Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Rule Clarifications: 1. What is the order of actions/the Stack like? Roughly speaking: Defensive Actions -> Offensive Actions -> Ingesting Lerasium etc -> Giving Items -> Exploring. 2. Can someone have two Roles? "Strictly speaking, only Eliminators have Roles. It is possible for someone to be an Eliminator and have an Inherent Ability, though." Just to make it clear: in previous games, you might think of stuff like Coinshot or Mistborn as a role. For the purposes of this game, if there were to be such a thing as a Coinshot or a Mistborn, that would be an Inherent Ability, not a Role. And yes, that can stack with having an Eliminator Role. 3. Is it one Action per Cycle, or one Action per Turn? You have one Action per Cycle. Recall: voting is a free Action does not count as an Action. 4. When a player is protected by someone, are they informed who protected them? No. They are not. 5. Do some kills enjoy priority over others? No. All kills are considered to have happened at the same time. 6. Can an item be gifted and used on the same Night? e.g. Assassin gives STINK a knife and STINK uses it to kill Elenion. No. "Almost every item takes effect before being gifted occurs." [Late, I know >> ]- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Rule Clarifications: 1. Can Traitors still Explore? Why yes. Yes, they can. 2. Can the Heart of the House be discovered in the same Turn an Eliminator is killed? Yes, since kills precede exploration. 3. Can I give another player an item? Yes, and doing so takes up an Action. You may also only give one player one item per Action. (So, for instance, if Assassin in Burgundy has a [Brittle] Knife and Lerasium and he wants to give STINK the [Brittle] Knife in a way that doesn't involve poking it through his gut, he has to spend one action giving STINK the [Brittle] Knife; the Lerasium goes over the next Night.)- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Two reminders: 1. Do not copy and paste from your GM PM (or any other PM.) I shouldn't have to say this, but this includes manually typing out anything a GM might have sent you. If it's not already obvious, this rule is not because we're technophobes. This rule is not because we hate you and want to make life difficult for you by forcing you to type things out manually. This rule is because a huge part of this game is about deception. Drawing on GM (or sub-GM!) authority to affirm your truthfulness eliminates a significant tool both players and Eliminators have in their kit: deceiving another player.(Ditto for copying and pasting what other players say.) I will say this again: you are not allowed to copy and paste from PMs, and this includes typing it out letter by letter. You are only allowed to summarise or otherwise present the information in your own words. 2. This is in a similar vein to the first reminder. You're enjoying the ability to PM freely at night. That's fine. Sometimes, you have things you want to clarify with the GM that pertains to personal information you have. Do not ask the GM (or sub-GM) for clarification in a joint PM. Such requests for clarification anywhere but your personal PM will be ignored. This is because it breaks the same principle as the first reminder: a GM answer in your joint PM confirms your truthfulness (or lack thereof.) To be clear: clarifications that everyone will have access to will be replied to both in the joint PM and as part of the clarifications in the thread. (e.g. "Can we create group PMs at night?") Clarifications that refer to messages you have personally received from the GM, such as "Wyrm, you said I was an Explorer, right?" or "Wyrm, I found books and gained a Cynic role - can I use this to block all attempts to convert me?"--that are asked in an inappropriate place--will be duly ignored. Thank you, and here's to avoiding such situations in future.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Feh, I'm not always going to get up at / stay up until 5AM, just to make sure rule clarifications go in early [Edited to add: as penance, can you link this post in your quick links so people can access the Rule Clarifications for the cycle relatively easily? Thanks!] Reasonably Late Rule Clarifications: 1. Can dead players PM other dead players about LG28? What about if living players PM dead players about the game, and dead players just remain silent? Neither is permitted. As you may recall, the rules explicitly state that "Players who die can only discuss the game with each other in the doc. Please do not discuss with anyone else." This goes for communication with the living - even if the dead player ostensibly remains silent. Please do not PM each other. Thank you. 2. What happens to the items of slain players? The House nom-noms reclaims them. No one gets to hang on to them. Easy come, easy go... 3. Can I PM people? Yes. It's the Night cycle. You can PM one person or more people. Just remember to add Wyrm and myself to those PMs and that those PMs must shut down once the Day is here.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
