Mid-Range Game 23: A Desperate Alliance
Orlok Tsubodai replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Sounds like a sensible lynch, then. Elenion. @Straw, @BrightnessRadiant, @StrikerEZ, @Megasif, @_Stick_, @Sami, @A Joe in the Bush, @The Flash, @Yitzi2, @Sart, @Hemalurgic_Headshot, @Crimsn-Wolf, @Elbereth, none of our win conditions are compatible with Elenion surviving. -
Mid-Range Game 23: A Desperate Alliance
Orlok Tsubodai replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Which is something useful to us as Alethi, Elenion. The Ghostbloods will target us, inevitably, and we need to remove lives from Parshendi if we don't want to be eliminated without a chance. There are 8 Parshendi, and 15 Alethi - you already have more lives than we do. If we lost the lynch, it goes from 15-16 to 15-14, rather than 14-15 as it otherwise would. We're unlikely to hit a Ghostblood on the first round, and have a greater likelihood of hitting a Voidbringer than a Son of Honor lynching without information. -

My apologies - I seem to have missed that. I'll reevaluate, and get back to you. -

Yitzi, my understanding is that we hit Drake to guarantee he goes into Scholarform - the certainty of correct information from the collaboration is the important part, in my mind. -
Mid-Range Game 23: A Desperate Alliance
Orlok Tsubodai replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm well aware, Asterion. I've been busy with Elbereth today, but am definitely following the game. Drake. I think Sart's plan is very sensible. If we don't use the lynch as Alethi, we lose. We're significantly disadvantaged by the ease of communication available to the Parshendi, and the double lives balance our numbers. I am surprised that the Parshendi wish to turn down such a method of cooperation, though. -

Equally, Elenion, it also removes our tool for dealing with secret factions and/or Parshendi. Indeed, I'd think it's somewhat likely that you're a member of a secret faction yourself, if you're arguing that the lynch not be used in a targeted fashion. -

I'll sign up as Locke. What triggers the end of the game, to allow either the Alethi or Parshendi to win? -
Brightness, at some point there is going to be an attempted mislynch on Joe, to allow Wilson (the parole officer) to achieve her win condition. My suggestion was that of all the lynches we (those who would quite like to see Wilson achieve her win condition) could disrupt, this wasn't a bad one. Better that we did this last cycle than causing a mislynch towards the end of the game, or disrupting a lynch that would be critical information wise.

We're not lynching a neutral to find out another neutral's role. We're lynching a neutral so we don't have to organise a mislynch towards the end of the game, when it's important the village lynch the right people.

We've had essentially zero discussion about why we're lynching Straw, which makes it difficult to draw much information from this cycle. What distinguishes your vote from The Flash's vote, for instance? (Apologies if either of you actually have justified your vote).

@The Flash, @cloudjumper, @Shqueeves, @asterion137, @Paranoid King, @StrikerEZ, @Elenion, @BrightnessRadiant, @Arinian, @Araris Valerian, @randuir. @Ecthelion III, @Seonid, @Drake Marshall, @Crimsn-Wolf, @_Stick_, @Dalinar Kholin, @Arraenae, @Elbereth I think that's everyone I haven't previously summoned. A Joe lynch shouldn't be controversial, avoids causing Stink upset (I know why, and it's understandable) which is apparent from his post, and is at the cost of what appears to be a pretty unproductive lynch on Straw.

Right. I very much don't like the wagon on Stink, and don't think the wagon on Straw will be terribly useful. Joe. Joe is Valjean, and at some point there will be an attempted lynch on him for Wilson, so we may as well do it now when the current lynches aren't brilliant. @A Joe in the Bush, @little wilson, @Amanuensis, @Straw, @STINK

