  1. @Sunbird Yeah! If someone complains about it being in the wrong forum, I'll beat them up!
  2. I got a book called Abductive Reasoning. It's for work and fun!
  3. To be sure, I don't have a problem with the philosophical digressions. In fact, that's how people tend to act. Plenty of times people will tell how it is, be skeptical of another view or rile against religion. These are all very ancient topics of discussion, something that Erikson as a trained archeologist is familiar with. It is also interesting to note that, though Erikson leans left, The Malazan Book of the Fallen is a very pro military work.
  4. Though I'm sure there is a specific message Erikson wants to get across, the characters mostly have varied leftist views.
  5. You can get me ranting on this point. There are lots of good stuff out there that you will not find unless you broaden your horizon. But people do not because of the Fandom Condition. Essentially, when you become a fan of something, you remain almost completely devoted to that fandom and things like it. Take this site, for example: a lot of times, people will ask for recommendations of books "like Brandon's". This has a couple effects. You get an exclusionary culture in the sense that there is now a specific canon of books to be read in order to interact with members of the Fandom. Second, you reinforce the narrowness of your perspective so that you can only understand/like things of the fandom. Anything with a different viewpoint, style or genre becomes difficult to get into. And because we like to reinforce our biases, we claim this is because all this other "stuff" is inferior to the product of our fandom. That's why we end up with sincere, absurd statements like, "Harry Potter IS the best series of books evah!"
  6. That's Book 2, The Drawing of the Three! I'm not some sort of depository of book summaries and analysis, here to amuse you!
  7. There are two things to consider with the Malazan books: 1) Erikson and Esslemont conflate authorial reticence with subtlety. A lot of mystery and confusion is the result of just plain withholding of information. This is fine with some aspects (like the actual big plot point of the entire series) but at other times is frustrating (like with almost anything to do with the Tiste or Warrens or Holds). 2) There is a smidgen of post modernism in there. That means there are some points that are... inconsistent... depending on the viewpoint. If you love the consistency that Sanderson & co work very hard on to maintain, know that sometimes Erikson and Esslemont will contradict each other... just because!
  8. Time for a betting pool: what will get finished first: the Kingkiller Chronicles or a Song of Ice and Fire?
  9. Delightful is correct. With the recent push for movies with a female perspective and the ensuing pushback, the comparison is going to be made.
  10. I got my art book from Germany! They contain representations of paintings by a Michael Hutter! Wonderful paintings... unholy paintings! Woooo!
  11. Well, off to play a Living Card Game with my brother. We expect to be overwhelmed by evil, eldritch forces!
  12. Mwahaha! My evil influence spreads!
  13. I was always allowed to read in my literature class, otherwise I would "spoil" the text during class discussion. Classic example: when discussing Beowulf, the assigned reading only went up to past Grendel's defeat. A co-student critiqued that Beowulf was uninteresting because he was invincible. I responded that that wasn't the case because Beowulf ends up being killed by a dragon. I wasn't allowed to participate in class discussions henceforth
  14. She won't have to find out, since there are no more full Jedis to train her since Yoda died. She'll have to rely on her passion and Luke Skywalker as her master... practically making her a Sith!
  15. I, too, would want in!
  16. RT's 97 % score only indicates that 97% of the reviews are favorable. The aggregate score is much closer to your rating. Which is good! I look forward to it!
  17. I'll be seeing it tomorrow. Must be nice to finally have a decent, coherent movie in the DCEU, huh @Quiver?
  18. And now, I'm listening to the new Roger Waters album! Wooo! Party!
  19. He might find out a little quicker if you let @PeterAhlstrom know Congratulations and (perhaps a bit redundant) Mazel Tov @Delightfully Smoak& @Pinnacle-Ferring!
