  1. Aren't Elantrians fireproof, immortal regenerators with so much energy flowing through them that they need only give it directions and they can literally overwrite reality? I can imagine the heralds being a LOT like Elantrians.
  2. I shouldn't get too far into Cosmere stuff in this forum, but I found this really interesting: [–]danimalod 23 hours ago Brandon, I just read Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and loved it. How did the first shade come to be? Are there shades in other worlds? Do shades have bones? Thanks! [–]mistborn/r/Fantasy Best of 2014 Winner, AMA Author Brandon Sanderson 5 points 11 hours ago Shades are what we call "Cognitive shadows" in the cosmere. They're basically "spren" or "Aons" created from human souls. (Where investiture--or magical power--keeps a consciousness alive after it has lost its Physical connection.) Yes, shades all once had bodies. Think of them like petrified souls, where instead of stone replacing the tissue of a corpse, magical power replaced the parts of a soul that connect that soul to the three realms. [–]danimalod 2 points 10 hours ago Cool, thanks. I also just finished Shadows of Self and was thinking about what would happen if a kandra tried to eat a shade. If they don't have bones, it probably can't happen I guess. But maybe a shade that was a kandra could be pretty frightening. [–]mistborn/r/Fantasy Best of 2014 Winner, AMA Author Brandon Sanderson 5 points 7 hours ago Yes, a Kandra couldn't eat a Shade. And how scary the shade kandra would be depends entirely on the kandra, I'd figure... 2 things I found interesting about this. a) Aons put in the same category as Spren, as opposed to Seons. That the kandra's personality could affect the shade. This feels like a really big hint about how shades work, but I'm too dense to figure it out.
  3. Honestly, I don't think you can rule out miles surviving a nuke... Unless it also vaporizes his metalminds. Suppose an explosion instantly vaporizes him and launches his metal minds flying away at 300 mph (480 kmh). Since he's always tapping absurd amounts of healing, i don't think we can definitively rule out him reforming touching one or several goldminds. Mostly because, it seems like it would be more accurate to say his spirit taps feruchemy than his body. But what do i know?
  4. I may be mistaken in what you're saying, but i think you're missing the crux of what Brandon is saying - with his bracers, TLR's gold heals his 20 year old body. Once he loses his bracers, his gold "heals" his body to match his now thousand year old body.
  5. Look at it from the other direction: people on Earth hope for a recovery. We get bed rest while our body fights off infection, or go to the hospital. We think we can just hang in there. If we COULD detach a chunk of our health, that's the time where conventional wisdom would say "not an option." In fact, giving up your breath at a time like that could be viewed like suicide; being complacent in it or receiving the breath could be like euthenasia.
  6. Worth noting - breaths make you healthier. I would expect this fact to cause a lot of people to die with their breath. Ex: "with the extra health of my breath, I can kick this bout of flesh-eating bacteria and get back to providing for my family." Spoiler alert: it eats his flesh. He dies.
  7. Since reading Shadows of Self has brought Sandersonion thoughts back to mind in my free time, I've been thinking a lot about what it would really be like to be Allomantic bendalloy/Feruchemical zinc or Feruchemical steel. Mostly to use the time bubble to store attributes safely. For Feruchemical steel, it seems like a 1-for-1 offset of time, where you could stand in relatively the same place (within your bubble) for 15 seconds of outside time, but actually store 2 minutes. However, bendalloy is actually dilating time, not yourself. So the outside world wouldn't feel any more normal. You'd just have your own little 2 minute eternity. In the case of Feruchemical zinc, this could be downright trippy. Ok, so all that said, my twinborn power: The Timewaster's Guide: I feel sorry for whatever personality would cause someone to actually LIKE this power combo, but the Timewaster's Guide is dedicated to pulsing through time with his mind slowed down enough to make the outside world seem exciting.
  8. Um... Why are we assuming he is always at X heightening just because he is in that scene? In fact, he would likely only have his breaths handy in that particular scene to detect Syl (like Vasher does). And in a dark dungeon, Hoid knows his aura will go unnoticed. I'm doubting the wisdom in assuming he would always keep them invested in his person.
  9. I won't say that I agree with the theory, but consider: compounding is the process of using one type of magic (allomancy) on the fuel type of another system (feruchemy). Just because feruchemy is the embedded magic system in this one example doesn't mean it always must be so. Thus, if you view a Breath as a chunk of fuel from a magic system that is always firing, what happens if you tap from a metalmind being constantly fed from this embedded magic system? To keep out competing investiture, it would make most sense that the metalmind would actually be empty - not truly a metalmind at all. But as long as it's an object of the type of metal you could tap, and it's your Breath... I can't discuss magic systems within magic systems without throwing in a BWAAAAH for good measure, though.
