris. He had hoped that some would see the need, see the remarkable value of the books in Elantris when it fell. But no. The fear, the chaos, and the new government made sure that anything of or from Elantris turned to garbage. Just like the city itself. Diren still dreamed about them occasionally. He remembered the days, spent chatting with Elantrians, spent talking and helping, and learning. All that was gone now. All of them were gone now. Taken, destroyed during the Reod. If only he could find a way into the city, find some of the books, some of the classics that he had yet to see in any other place, books so old they dated the coming of the people to Elantris itself. It was easy for the Elantrians to have an appreciation of history- so many of them were so long lived, that they were part of a great deal of it. Others, particularly merchants, seemed to be only interested in the now. Diren scoffed at that. The now was determined by the then, set in motion by the motivations and grudges and favors of the path! Understand the past, recognize the patterns and the behaviors, and one could predict the future. Then the now was easy. But how could he find the past? How could he find those books, those tomes that held the secrets of the future? He went to the window, and opened the drapes, then went to the mirror and stopped cold. Could it be? His chance, his opportunity to find the past again? He moved closer, trying to contain his joy. Yes, his skin was blotchy, wrinkly even (though that wasn’t much of a change). He could see the little of the hair that was left was falling off. Indeed. His prayers were finally answered. The Shaod had come upon him. His chance to see History was at hand. Two quick questions- Can Hoed vote for Elantrian Lynches? They can talk, so they could use one of their five words to specify someone to kill, right? Also, do Hoed "win" if the Citizens win? Or are they considered dead?
