Agreed. And from a purely user UI standpoint you could work in other interface options. Assuming the VR is using hand motion trackers like the occulus has, you could incorporate button holds to mimic some of the modifier options. You could also have an offline Aon-Builder that lets you pre-program some of the modifier options, where you put in the design work in an Aon workshop or something, and then when you draw the aon while holding a given button, you get the modified version rather than the basic default.
-
That was my thought as well. For a game you'd likely have to force it were the Aons were huge to work so the exaggerated gestures could hide the inaccuracies. I know I cant free-hand a circle with any level of accuracy. The closest thing Ive tried was the Harry Potter world at Universal Studios where they had IR tracking cameras set up to take wand gesture commands, and those things were janky as all get-out even with a budget that could also afford a dragon fireball every 20 minutes.

Gravitation would be so many kinds of awesome for VR, being able to just reset your Down direction and use it for mobility, with a allomantic Steel and Iron being close seconds. Drawing Aons in the air for tangible effects would be really cool if very complex to code and require a lot of gesture precision. Most other cosmere powers would be awesome in a video game setting in general, but those are the ones that I think would specifically benefit from VR.

Cool. So, Renarin agrees with you, that it's one giant Fabrial. It certainly has Teleportation aspects to it, given that it's the hub of the Oathgates, but it also has a bunch of life support to run the city itself at the very least, and it's generally believed to have all kinds of other fun functions. I personally doubt it literally moves, given how much it's described as being integrated into the Mountainside and carved from the stone, etc. I suspect the reason it was always treated/drawn as being close to the capitals of those nations is due to the Oathgates when they were active, since by travel time (if not by geography) it's close to all of them at the same time. I see three possibilities offhand: They just have to occasional highstorm of that reaches the top, even if most dont, so over the centuries it get a little exposure, whcih would explain why its present but so much less actual accumulation than at ground level. Might not even be actual highstorms so much as just highstorm wind and mist that got up there and carried tiny amounts of crem. It's other junk that got crammed in there and wedged the door closed that was crem-like to Dalinar but is not literal Highstorm crem It accumulated through some completely different supernatural mechanism, possibly relating to Urithiru's status as a super-fabrial. Crem is not actually understood, but is invested and supernatural, and is (in a really vague way) something like Shard poop. It's the magical mechanism that keeps the continent in it's fractal shape and prevents it from washing away.

A case for atium and lerasium on a post-Catacendre Scadrial
Quantus replied to Staenbridge's topic in Mistborn
That's an interesting line of thought. He can certainly just go in and tweak the Scadrian's spiritwebs, as both side of their Creator he is more connected to them than even other shards like Endowment. And he would certainly be Connected to any mistborn enough to fiddle as he chooses. But Im actually curious how hard it would be to completely erase the Mists. The mists, just like the shardpools or Ruin's Atium are sound like they are pretty fundamental to the shard's status as being Invested in their resident planet, and I get the sense that the Investiture needs to go Somewhere. Preservation had a little lerasium and a lot of Mists, while Ruin had the Atium pits (the production of which was ultimately a trap). If he were to entirely withdraw the mists, I suspect his Investiture would need some other physical manifestation. That might be as simple as a larger Shardpool that handles it all, or a boatload more Harmonium naturally growing (however that's happening these days). -
Fair point. At that point though I dont know if the Shard is manipulating you or if they are manipulating the Spiritual Realm and its Platonic Ideal itself.
-
I see them as basically the same things, in this context, just with different Vectors. Good Luck = moving towards that Destiny, towards a future that better aligns with a global/universal Platonic Ideal (a "Perfect" world) while Bad Luck/ Reduced Fortune is going to leave you more rudderless and prone to going off course. So Bad Luck wouldnt be an active force in it's own right, but reducing the normal level of Fortune aspect that a person has (using the Feruchemy model) would make your future "destiny" far easier to manifest in a detrimental way.