As you can tell from Ned Stark (and this post on the forum), Ookla season is upon us. A bunch of you have already changed your names, and that's fine--feel free to join in the festivities! Of course, this puts your GM and sub-GM in a slightly awkward position when accepting actions (less so, since your PMs are labelled) but especially so when counting votes (whether votes you are placing) or the targets of votes. (This is especially a big deal when some people also change their member titles, sigs, and avatars to go with the name!) To make things easier on us all and to decrease the chances we'll make a mistake when doing vote tallies for the lynch (!), please indicate your usual name/character name and the usual name/character name of the person you're placing a vote on. (In other words, carry on doing what you're doing now - just please do not vote for Ookla.) Thanks! e.g. Wilson, now Ookla the Inimitable, wants to vote for Elenion, now Ookla the Unpredictable. So whether through blue-text or through RP, Wilson would indicate that she is Khaos/Wilson, and that she is placing a vote on Elenion/ "The Hammer". [Bolded words mine, and no, this does not constitute a sub-GM vote on Elenion. tldr; just make sure we can identify who you are and who your target is - not Ookla. Carry on!]- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Rule Clarifications: 1. If I'm roleblocked, will I still be told I found nothing? If you're role-blocked, you will be informed. 2. Do people who discover Omens get explicitly informed of this in their results? i.e. "You found an Omen: <description.>" The results PM does not explicitly tell you it is an Omen. 3. Is it possible for more than two Omens to be found in a single Night? It is possible, depending on the dice, that more than two Omens can be found - It's just very unlikely. [Incidentally, it's also possible that your keyboard will tunnel through the table, just very, very, very, very, very, very, very unlik--hey, Chief, why're you scowling at me like that?] 4. Can I send in orders in advance so I don't forget to place them? "I'm afraid I don't allow advance orders like this, as it can provide a false impression of activity."- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Can confirm they don't. It's really awkward in the doc, btw, what with them being referred to by Omen and you can just tell they're dying to hook up and let each other know who they are so Wyrm and I have to keep a constant eye on them to make sure they behave. It's like dealing with teenage dating, I swear... AHEM. LISTEN TO EL.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Rule Clarifications: 1. Is there a Traitor Doc? Or are the Traitors (if any) simply drifting around aimlessly hoping to hook up with each other? As El has pointed out, the rules state that "When an Omen is discovered, a player has their will subverted by the House, gains a Role and access to the Traitor doc, and their Alignment changes to ‘Traitor’." Interpret accordingly. 2. Am I allowed to lie to everyone and say I found something I didn't? Yeah, sure, knock yourself out--the GM and Sub-GM will neither confirm nor deny whether: A. an item actually exists, and B. whether the claiming player actually has that item, so go ahead...and here's a bucket of water for those pants! 3. Does it take an Action to give someone an item? Yeah, it does.- 980 replies

1. I don't know if this is quite the place for this either, but we did speak of this privately, and I thought it was well-worth adding the same clarifications we mentioned. I left this community some time ago, so obviously my comments are a little dated, but perhaps it also gives me a bit of perspective, since I'm a stranger returning to somewhere foreign. It's well-worth distinguishing between several types of phenomena that we lump under inactivity: The points I am trying to make are as follows. Inactivity appears differently as a problem for a GM as opposed to for a player. On the player side, there are variants of inactivity that end up being really problematic for the village, if not outright frustrating for their teammates. On the GM side, some kinds of inactivity are really not problematic. And others, we try to counter with compelling game design, or at least to mitigate with inactivity filters (which my experience with MR7 has, at least, led me to endorse. I think that's an interesting case because it was one where people were signing out midgame. I had extremely high activity near the beginning but as the game dragged out, people got bored, and I started haemorrhaging players.) I think some of the other cases become legitimate worries of individual playstyle versus communal norms. I don't think that's an easy issue to resolve :/ And finally, I think low-activity should not be conflated with any of the above cases, because while we could very well say it was a mistake--akrasia, weakness of will, etcetera--for players to sign up for a game they have little time for, I honestly think that's just being a bit excessive: it treats activity as a completely binary thing--all in or all out. You shouldn't need to be completely all over the board/thread to be 'active'. A more nuanced position to hold is to a basic minimum of activity, pegged to the kind of game. 1-2 quality posts, daily, for a QF is not optimal or ideal. But it's trying. [But we both already agreed on this; I just wanted to point out the distinction here.] 2. I honestly think 'breaktank' games are a really good idea. I think the problem with running simulations as a GM (I'm using MR7 once again because it's the only one I've had experience with, from the GMing end) is that there's a limit to what you can predict, in terms of how mechanics interact with each other, or in terms of what players will do. All the test cases I tried had a limitation, because it was a role madness game. And I don't think any amount of personal wargaming would have helped me realise that the game could be easily broken if everyone ganged up on Discovery and decided to go Mega-Faction. All the scenarios I had in mind simply assumed Faction feuding since the win con was that way. So I think it would have immensely helped my broken game if I had a chance to run it for 3-4 cycles with actual players, just to see what they'd do. The usual stuff about how things break unexpected in the real world, and so on. This especially goes for if you have lots of roles and mechanics and are just not sure of how they might interact.

