Surgebinding While Using Shardplate
Sand Master replied to Sand Master's topic in Stormlight Archive
Sure each action has an equal and opposite reaction. But the amount of force needed to change an arrow's flight path in the air is not much. Meaning that the reactionary force on Kaladin wouldn't be that strong either. As for the steelpushing argument, I think there may be a misunderstanding going on. Both the ground and the air push back on the coin with the same amount of force that the coin pushes on them, not with the amount of force that the steelpush puts on the coin. The coin doesn't need a lot of force to push on the air and move it. The ground, on the other hand, can take (and therefore provide) much more force. It's the same as if you were trying to physically push something through the air, as opposed to straight down. Moving your hand through the air doesn't push you back, does it? You have friction with the ground, and even if you didn't, your inertia would keep you from moving very much anyway. But if you push against the ground, you go up. That's how push-ups are possible. Steelpushing is basically just a really long arm that pushes on things.- 52 replies

Surgebinding While Using Shardplate

I don't see why you think that, when performing a Reverse Lashing, Kaladin should have been pulled into the air towards the arrows' collective center of mass. He's not giving the arrows a gravitational pull. He's giving one to the shield. Simply because the shield has an effect on the arrows, that doesn't mean it goes both ways. If you want to get extremely technical, every object with any amount of mass has some level of gravitational field, but because we're so relatively small it has basically no effect when compared to the strength of the planet's gravitational pull. The planet's gravity is also a large influence on a Reverse Lashing, according to the Ars Arcanum. The full entry of a Reverse Lashing in the Ars Arcanum is as follows: This pretty much sums it up to me. The title even says: "giving an object a gravitational pull". Nothing about Adhesion there, and I can't see any reason why Adhesion would be needed to make this viable.- 52 replies

You're sort of asking two different questions here. Can a KR bond 2 spren? I think it's been determined that it's possible? I don't recall exactly what was said and I might be wrong but yeah, either way it seems unlikely. However, that would (depending on the spren) give the KR three or four surges, not two. Each spren gives two surges. Honorspren (Syl) give Gravitation and Adhesion. Cryptics/liespren (Pattern) give Illumination and Transformation. Whatever type of spren Jasnah has gives Transformation and Transportation.- 52 replies

Dark Talent Typos Thread [DT Spoilers]
Sand Master replied to ccstat's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
The "note" note I think is a joke. I certainly found it funny. The "flare" should indeed be "flair," you are correct. Using an Android myself, I saw the umbrellas in Isaac Stewart's name. I am using Google Play Books for the app. As for Bastille's note, I (using an e-reader) found it just fine. I was shocked to think that it might have ended where it seemed to, so I was frantically searching for anything that said otherwise. This was especially true because I saw how much of the book there was remaining, although most of that turned out to be the pages and pages of footnotes, along with the Acknowledgements and reading exercises. -
1. Adolin. Because I still hate Sadeas (as a person, not character). 2. Axies, he's hilarious. 3. Dalinar. Because I still hate Amaram (ditto to Sadeas). 4. Kaladin. 5. This one is tough. I really like both... Going to have to give it to Teft. He's had Kaladin's back a lot. 6. Another tough one... Probably Sigzil, because while I understand why Szeth did what he did, I disagree with his decision to do so. 7. Lift. She's still awesome. Plus, still don't like the guy going around murdering kindly old men. 8. Zahel.

@Argent That's right! I remember thinking that the way the ardent said that was odd, but I had forgotten about it until you pointed that out. The fact that the ardent was so vague and didn't explain what he meant is very suspicious to me.

But some of the Reshi Isles are actually very close to Alethkar. And even the farthest ones aren't as far away as Shinovar. And even if they were that far, there's no guarantee that they came from Alethkar in the first place. There are other Vorin kingdoms.

So I recently finished re-reading Way of Kings for the third time. While reading it, I remember placing a note (ebook version, so I have highlighted and noted a lot of passages) about what at the time seemed a relatively unimportant scene. Then, browsing the forums just now, I read this question to Brandon: The reason I find this so interesting is because the passage I noted (in chapter 54: Gibletish) contains Highprince Hatham, Dalinar, and an ardent talking to a Natan man. The ardent says this: "One wonders if you are equally devout when not standing on our soil." I found this a bit strange, since the only place on Roshar where soil exists is in Shinovar, and we've seen that practically nobody knows what it is. It's also not an idiomatic phrase, since Rysn's babsk has to explain to her the meaning of the word. Yet here is an Alethi ardent on the Shattered Plains, about as far away from Shinovar as you can get, using the word soil. Even if we consider that this ardent somehow traveled to Shinovar at one point, and that he grew comfortable enough with their phrases to use soil metaphorically like this, why would he do so when surrounded by people who won't know what he's talking about? At first I had considered this to simply be a slip-up in the writing, since to us on Earth that sort of phrase is relatively commonplace. But after seeing this mention that you could discover worldhoppers by examining their speech, and then a very similar example being used to demonstrate, I am suddenly less sure. Thoughts?

