  1. I know everyone seems to support the Scadrians as the Ones Above, but what society is actively working on technological devices that run off Investiture? That's right, Roshar is. Brandon has suggested that fabrials represent a "magic system". We also know that Roshar's theology has an intense interest in worlds beyond their own planet, giving them incentive to explore the universe. I wonder if it is possible that the machines are powered by fabrials rather than using bronze from Scadrial.
  2. Here's my thoughts on the subject. This is all based on the idea that Investiture is a wavelength based phenomenon. The sacrifice of 50 men allowed Dilaf to modify his bone structure in a way that modulates the wavelength of the Dor in such a way as to nullify Aons. The sacrifice of one man acts as the modulator to allow teleportation. Theoretically it might be possible to sacrifice enough men to create a bone structure to act as a modulator for teleportation, but it is not clear how many this would take. This also could explain the effect of the Shaod. The chosen Elantran would have his Spirit Web modified. However, since the modulator is wrong (missing the chasm line), the change is incorrect. This is very similar to burning an impure metal on Scadrial.
  3. Fair enough then.
  4. Interesting theory, but it has a few holes. For one, Syl talks about the evil spren she sees in the highstorms, which suggests that voidish forms come from different spren. It might stand to reason that there are similarities in the powers, given that they are from the same planet, in fact the void binding diagram has the same surges with half-rotated glyphs. Also, there's the quote from the Nightform about "It should be possible to blend their surges to ours in the end." If this were possible, then it would be virtually impossible if the same spren, when bonded, changed the form.
  5. The OP has the voidbinding glyphs (per the Coppermind).
  6. I would propose a different model, what I think of as the wavelength modulation model. In this model, each for of Investiture has a set wavelength similar to a color of light. In order to use this Investiture, it must be passed through both the Spirit Web of an individual and some for of modulator that allows the wavelength to be "tuned" to accomplish ones goal. On Scadrial, metals are the modulator. Nalthis uses color, Tala in the sand algae, and Roshan uses the spree (except for Honorblades, which themselves are the modulator). On Select the Investiture is modulated by shape, either through forging, drawing Aons, growing bone, or the dance of ChayShan (I hope I spelled that right). This model holds as well for minor shardworlds, where on First of the Sun the modulator is the birds (parasites?). Opinions or arguments?
  7. I agree with your idea about a different breed. We know that Investiture has some wavelike properties. I suspect that the Day side fungus has organelles similar to chloroplasts that modify the Investiture of a specific wavelength so that it can be used. If that wavelength were absorbed by the moon soil, it would never reflect to the darkside. Therefore, organisms on the darkside would evolve to access a different wavelength.
  8. This is assuming that telomerase is inactive when gold compounding is activated. Given the rate of cellular regeneration under gold compounding, it is more likely that telomerase is at least temporarily activated. Active telomeraxe is one of the required elements of immortalized cells. These cells are likely immortalized and their divisions controlled by the Cognitive aspect of Investiture. This Cognitive aspect is also likely for the aging of a gold compounder's appearance.
  9. Possible Kanda world hopper alert?
  10. Nightform Parshendi for tactical foresight Keiser for planning and coordination Dalinar for command TenSoon for scouting Generic Gold Twin born as tanks Shall an for misdirection Hoid because duh Sixth of the Dusk for infiltration Generic Southern Scadrian for demolitions Spook (savant version) for scouting and alerts
  11. I picture the cognitive realm as a membrane overlapping the physical realm not on a planetary level but a universe level. Individual planets can have geometry projected onto this realm, while the gaps are removed by the "folding" of the membrane. This would also explain perpendicularities as spots where investiture has created a "wormhole" between the cognitive and physical realms.
  12. One other point: What about the Parshendi? We are assuming this war is Alethi v. Scadrial. If we add in the Stormform Parshendi, there is a great deal more power available for Roshar. While they would not likely side with the humans, they create a third party that could greatly confuse a war. Their powers and numbers are more than a match for the Scadrians.
