Book Recommendations
Pestis the Spider replied to Silus - Shard of Flame's topic in Entertainment Discussion
For sci-fi I highly recommend Isaac Asimov's "Robots" and "Foundation" series. And also everything that Peter Watts ever wrote. -

I personally don't believe this test is really accurate. I feel like the authors misentepreted at least some of the orders. I mean, if you choose "bookish" answers, you get "Truthwatcher", if you choose "happy-go-lucky answers", you get Willshaper. And I really think like the test doesn't ask about what actually defines a Radiant. I get that maybe being "bookish" is common trait amongst Truthwatchers as beeing extremely creative is among Lightweavers, but that's not what defines them. Also, does anyone know where all these descriptions of Orders from the results page come from?

I'm currently reading The Skull Throne by Peter V. Brett. I think it is comparable to the previous books in the series, however I can't really say for sure, since this is the first book in the series that I read in English so it in general sounds slightly different to me.

This probablility is 1 in 8, not 1 in 16. It's 2x4 not 2x2x4 as I assume you're calculating. 1 in 16 would be the probability of all of 4 radiants and their spren being e.g. female. Furthermore the probability for them binding with same sex is exactly the same. So what's the point of this calculation at all? Also, there is this rule in statistics to not to make statistics (well, mean is fine, but nothing more complicated) on groups smaller than five, because the statistical error is just crazily high, and there is high probability of the results being totally wrong. I mean... your test group is so small that if you make the ratio can be considered high (twice as much opposite pairings) and low (just one person difference, to get 1:1 ratio). And Chi square test also says the difference between these numbers is not significant (p=0.41), though that's not surprising, given the small sample size. So I really think you're trying to find here something that is really not here. An I also think that Renarin got spren way before Dalinar, we just didn't know about it. So it's not "then, within few page".

Ooooooooooooooohhh. That makes sense. Yeah, probably you're right. xD I don't know where I've got that crazy idea from.

Same here, for both of them. Actually I don't even drink alcohol because I'm worried of loosing control over my mind and destroying it. Everyone I know considers me weird. O.o

I wouldn't say Cosmere is an object. O.o

Aladdin. Well, yes, I'm out of ideas.

The spheres? Gemstones?

Well, I think the same way about biology. I don't need a Nobel Prize, I don't need to be super important, but I want my career to be in biology in general. Just staying in this field is satisfying. But I'm just so worried that I wopuld screw something up so badly that will stop me from doing biology ever again, and that I will end up working in McDonald's.

Is that really fear? For me it sounds like reason and cautiousness, so things that kids 7/8 years old still lack. I feel uncomfortable about heights, when I am not in a secured position. I wouldn't go near the edge of canyon (well, maybe crawling, but my heart would probably burst), but if someone put a fence between me, and edge of the canyon, then sure, why not. It's just I don't trust my own body not to trip or slip, and then die miserably. And I really believe that all reasonable people should feel this way. I've also got this phobia of bees, wasps, hornets and needles. Yes, I consider it one phobia. But my worst fear is having my life completely destroyed. I am ambitious, I have high career plans etc. But I'm terrified that I will get cancer, which would force me to withdraw from uni, and that would stop me from doing what I want in life (since I wouldn't be able to get to the same uni for the second time, and it's a good uni). The same way I'm terribly afraid of getting disabled in any way, since that would also destroy my career plans. I'm worried that I'm going to sens so terrible CV to an employer that they will put me on "black list of people never to employ", and they will tell all their friends about it, and noone would want to employ me. I'm worried that I'm going to fail my exam at uni so bad that everyone would think that I'm such big idiot that they will say that I can't study this subject anymore. I'm worried that I'm going to score second best at uni, but still noone would want to employ me, since I'm not the best. Recently I'm also worried about loneliness. I have barely any friends (well, I would call the collegues, actually), I don't have boyfriend or anyone like that. For a moment I still have family, but nothing more, and I'm starting to really worry. I actually started to wonder, whether my sister would allow me to go for holidays with her and her family in the future, when she gets one, since I really doubt I'll be able to get my own family, not with the way I am. And I'm afraid she'll say "no" and that I will never go for holidays again, since going alone is terrible.