A case for atium and lerasium on a post-Catacendre Scadrial
Quantus replied to Staenbridge's topic in Mistborn
From a purely Doylistic standpoint, I think the biggest indicator that we'll see Lerasium return at some point is the simply fact that it's supposed "true Purpose" never became relevant and he continues to reserve most questions realting to it for RAFO. I do think there remains a possibility that by the time Era4 rolls around, there will be skilled enough realmic scholars and Investiture Engineers that they might be able to manufacture Lerasium without Preservation/Harmony's personal intervention. We know it's technically possible to distill it from the Mists directly, and that it's possible (if difficult) to transform one form of Investiture into a completely different one, per that WOB that you could actually manufacture Breaths from Stormlight if you knew what you were doing. All that to say the re-emergence of Lerasium could be entirely independent of the Shard Vessel's will (whomever holds it by then). By era 4 we are expecting much more worldhopping and cultural crossover, which so very often leads to War, and I could easily see a sort of Manhattan Project trying to re-make Lerasium to unlock some unique (and powerful) Spiritweb modification capabilities. -
I would assume it was simply mined like any other metal. It's naturally present on many of the worlds, just like Scadrial. Though since we know the 5 Scholars went world-hopping before Nightblood was created, they could have gotten it off-world as well. It's rare, but not unheard of, for Aluminum to exist in it's elemental form, but there are also a number of chemical processes that would let them extract it from the various ores and gems. Even on Roshar where it's said to be available only via soulcasting or meteors, that cant actually be true because there are naturally occurring aluminum-based gems.

Im curious if it's a qualitative difference, or if he's just stuck at a reduced Fortune the way somebody would be while filling their chromium metalminds. Feruchemy theoretically has the same sort of increased/decreased slider-bar on their Fortune stat, perhaps the Curse of Kind just got the Saih Amians just stuck that way. Which would then beg the question of where their normal level of fortune Investiture is going? Is it the Curse of Kind because his "kind", his people, somehow used it all up once upon a time and are retroactively paying the bill? Are they trading Fortune for Immortality (ie Chromium style Investiture in, Atium style out)?

Ashyn had it's own magics that were based on the same fundamental Surges, but were not the same application as what the modern Radiants do. What the modern Radiants do was the result of the Spren copying the Heralds and forming Bonds similar to what the Heralds had with Honor and/or their Honorblades. Another example of Surgebinding that is not Radiant Surgebinding would be fabrial tech, that is a different application of (and method of accessing) the same Fundamental Surges.

Definitely not any Skimmer, since they have the normal limitations on how much they can store at any given time, and limited lifespans, etc. A true Twinborn Iron Compounder might have a better shot, especially if they team up with a Nicroburst. There are still quantifiable limitations to how much can be stored in a given sample of metal for both Feruchemy and Hemalurgy, so I dont know where the numbers would actually fall out, or how close to the full Black-hole critical mass a human body could reach before it dies and cant perform the magic anymore, dissipating the effect. By Era4 I wouldnt be surprised to see that somebody will have tried to pull something like it off with the more Mechanical Allomancy we're supposed to get.

Speculation about era three and four metallic arts rarity
Quantus replied to Hoidlovesbacon's topic in Mistborn
As @Karger mentioned, the dilution has reached it's maximum, but specifically on the norther continent, so establishing contact with the Southern Continent bloodlines may well have an effect. They will be finding mechanical ways around the dilution issues too. People are getting weaker, but by the same virtue Ferrings are theoretically becoming more common since there will be less and less Terris isolation. There's also the possibility that increased availability of Medallions will cause a resurgence since use of investiture warps the spiritweb (ie Savant mechanics) that might sort of re-seed some bloodlines that use/overuse medallions. The biggest wildcard to my mind is how much Hemalurgy is going to play a role, which I think is going to be more of a cultural question than anything.- 21 replies

I think it becomes all about the leaking smoke, and the idea (mentioned in the WOB) that the swords form isnt really important. So I dont think the sheath is actually gaining investiture, but while it's on Nightblood it's sort of being incorporated into the whole weapon/beast/entity. Once its entirely removed it just becomes a big aluminum tube that once again a separate object that can block him. Put another way, I think while it on him it's part of his Bead (or whatever Cognitive form he takes) but once removed it becomes separate again.

