I'd actually start with a prebuilt deck, so you can get a sense for the game mechanics before delving into deckbuilding yourself. Once you've got a feel for the game, you can design a deck that you'll enjoy playing on any budget, really. I personally find it easier, cheaper, and more satisfying to build decks virtually, for the most part, and order the cards online, rather than buying fat packs and building from my own collection. NorthernWarlord on MTGVault has an excellent selection of budget decks he's built. Many of them are actually pretty competitive, and they're always a blast to play. He keeps them under $20 apiece. I'd take a look at them, and consider just copying one of the decklists into Card Kingdom or another online retailer to get you started. http://www.mtgvault.com/northernwarlord/ This deck in particular is straightforward, super cheap, and packs a punch: http://www.mtgvault.com/northernwarlord/decks/budget-decks-landfall-value/

I'm looking for some cool, unique ways to use the ability to amplify preexisting magnetic fields. Any suggestions?

Only some talent? I'm a rather proficient postcog myself, though I think people's names must be my weakness.

So looks like California's pretty easy. I personally prefer the method of injecting but Nevada presents a problem. Do we just blow the whole thing up? EDIT: I've submitted the question to What If. Any other tips in the meantime?

No magic, but any technology that currently exists or could feasibly be around within the next couple decades is fair game.

I wasn't sure of the best place to bring this question, so if there's a better thread please direct me there. This may initially seem strange, but bear with me. Trust me, the solution is of utmost importance. I need to determine the safest, most reliable method of synthesizing an earthquake that would cause California and Nevada to break off from the continent, roughly along state borders, thus giving Utah a beach. Thoughts?

Wow, nice catch! All this time of reading the name Threnody, and I never even considered it might be a word. I'm jumping on the Threnody as a Splintered Shard bandwagon. What else would have enough influence to name an entire planet after it?

That's what I'm wondering about. I'm referring to this quote, which I referenced earlier: Specifically that it says the Cognitive Realm DOES exist in planetary space. That seems in conflict with the other WoB, which talks about the distance between planets being smaller in Shadesmar, because all the extra space in between DOESN'T exist there. The only way I see to reconcile those two quotes is to assume that Shadesmar is different in this way than the rest of the Cognitive Realm, which still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
-
That's the quote I was thinking of. That's very interesting. I had thought of that quote as referring to the Cognitive Realm in general, but in the context of the one I referenced above, it's not quite so clear. Isn't Shadesmar just Roshar's portion of the Cognitive Realm? Why, then, would the distance be compressed from Roshar to Scadrial, but not from Scadrial to Roshar?

This has always been a tough question for me. On the one hand, as others have pointed out, Feruchemy is, in my opinion, vastly more practical in our world. Given the amount of time most of us spend sitting around, storing many of the physical attributes would be incredibly easy. Zinc, Steel, and Copprr are the biggest draws for me, but Pewter, Tin, Brass and Bronze are also super handy. So for utility, Feruchemy all the way. But Allomancy is just so.. cool! From an awesomeness standpoint, being Mistborn is hard to beat. Steel and Iron alone are practically worth it, and at that point Pewter, Tin, Zinc, Bendalloy, just seal the deal. Cause the thing is, at least in the mood I'm in right now, if I'm gonna have magic, I want it to be awesome, not just useful.

Either way, the point is that planets with life exist in the Cognitive Realm, but the space between is much smaller. So you use a Shardpool to enter the Cognitive Realm, walk from one planet to another, and use a Shardpool there to switch back. Here's a WoB, though not what I was thinking of. http://www.theoryland.com/intvsresults.php?kwt=%27cognitive%20realm%27(I'm on a tablet, so formatting is difficult.) EDIT: Wait, I misread that. "The Cognitive Realm DOES exist there". Huh...

Feel free to take whatever you like. Heck, if I like some of the changes you make, I might even borrow some back.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we've gotten confirmation that Worldhopping via the Cognitive Realm utilizes the fact that nothing exists in that Realm except where there're minds to perceive it. Empty distance between inhabited planets is compressed, allowing you to simply walk from one planet to another.

If you slice it up and leave it, weird things are bound to happen. And if it loses its head, it'll keep running around like a maniac for who knows how long. Kelsier is like a flat tire.

Ooh, I actually like that a lot! And you're right, Green doesn't fit with Gravity, but it works quite well with Elasticity. Thanks! EDIT: So, the first couple things that popped into my head when it comes to messing with objects's Elasticity were absorbing absorbing shock, turning your legs into massive springs, that kind of thing. And potentially decreasing Elasticity to make an object, (or a bone...), more brittle and breakable. Is this basically what you picturing? Any other interesting applications you thought of?

This is a magic system I've been playing around with for a year or so, but I still haven't settled on the final piece. It's all built around powers associated with each of the Primary and Secondary colors, but I still haven't decided what I want to do with the last color.

The Official Thread of Relationships
Lindel replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
Start by finding some common ground. If they really are a complete stranger, you can also introducing yourself, but keep any actual conversation based around the context of the situation. If you work together, or are in the same class, ask them about something related to that. Even if you already know the answer, asking them about something as simple as when an assignment is due can be a good way to break the ice. Keep in mind that none of this comes naturally to me either, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. But based on observing how others act around new people, I'd say the template above is a good starting point. After that, my plan would be to get more of a connection before asking them out, but others might just go for it right off the bat. -

Doylist motivations for Autonomy on Scadrial
Lindel replied to Necarion's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Do we have confirmation that Autonomy is the Shard that's messing with Scadrial, or is that still just the general assumption? -

So, I really like this girl, but I'm not sure if she feels the same way. She's seemed interested in the past, but I recently tried to flirt more obviously, and received mixed signals that tended toward disinterest. This left me discouraged, and I backed off. We're pretty good friends, and I certainly don't want any awkwardness to ruin that. I'd like to determine if there's a possibility that she might actually like me, without making the situation more awkward than it already is. Any suggestions? -
Thanks for the tips! I went ahead and sideboarded Blinding Flare, and I'm considering dropping a couple lands and adding Pyromancer Ascension. With my mana curve, I could probably afford to run as few as 20 lands, right? Eye of the Storm might not be competitive with this deck, but it'd certainly be fun.
