  1. With the hostages apparently out of the picture, we're probably using lethal weaponry. Antitank rifles should do the trick, maybe throw in some truck-mounted or shoulder-fired rocket launchers as well. The main issue in weighing our options is lack of intel. We have no idea what weaponry the Chargers have beyond what appear to be automatic firearms. Perhaps we combine the two? The primary assault being on the ground, with air support during the initial conflict. EDIT: So here's the general consensus: Send in a heavily armed strike team on foot. Begin the assault using EMPs and LRADs, and rockets, then close in with antitank rifles. If it becomes necessary, pull out and call in an airstrike.
  2. I'm not bored. Honestly, I feel personally invested in the scenario. I keep checking in to make sure some new catastrophe hasn't occurred that will threaten the future of mankind.
  3. Air strike sounds good to me at this point, unless Kyle actually picks up. Maybe send the diplomats to check things out, and then call one more time? I'm wondering if we might be able to learn something from the outside before we destroy the whole place. If we have enough time left.
  4. Any chance an electromagnetic pulse would disable their warp technology, assuming it exists?
  5. Do our satellites pick up any sign of the hostages leaving the barn? It appears they may have warp technology as we feared, and are using this to transport the hostages. I'm doubtful we'll learn much more from our small team if we can't get inside the barn. Clearly they're hiding something in there. They're not as certain of victory as they want us to believe. Why take hostages if we never stood a chance? EDIT: Fixed a spelling error.
  6. I can't find any useful synonyms for applause. Would the synonym you're looking for show up in a thesaurus? EDIT: I was thinking Gloryspren or something, but if it's an action... I got nothing. Synonyms for applause include "approval", "praise", "acclaim", "cheer". Synonyms for live? Subsist, exist, breathe, endure, last, survive. I survive on praise I survive on acclaim I exist because of praise... Still got nothing.
  7. I say we make the call, then proceed from there.
  8. We need to arm the reconnaissance team with something more than pistols, unless we've got our assault team on standy for emergency evac. Pistol's won't do crem against a Charger, unless they happen to posses far softer flesh and thinner skin than their Earthly cousins.
  9. Precisily. At which point our assault team moves in, secures the hostages, and searchs for any sign of warp technology.
  10. An LRAD, or a Long Range Accoustic Device, is sonic weapon that delivers painful sonic bursts across great distances. Slight adjustments to conventional LRADs should allow us to use these at a frequency that is below the human range of hearing, letting us severely hamper the Chargers without risking injuring any hostages. EDIT: It seems the majority are in favor Blaze's motion to deploy a small reconnasience team, establish contact and learn what we can. Meanwhile, a large assault team will be manuevered into place, armed with low-frequency LRADs, ready to move in on command.
  11. Chouta Connoisseur, we have made contact. You can find Kobold's compliation of the data from this source on page three. Wintercloud: Between Kobold's initial briefing on page one and the data collected on page three, you should be have as much information as the rest of us.
  12. I second Blaze's vote, although I suggest we get the assault team into position as soon as possible, waiting on call. If we confirm that the barn is housing warp technology, they should be ready to move in immediatly.
  13. It is indeed Jasnah.
  14. Depends on how many Chargers we're dealing with. Assuming each Charger can take on several men, we're probably talking a couple hundred to be safe. The main danger is going to be keeping the hostages safe. I assume we have access to basic hostage rescue equipment? Not sure how effective something like tear gas is going to be on the Chargers, though. Might we be able to use infrasound sonar equipment that would be debilitating to the Chargers, but on a low enough frequency to be inaudible to the human ear? Use that to distract and confuse the Chargers while we start getting the hostages out.