If the sheath were separated from him, it should work since it's not pre-invested. But while on him it's kind of part of the whole, and can be deadly all on it's own:

To further complicate things, there are some contradictor WOB's on them. One says that for Kandra purposes any pointy peice of Invested metal would work, while quite a few others say that they are very a unique type of Hemalurgic spike that only the Lord Ruler knew how to make.
-
From what I recall they are always described as seeming unnatural, and I want to say there was some version of them at several of the fractal oathgate silver cities. The fact that they have the same three-color strata that Urithiru does makes me think they are formed by a similarly magical process, whatever that may be.
-
Is it actually known that Kelsier held the Preservation shard briefly? I though all his veneration came from being so publically killed and then having a Kandra run around impersonating him, giving him a resurrection tale.

Pathians have Missionaries but no formal clergy, since they discourage formalized worship. But I assume there will be some back and forth with all aspect of the two cultures, including religion. How much foothold each gets in the other will depend a lot on circumstances. I am interested to see what might happen when the South starts to have sightings of Marsh (assuming he hasnt visited them regularly before)

Might Odium think that the Sibling is dead?
Quantus replied to Ripheus23's topic in Stormlight Archive
I meant literally dead more as in permanently Shattered/Destroyed, whereas Dead-eyes still walk around (in shadesmar) and interact and frm Bonds and whatnot. And the Stormfather presumably used the terms "slumbering" for a reason. Since there was a Bondsmith active around the time of the Recreance, my best guess is that said Bondsmith was bonded to The Sibling and that his Slumbering state is more equivalent to deadeyes. -
Might Odium think that the Sibling is dead?
Quantus replied to Ripheus23's topic in Stormlight Archive
I dont think so, personally. As a Shard that exists mostly in the Spiritual Realm, and a guy that made pseudo-spren Fused from ordinary people, he should have the vantage to be able to know all about the practical differences between the Sibling Slumbering vs Dead, and all about the Deadeye state (assuming that's more or less what the Sibling is stuck in). And I really dont think the Uniting the Realm ability of dalinar is going to involve all three Godspren, since I lean heavily toward the theory that it's only possible because of the way the Stormfather has Merged with Tanavast's cognitive shadow. I think I would argue that the Stormfather is more associated with the physical realm since he represents a Physical Phenomena (the Highstorm) while the Nightwatcher is more Spiritual since her Old Magic seems to mostly boil down to direct Spiritweb manipulation. -
We know there was some debate on where to put the Radiant's headquarters, with a block wanting to place it in Alethela/Alethkar, so I think it's safe to say it was after the initial Herald emergence (which was the first generation after the migration). There is a lot of speculation and evidence that the Sibling is directly connected to it, and reasonable theories that it requires that level of spren to operate all it's systems. Given the fractal nature of both Urithiru and the main Silver Kingdom cities that have Oathgates, I think it's reasonable to think they were made with similar processes. One Ive seen was that it used some sort of super-enhanced Lightweaving that propagated the design out in waves combined with a Soulcasting effect. My more fringe theory is that that Sibling is something akin to a massive Cryptic, and is the Spirit of the Continent itself (which is itself a supernaturally created Julia set fractal), in the same way the Stormfather is the Spirit of the Highstorm. I think they went with the location they did because it's just about the exact center of the continent, and maaaybe (havent done the research) might be the true center of the fractal, mathematically speaking. If true, it would mean that the rest of the continent radiates out from that location, making it ideal for interfacing with the God-spren of the Continent (assuming again that is what the Sibling actually is). Now, if Im right about the Sibling being a Cryptic of the Contitent, that might imply that the other Silver Cities are or were similarly large (but not God-spren large) sleeping fractal Spren, and the shape on the landscape similar to how Pattern causes ripples in his form when he merges with a surface rather than being a floating entity.

It's technically possible, though through realmic/magical means more than any physical process, in that it's a completely different atom as oppsoed to an alloy of the two or anything like that. Im not sure if that means it's any different or easier than how it's technically possible to convert entirely different Investitures, like turning Stormlight into actual Breaths that can be used for Awakening, or even how you can technically convert Mists to Lerasium if you know how.