  10. Thank you, fine chap!
  11. I was thinking that was "Normal, world mist" and "definitely magical Sazed mist". Could be mistaken.
  12. I still vote that his earring is a koloss spike. Just human-granted strength, drained down to such a level that it has no real effects except as a divine communication device. He would know if he were accidentally tapping a new metalmind or burning a new metal. So when Wax talks about feeling stronger in the mists, the only thing that truly makes sense is that the mists (now a representation of Ruin as much as of Preservation) are fueling his spike. SoS Spoiler
  13. Hey folks, I have a quick Emperor's Soul question for Kurkistan any avid memorizers of WoB. Really, I guess this is 2 questions: 1) What happens to an already in-place forgery leaving town? 2) What happens when you try to apply an already-built stamp to an object/person when you're in a different area code? For both questions, I really mean, like, a Scaldrian area code. Pretty sure we debated this a while back and there was some WoB that says "nay" to either working.
  14. You mean, like, worshipping a pantheon of gods who will die in one week unless you let them feed on your soul? Sanderson has shown in other books how a people could come to worship a people who live, at most, 10-15 years. You don't worship the individual so much as the manifestation. Warbreaker spoilers/cosmere at large:
  15. You should be able to store Breath in a rock I was intending to store Breath into a metalmind, store an attribute, and then withdraw the Breath to Return myself. But the same concept should apply here: Store Breath in gem. Leave it out in a highstorm; retrieve Breath. Now you never completely consume a Breath because it's getting reinvigorated. I AM aware there is a known effect where Investiture fights and blocks other Investitures. This doesn't seem consistent, but there's a very good chance it will render my above point moot. And thus completely destroy my Breath-Compounding megalomaniacal plans.
  16. I don't think there's much to see here. This is an intentionally soft magic system because it's necessary for the tropes of the State. It can make you fly, make force fields, power cars, translate languages. This is D&D magic through and through. The only thing important is that it has a power source. If anything, hacking is the real Sandersystem of the book.
  17. I thought it was intentional that we see Melhi was female all along. All "he" references are from people who have never seen Mehli, or are Mehli's robot playing along. I'm guessing she's very much like Sophie.
  18. Why can't Lurchers yank metal out of people's stomach? We know this is truth. We've discussed to death the concept of needing to overcome a human being's innate Investiture. I don't know the truth about Elantrians. You make an astute point: why would an Elantrian even be capable of teleporting itself if it's already under the effect of Investiture? I could propose some conjecture about Investiture waveforms and the concept of 2 radio stations broadcasting on the same frequency or something. But I'm instead going to keep with a simple point: we have discussed (with much less hostility) the concept of Investiture inherently getting in the way of other Investitures. We clearly do not have the full story, but it should be mentioned in any debate about Investiture mysteriously not working on a creature afflicted with another form of Investiture. You have made a sweeping generalization of my conjecture (note this word) and, when it didn't fit every scenario, you threw the baby out with the bathwater and screamed "preposterous!" I started my post out by acknowledging I was out of my depth. I'm not going to be offended, and I'll treat you with the utmost respect if I encounter you in another thread. But understand: we aren't arguing economics. The outcome of this thread will not change the course of history. More importantly, I have a full-time job. I'm here on my meager breaks, trying to contribute. Fact is, Outis' threads almost always pique my interest, and he has already accepted that I will randomly barge in with a half-cocked notion and not back it up* because I don't have those 3 hours of investigation I wish I had. My apologies if this isn't sufficient. I won't mind if you just skip my posts. *Tell me if there have been any improvements to searching for WoBs and annotations in the past few months. I'd love to improve my game.
  19. Dear Lord. I always feel so out of my depth on this forum unless I have 3 hours to investigate before speaking up. Even so... Investiture blocks Investiture. See Nightblood vs Steelpush, Lashing Plate, etc. Has this simple fact been pointed out yet? If so, carry on. If not, the Dor is basically a dead god or 2's worth of Investiture, right? How much is being poured into those bodies unformed? Probably not a terrible amount, in the shardic scope. But enough to block some local-level prestidigitation? Seems likely. And if so, I'd put my money on it blocking some Rioting too.
  20. Re: Shardic "Horcrux:" I think a survival mechanism like this has barely ever been explored in the scope of a not-antagonist. Putting it on the "wildcard" character could open some interesting plots where the good and bad have too much at risk, so whoever could influence this 3rd party (overcome a policy of non-intervention as it were) would be the victor. Also, I keep playing the Devil's Advocate for why The Ones Above could be Scadrians so, for the record, I'd like to finally state my own opinion: I hope it's another planet.
  21. I asked about this. I believe Chaos said it was feasible but would require him having time to poke around under the hood.
  22. I take that as evidence of detecting an entity which describes itself as a tunnel...
  23. If you impart senses (I'm being cautious), this would make sense. Vasher mentions ropes (I think) throwing boulders at one point. Would any awakened rope be capable of throwing boulders? Or is it because it was awakened with the mental image of a rope throwing boulders, so the rope was forced to assume that level of physical strength in order to perform its duty? Afterall, we see a lot of people being grabbed and tangled in awakened fabrics, but no limb-breaking and people-mangling. Doesn't that seem strange? Feruchemy thought exercise: Take a Windwhisperer, have them store up lots of sight. Now blind him. What happens when he taps his Sightmind? What if his eyes were physically gouged out? If he can still say, I'd say that's pretty compelling evidence of using Investiture to emulate a Physical structure. If this poor, tortured Feruchemist could not see, this would be a point in favor (but not proof) of Awakened objects using Investiture to bypass the need for Physical input.
