  1. This is awesome! Looking forward to seeing more.
  2. Here's a bit of what I have so far: Bahlo'dohr is a large, independent city state, a flourishing center of trade on the coast of the East Desert. Their biggest export is a silk derived from Rachnyx web, which can be dyed various vibrant colors. The silk is soft, smooth, and breathable. It is light, yet exceptionally durable. All these qualities are valuable assets in a hot climate. Many streets in Bahlo'dohr are shielded from the fierce sun by huge silk coverings, making the entire city seem to be a massive, colorful tent. Brightly colored silk catwalks hang between buildings, forming an intricate web, and it's quite possible to travel from one end of the city to the other without ever touching the ground. Locals often prefer taking these silkways, as the covered roads below are crowded with shops, markets, and foreign travelers. Those less familiar with the city might find the sagging, swaying motion of the silkways nauseating, but to those who call the city home, it's as comfortable as walking on solid ground. EDIT: Forgot to specify, Bahlo'dohr has a predominantly human population.
  3. Hey, you're one of my neighbors, right? What do you think about a desert subspecies that uses blue lumuoles to create convincing mirages, which they use to draw in prey?
  4. What page is your lumuole rulebook on, Mckeedee?
  5. Can I have a chunk on the coast of the western desert? Unless I want to run with the dragonfly race, that'd work out better in a rainforest or somesuch. I'll claim the western desert coast for now, but that may be subject to change. I'll let you know my final decision by Monday night.
  6. As far as which chunk of the world I want to claim, depends on which race I'm using. We need to fully work out the main, continent-spanning races before everyone dives into their own corners of the world, as we'll want these to be consistent.
  7. I've been assuming that there's a concrete reason the lumuoles are different from all other life on Diaemus, along the lines of what Mckeedee and Seonid have said. I also like the idea of having some fundamental guidelines as to what the magic is capable of, so there's some cohesion. I'm in favor of allowing plenty of room for creativity, but it still needs to feel like part of the same magic system. I think we discussed earlier that internally accessing lumuole energy through specially evolved organs is something few of the sapient races are capable of. This would fit with the idea that Diaemus has been cultivated by some external force: most of the sapient races are not native to the planet. This would mean that they'd have to get more creative. The question, then, is what sort of abilities do lumuoles grant to the flora and fauna of Diaemus? I like the idea of it primarily powering biological processes, but more supernatural effects would work as well. Lumuole energy might allow some species to change their physiology in certain ways, allowing them to thrive in nearly any environment and adapt as needed in any given situation. As far as the more supernatural effects, I say we come up with a basic idea of what the magic can effect. Is it an elements thing? This seems extremely arbitrary to me, but I'm throwing it in because it's been brought up. Does it manipulate fundamental forces and energies? We need at least a basic understanding of what the magic actually does, or there will be no cohesion. EDIT: There are two possible answers here. If they're symbiotes, then they might actually want to be found and ingested. Perhaps living inside larger lifeforms is an essential part of their life cycle. Not sure what the benefit would be for them, but it might have some connection to how they reproduce. The other possibility, of course, is that if they were engineered, they might have simply been built to glow so other lifeforms could actually find them.
  8. As I've mentioned previously, my vote is with the "lumin" model. (Lumin, lumule, luminite?) Although, as Seonid pointed out, it might actually be possible to combine the mineral and microorganism models. If the source is a specific element that the microorganisms were capable of filtering to access the power... That could work. I'm also in favor of some concrete guidelines as to what the magic actually does, but this is Brandon Sanderson's fansite, so I think we're probably all in agreement there.
  9. It would be redundant. Using the microorganism model, they can be found in or on plants, inside animals, in the water, in the soil, in the air, etc. While the mineral idea is intriguing, the the microorganisms fill the same function and, in my opinion, have a bigger "cool" factor.
  10. As far as magic goes, I'm still in favor of the microorganisms that filter magical energy. I like the variability and uniqueness of it. The idea of a cloud of bioluminescent organisms swarming around magical hotspots, creating a general glow in the air, is pretty awesome. I also like the idea of magical tech being based on containing and cultivating these organisms. I don't have a problem with the mineral idea, I just find the microorganisms more interesting.