Well, it's slightly more complicated than that. Take Alcatraz for an example. It's not just that Bastille is the first girl around his age that he meets. It's also that they save each other's lives on multiple occasions, spend a significant amount of time together in very stressful and tense situations, and in doing so learn a great deal about one another that under normal circumstances would likely take months or even years to learn. All of this emotion and tension would likely make you have very strong feelings about anyone in that situation, positive or negative. it just happens to be positive with Bastille. Also, you're right, it is pretty common in Sanderson's books. Personally though, I don't care. It worked for me in Mistborn. Worked in Reckoners. Is currently working for me in Alcatraz and Stormlight. As far as I'm concerned, just because it's been done before doesn't make it bad.

Yeah. That, along with Avada Kedavra and by Being sued by J.K. Rowling were my favorites. -

What the Hell Shallan? Also Kaladin.
Sand Master replied to NathanielHellman's topic in Stormlight Archive
I know that the conversation has kind of steered away from this, and I don't want to get it off track but I felt the need to speak up for Kaladin and Shallan ending up together. Ordinarily I wouldn't have said anything, but I've seen a lot of people saying that it won't happen, and a combination of my tendency to play devil's advocate and my own support for Shalladin prompted me to respond. I personally don't see why it would be such an issue. I think they have great chemistry together, and the scene in question that started this whole thread (where they have a shouting match) was one of the strongest instances of this to me. Yeah they sort of got off on the wrong foot, but they didn't come away actively hating one another. It was more of a general annoyance. Plus, Shallan is the only one we've seen (except perhaps Wit) be able to equal or surpass Kaladin in clever wordplay. In the same way, Kaladin is the only one we see do the same to Shallan. Already they think and act in similar ways. This is seen again when Shallan is inspecting the remains of a crem-covered building on the Shattered Plains. Only she and Kaladin see it for what it truly is. I'm not trying to change anyone's hopes or predictions for the series here; everyone is of course free to ship whomever they wish. I'm just trying to provide a couple examples that show that it wouldn't be unreasonable if they did end up together, since many claim that it wouldn't make any sense.- 25 replies

The End [DT Spoilers]
Sand Master replied to HoidvsVoid's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
I didn't notice that! Just checked and you're absolutely right. That's awesome. I was reading the ebook version, and all the footnotes were sort of "stored" in the back of the book, so to me it looked like it was about fifty pages longer than it really was. So I was really surprised when it ended when it did, since I was also thinking about the Worldspire reference and how it couldn't be close to done yet. That's a great way to describe it. I wonder if the Aes Sedai were the inspiration for phrasing it that way, or if he's always been that devious. -
It's an interesting theory, but I have two issues with it. First, as @The One Who Connects mentioned, the lighteyes use dahn, but the darkeyes use nahn, which doesn't fit this theory. And second, this theory is based off of a way that people speak English. But they're not speaking English, they're speaking Alethi. It's just written in English because we obviously wouldn't understand it otherwise. So for an Alethi word to have an English origin, it wouldn't make much sense.

Do we know if this is even possible? And if it is, would Nightblood consume the Intent along with the Investiture? If it was just the Investiture and not the Intent then that might be a viable way of getting rid of Odium.
-
Right, so if you are already full of hate, then Odium won't do much to you. But if you only hate certain things (like lawlessness), I doubt that would be enough. The Shardic Intent isn't a sentient entity, so it's not like it's something you can trick. Odium's Intent is just pure divine hatred. If there was anything the Vessel didn't hate, I feel like that would quickly change.

Actually we can't safely conclude that the Plate isn't formed of dead spren. The spren that would conceivably form Plate are very different from the spren that form the Blade, so you can't assume that what is true for one is also true for the other. Now, maybe it is the case that if the Plate were formed by spren, Radiants would hear screaming. But maybe it's that the minor spren (like windspren) are essentially mindless. They're just physical manifestations of Cognitive ideas. The wind has no mind. Neither does a windspren. Only when they are bonded to a human do they begin to form a personality and individuality. When that bond is broken, they "die," reverting back to the mindless form that we see Syl in during the beginning of WoK. So since that mindlessness is already the equivalent of death for spren, then they can't "die" if the KR breaks their Oaths, meaning no screaming. Now I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case. We still don't know anything for sure. But there's no solid evidence proving that it's impossible, and it does seem to be the most likely theory so far (though I also like the solid Stormlight idea).

I DON'T KNOW NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE!

@8giraffe8 Nope, I had no idea. Just going to go ahead and change my whole post real quick... (After reading what I just typed, I realize it might sound sarcastic. It's not, in any way. I honestly thought they were fighting.)

Hasn't it been determined though, that eventually the Intent overpowers the Vessel with time? It even says in the Letter that Ati was kind and generous, but when under the influence of Ruin he pretty much went crazy and started destroying everything he could. I think that if anyone were to take up Odium, they would likely experience something very similar to Ati with Ruin.

Was... was that a Batman v Superman joke?
-
So we know that fabrials are powered by spren trapped in their gemstones. Could any spren be trapped in a gemstone? If so, does that mean that Syl could be trapped at some point? How would that affect the Nahel bond and Kaladin's Surgebinding? Would there be a way for her to break out? Would it be painful for her?