Looking back through, I think this post ought to be addressed. Whilst I don't think there is underlying resentment in your initial point, and so won't address that, your other points do warrant discussing. So, I'm not sure preventing a kill is actually "sabotaging the village" to the extent that he deserves lynching. I've already addressed that he may have seen it as a way to fulfil his win condition, and indeed stealing tin might arguably be yet more detrimental to the village. Regardless, it appears to be a moot point now, with the lynch moving onto Straw. You express distaste for lynching Stink because of his play style, and argue that it's something the board moderators should resolve. His play style, whilst obnoxious this game, hasn't broken any rules as far as I can tell, which means we're discussing what we want the meta of our community to look like. I'm of the view that the meta should be formed by the players, not the moderators. We, collectively, create our environment. We make it the special place on the internet it is; our wonderful corner of gentleman killers. It's like this because of how we interact with each other, not because Wilson, Meta, Gamma and Alv have told us to play in this way. It's for us as a community to decide if a style of play should be punished, if it's not hurtful or rude. If we, collectively, decide that Stink's blackmail is something we wish to discourage as a community, then we absolutely should lynch him for it, and we should make very clear that that's the reason we are lynching him. I disagree wholeheartedly on your suggestion that blackmail isn't something to get angry about. I, and many other players, consider the most important part of SE to be having fun, and ensuring as many players as possible have fun, rather than necessarily winning. Blackmail reduces or destroys the autonomy of the targeted player or players, and in so doing, reduces their enjoyment of the game, in order to further someone's chances of victory. I'm of the view that we, as a community, should make a collective decision to discourage or ignore blackmail in games. I'll happily work with the eliminators if it serves my interest, just as I'll work with the village, but I will refuse to cooperate with either side if they seek to blackmail me.

I'm going to play the devil's advocate for a moment, and will suggest that there exists a possibility that Stink didn't do this to spite the village. Stink stole from me on Night One, which made tactical sense. As the Pauper Noble, I was guaranteed to have a metal. I suspect that Stink stole from the Ringleader last night based on a similar reasoning - rather than blindly fishing for metal, he chose to take guaranteed metal, in order to fulfil his win condition. Now, whilst this does favour one side over another, I don't think it was necessarily done in order to favour a side. He was playing to his win condition, and I'm not sure that alone merits a lynch, particularly when he can't steal from the Ringleader again. Now, I would like to make very clear that I most certainly do not condone his actions threatening Aman for information. I've always taken the view that directing other players, or acting otherwise as a dictator, reduces the enjoyment players get from the game, and that maximising enjoyment for players should be our aspiration, rather than playing optimally to win. I think we can all agree to censure Stink for threatening players, but it's worth considering whether the act of threatening players, if we consider the stealing to be playing to his win condition, justifies spending a lynch on him. It might well do, but we should discuss it on that issue, and not necessarily on the grounds of stealing a vial.

Currently with El in California. I've just arrived, it's 4am UK time, and I'm borrowing El's phone to make this post, so don't expect me to be on again this turn.

Looks like my vote has served its purpose, and there's no need for a Rand lynch right now if it's not keeping Aman alive. Randuir.

Currently travelling to an airport to fly to the US, to see El. I'll be over the Atlantic for much of this cycle. Further thoughts to come, but to put paid to the suggestion that people are voting on a Aman merely because he has momentum, despite being a far more tenuous lynch than Randuir, Randuir. @asterion137, feel free to change your vote back to Randuir, if Aman's lynch having more momentum was really your reason. You'd make it three on Rand to two on Aman, so you wouldn't reduce the likelihood of a lynch on one of the two of them, if you really don't mind which.

As is obvious, I was attacked last night. You'll all recall that I asked for a PM from an eliminator, which I received, and have come to a reasonable and very limited agreement with them in return for an attack this cycle.

Emphasis mine. Randuir, as neutral players, I'm sure you recognise that we are not villagers. We shouldn't just be helping the village - we should be walking the middle line, and aiding both sides. Joe tried to contact the eliminators in order to work with them. 1) I'm not sure this is "going all-in on the elim side", or "aiding the skins far more than... aiding the village" 2) Recognising that we have to walk the middle line, do you really think it's unreasonable to try to make contact with the eliminators? How to you propose we work with both sides, and pursue our win conditions, if we do not have contact with the eliminators? Again, we're not villagers. I've said to a number of people, and I'll say it again here, that I would like to make contact with the eliminator team. I certainly don't intend to become an eliminator in all but name, Randuir, but it would be exceptionally useful to get constant PMs organised with Eponine, for example. On the second point I've bolded, you made the following argument yesterday: Emphasis mine. Randuir, the above argument is general, and applies to myself, Cosette, Eponine, a lesser extent to the thief. The pretext upon which you tried to lynch Joe could be used to lynch any of the rest of us, and the precedent you seemed to be setting that you wished to lynch us on this bases was alienating. I would also point out that this post can be read simultaneously as a pitch to the neutral players by an eliminator, highlighting the benefits of an arrangement, whilst simultaneously creating village antipathy towards neutral players generally.

@A Joe in the Bush, the two minute version of why we should vote on Jondesu? Not to mention that if we do that, we lose any chance of getting information from the lynch.
