Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.
Dunkum replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'll second this: Vin was only able to beat Zane because she knew exactly how Atium worked, and specifically put herself into a frame of mind to react to Zane's reaction to her. If anything a shardbearer would probably have a worse reaction than average - they are so used to being able to shrug off anyhting short of a shardblade that they would never have a reason to expect someone to be able to hit them with that kind of accuracy. Heck, theres a good argumant to be made that Kaladin only managed it because he was already in the process of Bonding Syl. I'd bet on someone in plate almost completely ignoring arrows and daggers and coins, which would be to their detriment in the Atium case where the mistborn would know in advance exactly where to aim to get a kill shot. -

even without Atium, i'd bet on the fullborn over an Elantrian in Elantris, unless they were specifically prepared -

It would take too long to draw if you had to draw them every single time, but it seems likely that many could be built in and ready for activation with a much simpler trigger. Someone mentioned it either here or in the other thread: one of AonDor's strengths is the ability to create magical items, particularly when combined with its inherent flexibility. -

not to mention that it would need to be a supremely well aimed coin to kill before stormlight healing adresses the problem. -

Don't forget copper. there is every reason to believe that a coppercloud, whcih specifically protects against foreign investiture, would likely inhibit soulcasting (and potentially other surges as well). Also, not related to this one, but I had trouble grabbing the exact quote from a prior page: I don't know why anyone thinks lightweaving would actually be all that useful. A skilled lightweaver can fool multiple senses, and a very skilled one should be able to fool tin-enhanced senses, but you'd need and extremely skilled lightweaver with prior knowledge of allomancy to fool the metal sense of steel and iron. Not to mention that bronze should be able to detect active uses of investiture. not that this particualrly changes the end result. Blade and Plate are overwhelming, and even just holding stormlight is probably equivalent to a light burn of pewter. Without Atium, its hard to see a mistborn winning. -

we know that there are plates in Elantris that are basically touch activated lights. thats a pretty simple case, but it seems to indicate that a basic "touch this to activate" interface is possible, and can probably be combined with other Aons for other effects. more important is what else they can make as a trigger. AonDor is generally compared to programming, as has been noted, so it seems likely that a particularly expert user could probably find a way to make other triggers. for the purposes of a fight, thought activated triggers would be nice, as would triggers activated by damage to armor or wearer. that we know of. do we actually have the full set of Aons and their meanings? I was under the impression that we only ever got a sampling. -

What are you playing right now?

slowly making my way through Xenoblade Chronicles. Had to pause for a week or so, but back at it now. its slow going because I'm taking the time to complete quests as I get them, so I haven;t made it through Tephra cave yet because I keep getting side tracked. should probably get through soon though, as of the 5 quests I have still open, 1 im about to turn in, 3 require going further than I have gotten yet to complete, and the last requires me to go to an area where even the regular monsters destroy me, to say nothing of the boss monster guarding the item i need to grab. This last was given to me by a little girl whose deceased father had told her ot go there if her mother was ever in trouble, which is completely irresponsible of him. -
this would have the opposite effect, actually. increased healing has to come from increased cell generation. human cells can only divide so many times before they fail, so increasedhealing, from a biological perspective, would cause you to burn through your life faster. that said, i'm pretty sure it doesnt actually work that way in the cosmere, and instead works along the lines of what RShara was saying.

I think a lot is going to depend on how recruitment has been going during the timeskip. at the end of oathbringer, most orders only have 1 member, if that. I think the lightweavers with 1 member and 1 squire (who was still stuck in Kholinar, if he even survived), are easily the second most populous order. only the windrunners have substantially more, but even then there are only maybe a couple dozen sworn windrunners, and the squires are dependent on the full knights for their powers. those sorts of numbers are gonna constrain your options. If they've been able to recruit more during the interval, then there are a few things you can do. for instance a strike force of a windrunner, and squires, plus maybe a lightweaver or two and an edgedancer or truthwatcher for healing could probably stir up local resistance forces inside enemy territory and fight a pretty decent guerilla war. they might even be able to recruit more squires and/or knights from among the populace as they go, potentially increasing their strength. but this strategy doesnt work if you dont have enough knights to risk losing them.

well, the WoB suggests that insect silk might not be particularly usable because it would be infused with rock. those other things will exist, but since you pretty much can't raise most mammals outside of Shinovar, even wool would probably be a pretty expensive luxury

hard for me to gauge just how much I can actually comment on this without it devolving into spoiler territory, so I'll avoid it for the most part except to say that Elayne is definitely a main character, certainly more so than the other ones you mention, and almost certainly more so than Moiraine.
-
at the very least it would be a lot harder than just getting underneath one and stabbing upward. there is no way that there is anything vital within one shardb;ade's length from teh bottom of the carapace. youd probably almost have to tunnel your way into the thing

Rand POVs are pretty minimal in that book, if memory serves. both in terms of quantity and in terms of how they are written. I think Egwene/Elayne/Nynaeve get a bunch and Perrin gets a bunch. Mat gets several once he is good and healed. I didnt remember Perrin monopolizing so much of the beginning of the book though, but its been a while.

