  1. I hope no one very close to Kaladin dies in book 4. Guy deserves a good book for once.
  2. As my Cosmere (re)read is kinda stuck (I'm just not in the mood, I want SA4!) I started rereading the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik three weeks ago and am likely to finish book 7 tonight. After that, it's likely either a reread of ther standalone novel Uprooted or I'll skip that and go straight to Spinning Silver which I haven't read yet.
  3. I don't think so. If he dies then not in SA4. If a major character should die in the next book, I'd find Adolin more likely of the two brothers. Some member of B4 could be likely, especially if some more of them should Knight up.
  4. The last books I bought are the first three volumes of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series in one ebook. I felt like rereading the series again, this time in English.
  5. Oh boy I can't really put all together, I'd have to quote half the books. There's one though that stayed with me ever since I first read WoK:
  6. Yup. Don't remember the exact wording but all this petty revenge thing didn't make him feel better at all.
  7. Well, this does not count as an excuse just as Nergaoul's influence over Dalinar doesn't count as an excuse for Rathalas.
  8. I absolutely agree with you here. I somehow took all my negative emotions from OB out on Moash (after all, he caused the worst of them). If you make Kaladin sad, I WILL be angry at you! I spend a lot of time in the SA fandom on Tumblr and yes, it's kinda funny of someone writes a lengthy post about how great everyone in SA is and hoe they love the character development and how layered everyone is and then end it with "except for Moash. Storm Moash". Should Moash decide to allow some sense return to his mind and reflect on the bullcrem he's done I am willing to follow him on his way to redemption and back to B4, but for now, I'll gladly hate him.
  9. Beat me to it! I wonder if we get a 100% christmas present. Would be something!
  10. We aren't. Not in the least.
  11. I'm with Ixthos and most others here. I'm very non-religious but one thing many religions (at least certain interpretations of them) have in common that always spoke to me is forgiveness: that no matter how horrible the crime you commit is, you can and will be forgiven, IF you see your wrongdoing as such, if you feel it, if you feel remorse and ask for forgiveness - be it from whatever deity you believe in or from people you wronged. Also many religious and philosphical approaches tend to say that if you hurt others, you hurt yourself as well. Your mind, your soul etc. I'm just thinking of Harry Potter right now: Harry at one point asks Dumbledore (or Hermine? I'm not sure) if a person who split their soul to make horcruxes out of the parts could bring those parts back together and mend their soul. The answer is: Yes you can, but it's an immensely painful process where you have to truly feel what you've done. In this, The Rift is Dalinar's ultimate horcrux. What he did there completely shattered his soul, and as he's trying to mend it, he suffers. A lot. I don't know, but I feel that if the whole concept of "doing wrong --> regret --> change --> doing right" seems so far off the scale to someone, then maybe SA aren't the right books? Because I'm pretty sure this theme's going to come up again in later books. Other example: Kaladin and Amaram in WoR. I guess most of us agree on Amaram being a hideous person with his head so far up his *** that he was never able to even question his own actions. Kaladin hates him. He HATES him and wants him dead, he plans on killing him, knowing that no one would ever find out if he would. That's revenge he wants, and we all know what good it did him: it ate at his soul for weeks on end, until he all but betrayed his Oaths over his hatred for Amaram and lighteyes in general. So if he had killed Amaram, what good would it have done him? We see the answer in Moash: none. Killing out of pure revenge never feels like one thought it would. That's why Kaladin's fight against Amaram during the OB climax is on a completely diffierent level: Kaladin doesn't fight Amaram because he wants to kill but out of necessity. Amaram needed to be killed because he wasn't going to stop. It didn't even truly feel like Kaladin still hated the guy anymore Dalinar doesn't need to be killed: he is no longer at risk to go off and burn down a city. The Blackthorn would have gone and destroy Kharbranth after learning about Taravangian's scheming. He doesn't. So whatever "irredeemable" means - maybe he is, but it doesn't change the fact that any kind of punishment would simply amount to nothing. One of my favorite book quotes comes from Warm Bodies, a zombie love story (!!!). The protagonists are a male zombie and a human girl. The zombie kills her boyfriend and eats his brain and over the course of the book gets to know her and begins to turn back into a human again. They fall in love with each other and of course she eventually finds out that he was the one who ate her boyfriend. It's been like seven or eight years so I don't really remember much but eventually this dialogue happens: "I'm sorry." "I forgive you." "Thank you." And that's it. No more accusations, no ill feelings. Just peace of mind, for both of them.