  13. I think everyone is ignoring one important thing: Scardial wins IF the fight is only in the Physical Realm. But if the fight is also in the Cognitive Realm, Roshar has a HUGE advantage in that they can enter the realm physically. This will allow them to do many things like soulcasting an ammo storage facility into a fiery apocalypse, or converting guns into blood. A Lightweaver or Elsecaller, well packed with Stormlight, could cripple a Scadrian army the second they invade Roshar. Atium mistings can predict the moves of their opponent, but can they see the actions of an enemy they dont even know exists? Also, can they avoid being lashed to the wall by a windrunner? How can a coinshot kill a windrunner when a Lightweaver changes the coin to smoke?
  14. I think that this is a reflection of the gemstones as the storehouse of investiture in Roshar. The Cognitive investiture of a soul is represented as a "stone", which is a glass bead. These beads are ready to receive investiture in the form of Stormlight in order to change during Soulcasting, so a bead makes perfect sense. It's nothing more than the projection of the system from the Physical realm into the Cognitive.
  15. I suspect this has to do with more than Roshar. I suspect that the two blind men are Hoid and Frost, and the end of an era represents the shattering of Adonalsium. They are both blind to the path that should be taken going forwards, and were contemplating the beauty of Adonalsium and his plans or lack thereof. I think the cliff in this case may actually be metaphorical, where a choice they made led to the shattering. As the Second Letter says of Rayse, "He is what we made him to be (emphasis mine)", This implies that Frost and Hoid played an active role in the shattering, certainly a "cliff" in the history of the Cosmere.
  16. No, she's the chasm fiend Kaladin killed. He still holds her heart, though...literally...Kaladin handed it to Dalinar!
  17. I suspect that you are right, Hoid is tailing her, and using lightweaving to appear as a mink. Also kinks are at least partly a water mammal, which would be more likely than a land mammal since water would offer some protection from highstorms.
  18. This is likely a consequence of thermodynamics. The energy being supplied to return the spren is provided by the wielder in the former of heat.
  19. We know that without the bond, spree cannot affect the physical realm very much, if at all. Also, Syl tells Kala din that if he dies, she goes "stupid". This suggests that sentient spree gain this sentience from the bond, and the bondholder's Physical realm manifestation.
  20. I think the fundamental difference between atium and Nightblood is that Nightblood received its investiture simultaneously with its sentience. In fact, based what we know about the creation of Scadrial, humans received their innate investiture at the same time as their sentience as well. Atium does not receive sentience when it is created. In fact, is it possible that the requirement for sentience is an infusion of Investiture that touches all 3 realms? This could explain how atium is not sentient, since it bypasses cognitive. This would also explain why gems on Roshar are not sentient.
  21. It goes up and down and you end up where you started. Reading is like a bird.
  22. It kinda stinks if you look at it too closely! Life is like a pair of cargo pants.
  23. Harmony would be its own opposite. Since 2 polar opposites are joined to make Harmony, there would be no other combination that would be its exact opposite.
  24. I dont think this would be possible. Basically, Soulcasting is convincing an item to change its material nature. Assuming the Law of Conservation of Matter applies in the Cosmere, converting an object from itself (matter) to Investiture (energy) would require a nuclear reaction of sufficient force to obliterate not only the Soulcaster, but a good chunk of the surrounding countryside. Also, as far as we know, Soulcasting is strictly matter-to-matter transformation If this was possible, though, it does create an interesting idea where you could Soulcast someone else's metalmind and deny them whatever was stored in there. What would happen if you were to do this to a nicrosilmind?
  25. I'm seeing the "night" brought by the Everstorm as being more the "night" of a total social collapse and destruction than simple darkness. Also, if we examine the symbolism, the Knights Radiant show "light" tendencies, such as light eyes, a tendency to glow, etc. The Heralds take this to even more heights. Given that these are based off of Honor, it could be said that Honor is the shard of Light. The Parshendi are red and black, and their gods (the Unmade?) can be seen to be aligned with darkness (the Black Fisher, the Midnight Mother, etc.). Given that these are presumably spren of Odium, it could be seen that Odium is the shard of Darkness. Given that the Everstorm will usher in the transformation of the Parshendi to at least 1 of the forms of their gods, this would presumably strengthen Odium's side and increase darkness (a metaphorical "night").