  15. If we're evacuating Naples, Florida, we're certainly not telling them the exact situation. We tell them it's an international emergency, that's it. However, the issue with starting evacs is that we honestly have no idea where they're going to strike. We're only guessing Naples, Florida because it's the nearest large city to Snowey. We don't have any reason to believe the Chargers need to appear near Snowey. Actually, that gave me a thought. If they've got warp capabilities... or perhaps some sort of transportation device... What if the machine we heard in the background is some sort of teleport? We could cut off the invasion completely by destroying that machine. If that's correct, of course. And if they're come by spacecraft, we can catch their ships in orbit. Here's my proposed course of action. We strike the barn where the Chargers are holding their captives ASAP. Ideally we end that conflict well before morning. If we determine that the Chargers are using transportation equipment of some kind located in Snowey, we bring in our troops and surround the town, meanwhile attempting to disable the machine. If they're not, we look to the skies and hope we didn't miss something. On the question of fallout, I believe most fallout particles are created in the cloud as the blast carries earth and rocks into the sky. From what I understand, the danger of fallout is significantly decreased if the warhead goes off midair, and should be negligible if it detonates in space.
  16. You claim to be morally superior to us, Smurf. Yet here you are suggesting we sit back and watch a city's entire population be slaughtered just to give us a tactical advantage? There will be resistance, whether we like it or not. People aren't going to just sit back and let themselves be killed. The Chargers will take that as an act of war, and they'll wipe out every single person in that city. We're past researching and debating. This is war. We won't win by observing. We win by gathering information while we have the time, and preparing to meet them as best we can. EDIT: I assume we've got access to nuclear war heads? If we see any sign of approaching War-herd spacecraft, I vote we take them down in orbit.
  17. We need to get the hostages out of Snowey. If this thing goes south, those hostages will be the first to answer for it. Surrendering to the Chargers is not an option. We will fight, but we will fight on our terms. We also need to determine where they're going to strike next. If the Chargers are extraterrestial in origin, we have no reason to believe they'll need to strike somewhere near Snowey. They may choose so, rather than spread their forces. If they're striking tomorrow, they're either already in the vicinity, or they've got warp capabilities. Have our telescopes picked anything that could indicate the approach of the War-herd?
  18. We don't have the data to answer these questions yet. Hopefully, if we establish contact, we'll be able to shed some light on these issues. In your proposed scenario, we lose all the hostages and potentially bring down retribution from the elephant's possible accomplices or allies. Not to mention an air raid would accomplish exactly the same result with less chance of the attack going terribly wrong. This will depend on whether the elephants have air support, of course.
  19. So we've decided to initiate contact by tapping the hostages' cell phones. What's our plan if the elephants don't understand any of languages we're capable of communicating in? What if they communicate primarily through low-frequency sounds which are outside the range of the human ear, similar to normal Earth elephants? If this is the case, which I'm beginning to suspect it will be, we'd need to set up infrasound arrays just to detect what they're saying, much less begin translating. This could get very complicated very quickly... Of course, it's possible the elephants aren't even sentient. They might be under the control of an entirely separate force that wishes to remain unseen, which could simplify things, but would also make our position much more precarious. The less we understand, the less we can accomplish.
  20. Can I join? I vote we attempt to establish communication through a simple robot, remotely controlled, which records both audio and video. In the event that these elephants don't speak an Earthly language, we can run the audio through our systems and see if it's possible to begin translating. If they destroy the robot, I'd take that as an act of war, and we can initiate military action. When you say hairless, I assume you mean lacking the thick fur of prehistoric mammoths, but they still share the bristly hairs of African or Asian elephants?
  21. I assume I can from laptop as well?
  22. Storm it. I had this whole post typed up about my thoughts on harmonium as an Allomantic catalyst and the importance of metals in the Cosmere as a whole, but I accidentally reloaded the page and lost the whole thing.
  23. Welcome to the forum! Skybreakers or Windrunners for me, cause who doesn't want to fly? Or Dustbringers, because Abrasion would be pretty cool. Plus setting things on fire.
  24. That's a shame. Gleeman, what you listed was ten examples of a single formal fallacy, Affirming the Consequent, which basically goes, "If P, then Q. Q, therefore P." What Kasmir was looking for were ten distinct formal fallacies. To be fair, I probably couldn't have gotten that question myself. I could name dozens of informal fallacies, but only a handful of formal fallacies. My favorite fallacy is the Fallacy Fallacy, Argument from Fallacy, which assumes that any argument that contains a fallacy must be false. It's like a meta-fallacy!
