  1. were you actively palying tennis while typing that update? because that would be impressive
  2. it took me 2 tries to get into Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel, but it was definitely worth it.
  3. Yes and Yes. But do bear in mind that the Discworld books all mix in a lot of humor as well. Some people will also tell you that you shouldn't read the books in Chronological order, since the first few are weaker entries, but I don't hold with that. however if the first book or two don't hold your interest, Guards! Guards! or Small Gods make fore reasonably good entry points as well. the former is the first book to focus on The Watch, all of which tend to be strong, and the latter is probably the best stand-alone in the series.
  4. 297. It is always a bad idea to systematically opress people - opression tends to result in heroes. 298. it is especially always a bad idea to systematically opress peopel who are genetically prone to supernatural powers 299. crazy, old hermits make the best teachers/mentors
  5. it continues through the later two books, and there is a reason for it. oddly the third book has a combination of first person, second person and third person narration, and i think it became clear somewhere in the second book who the narrator is, so by the third the narrator interjects parenthetical statements and digressions into the narration more and more - it begins to feel less like a traditional book and more like someone telling a story, which I think you wouldn't get from just a generic third person limited narrator. She does a bit of this in the Inhertiance trilogy too, so if you've read that then some of the techniques will be a bit familiar.
  6. Just finished the Broken Earth trilogy. Still not a fan of the second person narration style, but it got less grating as I got used to it. Overall they were pretty good.
  7. Yea, Brandon wasn't ever quite able to nail Mat's character, though its worse in Gathering Storm and improves a bit in the other 2 books
  8. For me he varied a lot. its been a while since I read it, so it is hard to place the feeling exactly, but I think the issue I had is that his temper seemed to be out of control, and there were times when its targets were way off. I understand that he isnt exactly supposed to be fully in control of himself at that point, but it is still hard to sympathize sometimes.
  9. Quentin is terrible, but later books have Julia and Janet PoVs and they are both great. There are huge swaths of Wheel of Time that I have trouble reading because of Rand. If not for Mat, and to a lesser extent Perrin, I don't think I'd have been able to get through those books. which would have ben a pity since it likely means I wouldn't have read any Sanderson.
  10. Is it though inconsistent with the 2nd law of thermodynamics? It's been a while since I watched it and I'm not sure if the rules in the first anime were 100% consistent with the rules in Brotherhood/manga (equivalent exchange yes, but other later stuff is unclear to me) but I'm pretty sure there was energy coming in from somewhere that would allow them to remain more or less consistent with the 2nd law. agree with the rest though.
  11. played ruby, platinum, white, x, and fire red. didnt play heart gold/soul silver or omega ruby/alpha sapphire or sun/moon. one of my biggest annoyances with the later gens is how they put legendaries into the plot so that you have to encounter them. Also the fire/fighting starters, not a fan of that particular type combination at all.
  12. Not optimistic about the starters, but i'll reserve final judgement until i see some final forms. can't say much more than that really, without more info, but i've generally been disappointed by every game ive played post Gen 2 (including the remakes of the gen 1 games). All that said, I don't have a switch so its all sort of moot anyway.
  13. to be fair, i have all of those except the last 2 already.
  14. good to know, thanks.
  15. does it include the various short stories set in the Earthsea world? or just the novels?
  16. yea, i realize that, but it isn't something i do often.
  17. And since they stopped showing actual reputation number next to posts, I'm not actually sure how many people know which ranks are higher and which are lower anymore. some are easy enough (darkeyes is pretty low, full feruchemist is probably higher than misting) but others are hard to compare (how does Elantrian compare to full feruchemist? i have no idea anymore)
  18. I'm working on the first book of Broken Earth, and I have to say while I can get past that, the fact that every other chapter is in second person is kinda bugging me.
  19. on the other hand, we know the characters have been wrong about things before. they probably know what they are talkign about for this one, but their knowledge isnt perfect
  20. huh, it's been a while since I read the annotations, I didn't realize the priests knew the methods for returned to conceive children. I did know it was possible though.
  21. Do they? the new godking doesn't have to be the child of the current one, they get a new one whenever they come across a baby that returns. The priests know the method of awakening wihtout speaking a command, so they can teach the godking to transfer his breaths, but do we have reason to believe they know how a returned can reproduce?
  22. as a rule, Warbreaker should come before Stormlight because there are Warbreaker characters that noticeably pop up in stormlight.
  23. i quite liked Jessica Jones (both seasons, but season 1 is better). It wasn't perfect, but I think it was still Good. and if we're allowed to grade season by seaon Daredevil Season 1 was pretty good too, and I'd probably include Altered Carbon in the good list as well. beyond that they are enough of a mix of good and bad that I wouldn't feel confident saying any of them were "good" wihtout caveats. though i wouldn't necessarily say "bad" either, at least for the ones I have seen.
  24. I really liked the original Anime, but I couldn't quite get into Brotherhood, specifically because of how close yet not it is. parts of it felt like retreads that i didnt need to watch, and other parts felt weird because of how completely different they were. eventually i decided to watch somethign else, and never quite got back to it. point being you may have that same problem switching from one to the other.