I think a-bronze is useful enough, and bronze is available enough, that you'd probably use it. unlike gold which is pretty useless allomantically (so far at least), or something like bendalloy which is harder to come by, or aluminum which manages to be both.
-
no reason to assume they wouldnt use A-bronze, but not really any reason to assume they'd be a savant either. i doubt A-bronze would end up being all that useful in a figth anyway. not 0, btu not particularly high on the list

reference for this, because I was pretty sure there was a WOB to this effect, but didnt have time to look for it before: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/316-general-signed-books-2018/#e9199

I think you might be underrating this, though to get maximal use out of it would require combining it with some things. but basically, there is no reason to belive this is limited to the traditional 5 senses. for one thing, most of those senses could reasonably be broken down further - e.g. color vision is moderated by different cells in your eyes than the ones that detect the intensity of light (rods vs cones) so for someone well educated in that area, it might be plausible that their understanding of the sense might allow them to selectively store color vision at which point tapping it could allow them to gain a similar heightened color perception like the 3rd(?) heightening, without havign to worry about overwhelming themselves with the intensity of the light. that's just one example, but other non-traditional senses include your sense of balance, your sense of proprioception (ability to know where parts of your body are in relation to each other wihtout seeing them), distinct sense for pain, pressure, and heat (as opposed to a single sense of touch), distinct senses for each individual flavor, etc. but more interesting to me is the idea that things like the blue lines from burning iron/steel or the pulses from bronze could be considered distinct senses (or the life-sense from having breaths). in which case someone who somehow has access to that in addition to tin compounding could drastically increase the sensitivity of these extra-normal senses.
-
good to know. I hadn't realized that, but it does make some sense. spiking yourself with extra bronze to pierce your own cloud should still work, though
-
I think you can sense pulses from outside the cloud. also, if you have a spike, or some other thing that enhances your bronze so that it is stronger than your copper, then you could pierce your own coppercloud and sense what is going on inside as well.

Queerness in the Cosmere: What we know and what we could have
Dunkum replied to Xoror's topic in Cosmere Discussion
preemptive apology if any of the below comes off as offensive. it is definitely not intended to be, but this isnt a topic I spend a lot of time discussing, and i'm definitely out of touch with current thought and terminology etc.; so if anything here comes off poorly, please let me know and i'll make an effort to correct it. this thing with Jasnah could be specifically because of her position in society. it's one thing for a low danh (nanh? i forget which is which) darkeyed girl to get together with another woman, but for the daughter of the king, its a whole different situation. in most societies, she'd be expected to marry in order to forge or bolster alliances, so her potentially being a lesbian would undermine that substantially. one thing to note of importance - my, admittedly very limited, understanding of medical transition tools in our society is that for the majority of people they would end up being imperfect. that is to say that with a combination of hormones and, potentially, surgery (and others? again, not my area of expertise) you can reshape a body and fool it into behaving mostly like the opposite sex, but it won't ever be 100% - most notably, perhaps, in the realm of reproduction. But with cosmere healing, that actually isn't the case. if you transition using progression or stormlight or a goldmind etc, it would presumably go all the way, potentially literally overwriting chromosomes and DNA in order to make the physical match the spritual/cognitive ideal; in all biological respects, your body's sex post-transition should end up matching your gender identity. that in turn would alter how post-transition trans people are thought of; just as an example, I would imagine that there would be a lot less stigma around that, and it would, for example undermine the idea that you still see today where someone post-transition is still considered to be their birth sex - if only because the biology would work to disprove that in the cosmere. on the other hand, if such tools are fairly readily accessible, then it might increase the stigma for trans people who have not transitioned. -
sure, and we don't necessarily have a clear idea of how much investiture the forging itself takes, but I don't think the selish investiture storm is going anywhere because af a few copies of nightblood floating around
-
hard disagree, i put Eye of the World and Great Hunt near the bottom personally. Dragon Reborn is up near the top.
-
i mean, eventually, if you made enough. nightblood only takes something like a few thousand breaths, which isnt even really a dent in the level of investiture coming from one shard, let alone 2. as long as the stamp is able to channel that much investiture then you should be fine.

right, so thermoelectric is another example that doesnt do a turbine, you are correct. but i don't think that is generally used for large scale things. its used in space probes because they have minimal power requirements (relative to say an office building or whatever) and need to last a long time so a form with no moving pieces is ideal, but for larger applications, we have more efficient methods of energy generation. as for solar, it depends a bit on what kind of solar you are talking. solar panels aren't generally using heat , they are based on the photo-electric effect which directly converts light to electricity. possibly heat is related to that, i'm no expert, but i don't believe so. there is a different kind of solar that basically concentrates solar energy to one point to heat up a medium and that one, I think, does actually end up using heat to run a turbine. this is also how at least some kinds of meat thermometers work - the heat difference between the inside and outside generates a current, whose properties can be measured and then mathed into a heat value - but I get the impression that they still need batteries or a plug to power the components, so even a difference of several hundred degrees F is likely insufficient to generate enough power to do much with. though it probably also depends on the size of the wire between them and who knows what else. i only know the basics of electricity and circutis and the like.
