  1. So we're going to start this post with my favorite television show ever. And then move on into some funnies. And we'll end on an adorabsy note.
  2. Well, Jordan would have finished WoT on his own, ASoIaF would be done as well, I suspect. I'm actually not certain about Kingkiller, considering that I've heard it's the drive for perfection that makes the wait so long, not Rothfuss's procrastination.
  3. Why thank you! That saves me quite a bit of time. I'm still hunting down some Elantris stuff before I edit the list in the OP. Edit: Official List is updated with a link to Sel Pronunciation guide, and various section headers (I can't get too ambitious now).
  4. The night's air was cool, the wind licking his face. Kantern stood atop the roof of a shack in a small village, the night sky vast and silent above him. He loved the night. Everything about it was perfect. Quiet, dark, and solitary, the night allowed him to be himself The village sprawled before him. Hosting around 30 people, this night's kill was going to be easy. So easy, in fact, that he didn't bring any back-up. The village was small enough that they shared only one well. All Kantern had to do was pour the contents of his poison pouch into the well, and tomorrow the whole village would be dead. Kantern enjoyed the easy jobs. Hopping off the shack's roof, Kantern landed silently. He strolled over to the well, gave one last look around the area to make sure no one was watching, and popped the cap on the poison pouch. Holding the opening up to his nose, he took a big whiff. Scent-less. Holding the pouch over the well, he tipped it, pouring it's contents out.
  5. I have to agree with Loni and Unhinged; I think the gems are only necessary for those who can't naturally hold Stormlight. I thought the books made it fairly obvious that the gems were only there to act as Stormlight batteries. When the gems run out, the plate gets heavy. A surgebinder then wouldn't need the gems at all, as Kaladin shows in the arena with the helm-gauntlet.
  6. I actually love the consistency. I think it's a tremendous idea to have a consistent look and layout of covers. That might just be me though. As for the images themselves, it would be nice to get a cover image in which the main color isn't purple/blue. If the image itself is what you were referring to, I kind of agree.
  7. None of the posts in the game so far have mentioned Newan's character. Winter's post comes closest, but he merely references the tribe, so if you were to make a new character within Newan's tribe, effectively adopting it as your own, there should be no in-game issues.
  8. Hello! To begin I want to say I am putting this thread in Cosmere Theories due to possible spoilers, as the thread will involve all of Brandon's books (including non-Cosmere potentially). Essentially the point of the thread is for us to share information about word pronunciation in regards to Brandon's works. I got the idea because I wanted to know how to pronounce "Austre." Then I ran a quick search for another thread like this, and there wasn't one (that I could find)! So here we are. Post here if you want to know how to pronounce something, and I'll try to keep a table of "official" pronunciations as we learn them. Obvious inclusions are the Elantris names. I'll get to the list at some point. Here's a fun WoB for you! source Well, my edit to put the WoB in glitched somehow and the rest of my post got deleted, so here it is again: Official Pronunciation List - Thanks to FeatherWriter for posting much of this in the last post of this very page! So anyways, how do you pronounce "Austre?" I've always used "ah-stray," but it could be pronounced like austere (ah-steer), or even as "ah-ster." Or is the "au" pronounced more like "a-oo" than "ah?"
  9. Hello! Welcome to the forums. A good introduction would be to go to this page of the very site you're on!
  10. *Shudders from the thought of giving Prof a Green Lantern Ring*
  11. Szeth did know it was an Honorblade. Szeth however seems to feel that many of its properties were like those of the Deadblades, and not the Sprenblades. Brandon, when asked questions about this, always responds with the note along the lines of "there's a number of things Szeth says he can't do that Kaladin can do...there's something going on there..." This implies that the Honorblade acts much more like a Sprenblade than a Deadblade. We know Szeth required the 10 heartbeats, even though Honorblades don't, nor do Sprenblades. His Honorblade required it because Szeth believed that it did, and therefore it was always 10 heartbeats before the blade would appear. My opinion on the matter is that Honorblades can do all the things Sprenblades can (change shape, heal spiritual wounds, etc.). The books note that the Spren molded their physical prescence after the Honorblades, so I don't think they would add abilities. In addition, why would the KR have been so intent on convincing the Heralds to become their leaders if their own weapons were superior to the Heralds'? It just makes sense that Szeth's Honorblade did not function the same way as Honorblades normally do because he believed that the only ability gained was the surgebinding (and therefore intake of stormlight as well).
  12. Well when your cats are outdoor cats then definitely don't declaw them. My cat is an indoor-all-the-time kinda gal. That being said, all the cat collars I've ever seen involve a clip-mechanism that releases if too much force is put on it, in the event the cat has a kerfluffle with a tree branch (so it can't accidentally hang itself). My cat learned within two weeks how to remove it herself, so she just goes around un-collared as a result. Not that she'd run away though, she's terrified of everything.
  13. We didn't declaw my cat for the express purpose of giving her a means to defend herself from the dogs. The canines definitely do learn their lessons. It's hilarious.