Nah, the only thing I can think of is The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder, but it's not set in contemporary London, but Victorian London, so that's not it. I'm so bad at this game.

Any more hints, maybe? Because the whole thread stopped, and I have no idea. O.o Is it a book?
-
Well, this is what I'm currently reading so it kind of matches the thread. And well, she did state in the interview that it is inspired by Kingdom of Poland. And she does seem to think that Agnieszka Skrawek Nieba is a Polish fairy tale. And even Random House states it's based on Polish fairy tales. And most importantly: everyone reviewing this book on Goodreads and other websites is like "omg, Polish and Slavic culture, omg", so people do seem to think that is is all Polish culture. The descriptions of this book in various online shops also suggest so. And it's not. It all just creates one big misunderstanding. It bothers me. EDIT: Found this: And I don't mean that it needs to be exact retelling of Polish folklore. But if in your example author/publisher/everyone states that this book is based on the King Arthur's legend, and then suddenly there is William Wallace as one of Arthur's Knights, Henry VIII of England as Arthur-type-character's father and other mixes like this in almost equal amounts to King Arthur's legend (even though author/publisher only mentions the King Arthur as inspiration) and because of that readers start to think that all these people were actually part of story about King Arthur? is that really a good thing, to confuse people like that? But, yeah, let's finish here. I just asked about it, because I though that maybe there is something happening later in the book that is really what drawns people in, and that could convince me to try to continue this book with a little more enthusiasm. Guess, I'll try to find out on my own, and if I don't then fortunately my "to read" list is really long. EDIT: I'm really sorry about going slightly off-topic with this whole discussion. I'm done now.

Well, you didn't understand what I meant. I find the "statement" that this book is inspired by Polish culture laughable, not the Polish culture itself. Maybe I didn't put it correctly, so sorry for misunderstanding. I am familiar with Slavic culture. Hell, I'm 100% Polish person, born in Poland, raised on Polish legends, fairy-tales and history. And I can say that Naomi is not familiar with any of it. She states that this book is based on Polish culture and Kingdom of Poland, but when I tried to read it I just felt... annoyed? Because it looks like the author maybe tried to do some research, but failed miserably. I'll put in the spoiler why I think so, because explanation is really long, and kind of off-topic. Also I still think that the characters are as flat as the floor in my flat. And there is just action, action, action in this book, nothing else. I don't know, I'll try read it further and see what happens, but even if the characters suddenly change into multidimensional full fledged people, it won't change anything from what I wrote in the "spoiler". EDIT: Spelling mistakes everywhere.

I actually had the feeling it was way to fast-paced with no space for world descriptions and chcaracter development. Though I have to say that I am very (very) biased towards this book, because the book states that it's based on Polish culture and Kingdom of Poland, which I find totally laughable, so my opinion might not be accurate. Nope. And we're also not talking about: "Uprooted. How Breslau Became Wrocław during the Century of Expulsions". Interestingly, goodreads shows that there are quite a lot of books with the same title, though most of them have less than 10 ratings. O.o

Can someone please tell me, what's so amazing about this book? I started it last week, and read barely 8 chapters, and really I have my doubts if it's worth continuing. Am I missing something?
-
I have the same problem as the OP here. I'm looking for this good epic fantasy books with vast world, probably travel, fights and general epicness. I'm asking, because I am also interested in reading a book like this of a female author, because, to be honest, I've barely seen any, not to mention good ones. I've read some of the books you suggested in this thread, and I generally was not amazed. Long, long post in which I complain about books is hidden in spoiler. Do not read if you do not want to see something negative about your favourite books, and if you can't stand complaining. You've been warned.

Hellsing? Though these "fabulous posing techniques"... hmm...

True. But still, it has Batman and batman is DC, so I think it counts. And true, may be not put together, I exaggerated a little. But TDK is a crazily good movie, and Marvel has yet to make one as good as that. I don't hate it. I actually watch it, still. I just consider it to be a bad show that's all. And I really think that mid season 1 it doesn't get any better. I'm not saying it's not fun to watch from time to time, but it's not as fun as loads of other shows and it's definitely not as good. And I really don't consider it to be good.

Oh well. I guess I'm out of contest then.

But that's definitely a movie, right? Because you confirmed it's for children, but never actually confirmed that is a movie.

Any new questions?