  12. Yup. I doubt Kaladin would have been able to fly a group of refugees through half of Roshar at 2nd Oath.
  13. Very nice news:
  14. Absolutely not. A relationship can be anything, not just romantic or sexual. I believe this tweet fits quite well in here: Go for it, fanfic writers! (Oh rust I'm a fanfic writer)
  15. I'm not a big fan of many of those either and I honestly have a huge problem whenever every deep bond two beings have said bond is sexualized because people cannot fathom that not everyone's ultimate goal is a romantic or sexual relationship. Some relationships are deep and meaningful without any hint of romance or sexuality and the human-spren bond certainly counts as such imo.
  16. No human/spren pairings pls.
  17. I'd say this is due to the placing in the story - we have Drehy say the words and then cut to another scene. We all know by this point what these words mean, so why drag the scene out iwhen everyone knows what's happening?
  18. My guess is that if Drehy hasn't sworn it before and simply didn't have enough Stormlight to get anywhere, the moment he said the words to Kaladin when he came to get them definitely counts.
  19. Personally I'd prefer for not much of a lovelife at all ... not everyone needs romance in their lives and I'm not a fan of lovestories to begin with, so as far as I'm concerned Kaladin should remain single.
  20. Another weaknesses is medicine: most medical staff talks in terms of rotspren and seems to have never heard of germs and bacteria.
  21. According to this tweet he has "100 000+" words left to write:
  22. Odium isn't helping them. He's using them. He doesn't give two chips about them and as soon as he doesn't need them anymore he'll get rid of them without a second thought.
  23. That is a question I asked myself when I finished OB. And what actually is the question? "Is Dalinar redeemable?" Let's break this down: - is Dalinar redeemable in the eyes of the reader, the people of Alethkar, his sons/family, the victims, Rosharan moral standards? For some of them the answer is no, for some it might be yes - what is redemption? - what are the consequences if everyone can 100% unanimously decide he is completely irredeemable? - how many people are too much? Where exactly do you draw the line between "killed someone in a drunken barfight" and "mass murder"? A hundred people? A thousand? Ten? Is it a matter of coldheartedness? I grew up knowing German jurisdiction: if you kill someone in a moment of blind anger without actually intending to your punishment will be much easier than if you plan a murder beforehand. If you are mentally ill and don't know what you're doing, you won't get punished at all because you're "schuldunfähig" ("incapable of being guilty"). You'll still be locked up, but mental hospitals are something very different than a prison. Also, I once read that no fictional character ever "deserves" a redemption arc. They either have one, or they don't. Dalinar is well on his way in this reard. His redemption arc started years ago, when he decided he wanted to be a better person. That's the first step! To realize what you've done, to feel regret, to try and do better. Whether or not he es redeemable within the world he lives in is yet to be decided: Right now, most of the world doesn't even know what exactly it is that he did. They will elarn of that as soon as his book comes out. And what is the alternative to redemption? Killing Dalinar? Locking him up in a dark cellar for the rest of his days? Sure you could do that. Would that make the world a better place? The people of Rathalas would still be dead. Evi would still be dead. Dalinar would not feel differently than he already does: he feels pretty horrible about the Rift. He's not trying to apologize for it. He just does his best and honestly? The world needs him. Locking him up because he is "irredeemable" would take away one of the most important players in the fight against Odium. Also, what is punishment? What's it for? Revenge? Retribution? "Punishing" Dalinar will accomplish nothing! The big difference between Dalinar and Sadeas, Amaram and Moash is that the latter didn't want redemption. Sadeas and Amaram felt exactly right in what they did. Would they have tried to become better people had they stayed alive? We will never know. Moash might have a chance. I know most of the fandom (including myself) wish him a painful death but if he honestly were to sit down, reflect on his actions, realize he stormed up and tried to become a better person than I'd give him a chance. And no, I do not believe what's happening in this fictional world can be transferred to the real world. I am not talking about redeeming Hitler. Or the invaders who killed Natives of America. Or Trump.