  14. To me, David's dad is the kind of guy who would get powers, attempt to use them for good until he used enough to feel the evil seep into him, and then stop using them. The discovery that the powers themselves turn you evil would potentially be enough to cause the man to lose all his cheery-ness, too. Think of how depressing that is? The one thought that keeps you going, gives you hope that one day everything will be better, is suddenly and brutally snatched away from you? That's soul crushing, suicide inducing stuff right there.
  15. Mistborn: Well of Ascension
  16. One of my best friends did the same thing to me. I finally got him to agree to read a Sanderson book. I wanted him to read Warbreaker but he insisted on Mistborn. After he was done he told me he really disliked it. He said he didn't like the magic system, thought the characters were a little unrealistic, and that the combat felt like a video game. He then said he wouldn't read anything else Sanderson wrote if that is considered his best (I tried arguing that I disagreed with that assessment but because the majority of the internet agrees I guess my argument is invalid...). Point is, haters gonna hate. No, actually the point is that some people just don't like what you do. It happens. I would like to take an additional moment to say that I completely disagree with you. As many people, including Brandon himself, have said, Mistborn: The Final Empire is a stand-alone novel that happens to be the first novel in a trilogy. What does that mean (I know I was confused prior to reading)? It means that the novel is self-contained. It has a beginning, middle, and end. There is build-up to a major climax and resolution that resolves the problems the same book introduced. It means the novel is a complete story. It also means that an average Joe can pick up TFE, give it a read, and then pass judgement on whether they'd like to continue with the series/author. It was honestly an ingenious move by Sanderson, because it provided an out for those who didn't enjoy the style or the story. In the event that someone is still confused, let us compare the first Mistborn to a first in a commonly known trilgoy, Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring. TFE establishes the characters and the plot, as any beginnings to a story should. For TFE, the plot is that there is a tyrranical racist that conquered the world, and the characters have to band together to overthrow him by killing him. By the end of the novel, that goal is accomplished, go team. FotR also establishes characters and the plot. For FotR, the plot is that there is a tyrranical racist who yearns to conquer the world (and destroy it), and the characters have to band together to stop him (via Ring in Mountain). Unlike TFE, the goal is not accomplished at the end of FotR, which is much more inline to the "generic" first book in a trilogy. So all in all, I'm saying that your statement of him needing to read the next two (which are, at least in my opinion, worse) would be like saying someone who has read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone needs to read the rest of them. They really don't. Harry Potter 1 is completely self contained, and nothing from the other six novels is necessary to complete the story. You should read the rest of them only if you want to know what happens next. Same with Mistborn. You should only read Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages if you particularly care about what happens after TLR is overthrown. So I wouldn't say his argument is invalid, because it's not. It's just unfrotunate.
  17. Right. It was just an observation on my part. Everything looks good then.
  18. My point was more along the lines of their ascension to Herald status (and being granted their non-Honorblade powers) possibly hapenning prior to the Oathpact, and potentially happening independant of Honor. I wasn't sure if it was definitively known that Honor specifically picked the ten of them and made them Heralds or not. I am in complete agreement that the Honorblades were granted to them by Honor.
  19. That does not prove that the Heralds were "chosen by Honor," but merely that the Oathpact was between two parties, the Heralds and Honor. Unless the Oathpact was the event in which the Heralds gained said title. Again my Herald knowledge is lacking. Otherwise the page looks good.
  20. Alright, I just ran through it a followed up with some of the sources. Grammatically the page looks fine. There are three things of note I want to make sure are brought to attention, in the event that you haven't already noticed: 1) Under Appearance and Personality, the third paragraph, you note "Her destruction of said art appears to be a perversion of her divine attribute of "Creative" and may be a symptom of her forsaking of the Oathpact." To my knowledge this is a popular theory, but not proven, a fact that is slightly noted on by the word "appears" but is not outright stated. If this hasn't been confirmed, I am unsure if we should tag it (as that makes a rather large header) or simply remove it. 2) Under Formation of the Oathpact, "Shalash was chosen by the Shard Honor to be one of his Heralds, this relationship was the formation of the Oathpact and as part of it Shalash received one of the Honorblades in exchange for her service." Is this confirmed? Specifically the "chosen by Honor" bit. I am lacking in my Herald knowledge. I checked the reference at the end of the paragraph, but Chapter 5 only proved the second half of the paragraph, so I'm not sold on this being confirmed. 3) Under Trivia, you have no reference. I had not heard of Shallash being featured, only Taln. Not that I'm doubting you, but oversourcing is better than undersourcing.
  21. Has a Shard made an entire planet before? I know they've created life on planets before, but the implication has been that the planets themselves were already there.
  22. ...isn't this the same as the "Without Looking It Up" thread in the Entertainment Forum?
  23. First and foremost, welcome! I hope you enjoy yourself here. And as a note, your english is excellent. I've read papers and notes by english speakers that had worse english than you.
  24. This is gorgeous! Definitely my new head canon.
