In the papers I'm Catholic, but actually I'm an atheist. Although I usually don't really want to talk about religion and tell people that I'm agnostic. Somehow the religious people I meet are more likely to accept and argue with agnostics than atheists. In my whole family only my grandparents go to church every sunday, the rest of us doesn't care.

It's 10AM here where I am now, and it's the beginning of the most quiet time on the Shard I think... Americans are asleep, Autralians are probably spending their evening hanging out with friends and kangaroos and there aren't that many Europeans here... So for the next couple of hours I'm gonna feel like this famous gif

New editions artwork on Amazon Look Inside
Mestiv replied to PeterAhlstrom's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
As I'm not familiar with Amazon, can someone please explain what is this Look Inside thing? How to use it? -
Whoa, Edgedancer, your post broke the page!

I read Alcatraz after I've read WoK, WoR and Mistborn. While reading Alcatraz I kept seeing analogies and references between this world and Cosmere or other books written by Brandon, or even other authors. Why don't we try to find all the references from all the books? I can remember only a few from the top of my head, but I bet there are more. 1) "Wasing not of wasing is" - Quentins Talent kicked in, making him say it. That's obviously reference to Mistborn trilogy. 2) Knights of Crystalia - to he, they have striking similarities to Knights Radiant. Or rather their crystal swords are very similar to Shardblades and their glass armors are somewhat similar to Shardplates. 3) The ending of first book, when Alcatraz expects his grandfather will leave him in his old house for couple of weeks. Grandpa calls it nonsense minutes later. - That's a reference to Harry Potter, Brandon admits it in the Annotations. 4) Curators in the Library of Alexandria --- Shadows from Threnody. 5) Transportation Glass from book 3 --- Oathgates. They work very similarly, exchanging the contents of two rooms. 6) Somewhere in Alcatraz books there is a mention of Rhysadium. And that's all I can think of now. What similarities to other worlds have you seen in Alcatraz series?

I hit it today. Didn't expect it tbh.

Only if the post is in no way confrontational. If I saw a post with negative rep and I wasn't 100% certains that there is nothing offensive, I wouldn't up it.

Technical question time! How is quota algorithm written? a) If (amount of upvotes given in last 24h > something) then ( quota_hits(); ) If (amount of upvotes given in current date > something) then ( quota_hits(); ) In other words: does the quota reset every midnight or it's more fluent? and if it resets every midnight, then which midnight is it (I mean what's the current server time)?

Feezerburn: Does this fire spread in any way? Does he have to touch something to "light it"? Red Light: I like this one If he touch me, would he stop my heart? Will continous touch cause my whole body (including heart) to freeze motionless? If he "hit" the ocean would he stop the currents? Does he have to *hit* or a touch is enough?

There will be more dragon slaying... with more dragon slaying -
Well, the scale doesn't have to be that small to reach interesting effects. Let's see. I haven't read the Dalles thread so I don't know if she needs to touch an object to take its' momentum, but that doesn't matter. She takes momentum from a driving car. The car weights 1500kg and is going 50km/h. Now, she gives this momentum to a small metal ball that weights 100g (that's not that small). The car's momentum was: 75 000 kg*km/h. That gives this metal ball the velocity of 750 000 km/h. That's around 208 km/s... Hmm... That's fast. The ball would probably evaporate almost instantly and generate a powerful shockwave. Make the ball 100kg and the speed is now 208m/s, that's more or less the speed of a bullet when leaving the gun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muzzle_velocity). Cool, 100kg bullet, that's like what big cannons shoot As we can see here meteorites enter Earth atmosphere with speed ranging from from 11 km/sec (25,000 mph), to 72 km/sec (160,000 mph!).

The should be fictional characters AMA subforum in the creation corner... -
I think posts should be put in the red zone if they are breaking forum etiquette, but are not rude/aggresive/offensive enough to be reported. I can accept eventually the downvotes used on popular posts that try to balance them, but making posts red should be limited to the cases I've mentioned.

1) I kind of agree that the rep system is overinflated. However it's unavoidable that users will have more REP points tham Brandon, since Brandon doesn't post here any more. If he did, I'm 100% certain that KK wouldn't stand a chance. 2) You are not the first one to point at a "certain group that places too much value on their upvotes", however I've never really seen anyone seriously display this kind of behaviour. In the Community section we often jokingly refer to the accumulated rep-points, however I've never seen anyone being upset because his/her's meme didn't get enough upvotes or something like that. Also, as far as I remember, no one in this thread actually opposed to the idea of resetting the rep system, which would mean losing all those points that you think some of us value so much. 3) Downvotes are used on this site the way they are used because of how this community treats them. I think there's nothing wrong with it. After all, I think that it's the users who decide what a downvote means, not some kind of a forced definition. It is not true that no one ever downvotes here. As stated by several users in this topic, some people downvote posts that they consider unworthy of a high amount of upvotes and I think nobody sees a problem with that. Sure, if I noticed that my post had X reputation, and after a while it has X-1 rep I would wonder why is that, but it wouldn't be a big deal. I've seen some users complain about ninja-downvoters, but I think after reading this topic everything is clear now. We are nice people here on this site and those that are concerned about the downvotes usually worry that they might have offended someone or that they wrote something wrong, so they sometimes ask for this anonymous downvoter to explain what's wrong with their post. Their worry is mistakenly viewed as attachment to the rep points, while it's usually just care for the positive nature of this board. Seriously, why would Kobold, Twi or anyone from the Top 10 worry about this -1 or even -10 points when they have so many? They are major contributors to this community and they are obviously responsible for the atmosphere or this place almost as much as admins and mods. 4) Yes, there are big differences between sections of this forum in regard to reputation points. Personally, I didn't consider this a problem, but I hope we'll all come to an agreement how to fix this

I haven't, although I'm giving out less upvotes than before, so I won't end up at the end of the day without any green arrows left in case I need them

How many Sharders take part in the Power Ball lottery in USA? I've seen on my Polish news that you can win over 1 billion dollars -
Yes, your insight is very useful to help us appreciate staff's work However, I was mainly interested in problems that are specificaly caused by the rep system. I figured that admins and mods are putting a lot of work to make this forum as great as it is, but how is current reputation system making it harder?

No, I haven't. Just like most of us I guess. That's why I'd appreciate if you show us how it looks from your side