  11. It's not an RP as of yet, but I don't see why you couldn't set up a roleplay once we've got everything layed out, though that might be a while. EDIT: Any artists here who might be able to do sketches of the major races and such?
  12. #1 is a good suggestion. Perhaps one of us should keep a running tally of our decisions thus far, and post updates periodically? EDIT: To avoid double posting: It might be more of a matter of diet. Frequently feeding on the krill interacts with the specific biology of the organism, giving them their unique magical properties? Besides, the magic krill is just one suggestion.
  13. I'm pretty sure we've moved past using dragons in the traditional fantasy sense. Perhaps something akin to a pterosaur? As far as scientific versus magical, might I suggest it could be both?
  14. Yeah, I was. I was originally thinking along the lines of diving iguanas, but I'm open to other suggestions.
  15. Sapient underground arachnid civilization sounds cool. As far as insectoid races go, ants are interesting, but might be a bit overdone. In keeping with the prehistoric theme, what about something based around Meganeura/dragonflies? Could put a unique spin on "fairies". EDIT: To clarify, I'm not talking about little people with dragonfly wings, I'm talking about a legit, flying race of sapient insects.
  16. This. All of this.I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments on the magic. I say we collaborate on the main races, and then delve into our own regions, sticking to those races as the basis for all civilization. I'd like to see a reptilian race, which would fit well with climate based on the Jurrasic petriod. Possibility semi-aquatic, but I'm open to suggestions. EDIT: Ooh, giant insects!
  17. I like the idea of taking a more scientific approach to "firebreathing". For example, "dragons" are basically dinosaurs, and rather than literally breathing fire, some species might spit caustic acid. I'm not opposed to fauna, and/or flora, accessing magic either, but I'd like the magic involved to be less arbitrary. Edit: Having the magic based around biology might be cool.
  18. I'm good with the idea magic is abundant, but more as something to interact with, more a part of the world, rather than a bunch of magic users. The fundamental mechanics of the magic should be agreed upon before we start creating our own veins and such. Different. What that entails, I don't care, I just don't want an Earth-clone. I'd be interested in a rocky desert region. Ooh, maybe a coastal desert? If we allow too many different races, I'm worried this thing will explode into chaos... Do we restrict the number of sentient races, implement a multiverse system, or just go for it and see what happens?
  19. I'm all for giving out spike-free cookies, but isn't it rather wasteful to go to all that trouble filling a metalmind just to throw it away? We might as well be giving them mundane jewelry and bracers. It's not like the Investiture matters to the recipient, they wouldn't even know the difference!
  20. Excellent! Let us know if you want any help getting things started.
  21. If no one has the answer, then Iron Eyes wins and asks another question. If he doesn't show up to ask a new question, someone else can ask one.
  22. I'd definitely be interested, assuming someone takes the initiative to get it started.
  23. I had my reply typed up, but then my tablet died... Let's try this again. Bahoduur- I forgot to mention this, but Arab was one of my first thoughts here as well. BaoShadhir- That works quite well, I'd keep this the same as well. Sirny- Hmm... Sirenus, Sirydus, Sirnys... I dunno. Gren- By that, do you mean that's what you were thinking, or you just like the idea? Mondreona- I think that works, actually. Dregoni- I can see that. I'm not sure why I thought Mongols, honestly. Arkam- That's fair, it does sound pretty awesome.
  24. Disclaimer: These opinions are based simply on the images these names evoke in my mimd, not on any actual linguistic analysis. This evokes images of an ancient Mesopotamia-esuqe civilization for me. A wealthy empire with a vaguely Asian culture. Siri? A primitive clan of intelligent humanoids. Not really sure, might come back to this. Mongol-esque, militaristic empire. Arkham Asylum?
  25. I'm tinkering with a magic system based on eye color, where you have different powers associated with the main six colors of visible light. I want to set up the genetics in such a way that these "magic" eye colors would only show up with specific combinations of the mundane eye color genes, so the genes could remain hidden for generations and suddenly pop up out of nowhere. You only get powers from the specific "magical" colors, so mundane blue or green eyes won't do anything. "Magical" eye color can be found in three possible combinations. One "magic" eye alongside one normal eye, two "magic" eyes of different colors, or the same "magic" color in both eyes. Having two distinct "magic" colors would give you access to both powers, while having both eyes the same grants you a lot more power and flexibility with that color.