1. One Omen, one Eliminator only >> Do you want more? 2. Why can't you find nothing when exploring? Certainly, nothing must be something enough, if you can find nothing (But of course, if nothing is something, does that mean it's still nothing?) Edit: Whoops, ninjaed.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Rule Clarifications: 1. Can I send PMs at night? "Yes, you can. Though I'd still like myself and Kas to be included so we can be sure they're shutting down during the Day." 2. If there are neutrals in this game, would they be explicitly told they are neutral? "If there are Neutrals in this game, they would be specifically told that they are Neutral, yes." Furthermore, Village alignments will be indicated by use of green in your PM. 3. Is voting an Action? (i.e. If I vote during the day, does this mean I can't do anything at all, including explore at night?) Voting is not an action. Voting in the day does not affect your ability to explore at night, or to get up to whatever kind of shenanigans you do. 4. The rules say there is no kill on Night 1. But this is Night 0. So how does this work? Did the Almighty Wyrm make a mistake? The sub-GM reserves comment on whether he is required to endorse the doctrine of Wyrmian infallibility. However, what that rule should be interpreted to mean is that there will be no kill this night. [=no kill on the starting night. Well, except for me, I guess. Y u do dis bro D: ] 5. What happened to Kas? I'm sub-GMing, under Wyrm. (Which, by the way, means that if a conflict between Word of Wyrm and Word of Kas comes up, go for Word of Wyrm. I'm just helping him keep an eye on things, and running them according to his words.) The sign-up and kill was just for narrative flavour. 6. Do we know when there is an Eliminator? "Omens will be noted in the write-up when found, which will hint towards the Eliminator role that is now in play." 7. Can we send group PMs? Sigh. Yes, yes, you may. *mutters* RIP inbox... 8. Can more than one Omen be discovered in the same Night Turn? Yes. 9. Does exploring potentially give me new roles, abilities, and alignments other than turning me into an Eliminator? Yes. 10. While exploring, can I bump into another player and see what they're doing? No. 11. Does exploring have any other hidden benefits besides what it says in the rules? No, Dora. No. 12. To send in an "Explore" order, do I have to be ridiculously specific, e.g. "I'm exploring the Breakfast Room!" No, you don't have to, but it would be awfully helpful just in case - oh, just in case you die, for instance. That way we know where your body shows up...if it doesn't get eaten or something 13. Will every question about the rules I asked get reflected here? Yes. Wyrm and I share the policy that rule clarifications should be made available to all players, and no player should be having privileged access to information simply in virtue of having asked in a PM or in a doc. While the questions have obviously been anonymised, we will endeavour to make sure everyone is on the same page, as far as the rules are concerned.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Kasimir replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
You know what? Okay, this looks too cool to miss. I'm going to sign up as Kasther, intrepid explorer extraordinaire, and freelancer for the Hallendran Real Estate Agency! - Kasther clicked open his pocketwatch and consulted it, waiting by the sign. Plenty of time, all things considered; it was Heron-made, from an age where those things such as punctuality and craftsmanship and reliability still mattered, and it'd stood up years of travel and abuse with a stolidness that made Kasther consider it fondly. "What's this?" asked a passer-by, having come up cautiously to where Kasther had set up. Colourful cloth drapes fluttered in the breeze, and his handwritten paper sign threatened to fall off completely, so he straightened it out again. Kasther brightened up with a smile. "This, my good lady, is the one and only Grand Opening of the House on the Hill!" He let his voice drop to a mesmerising whisper. "Never mind all those unfounded rumours about the owner, the shrieks at night--the Hallendran Real Estate Agency is a respectable organisation, and we have decided to open this house up for sale! Certainly, it's a little dusty, and--" With a rotten sigh, part of the wooden boards patching up the rusted iron fence gave way; collapsing to the ground with a forlorn crash. "--Are you sure it's even safe?" asked the passer-by, dubiously. Kasther's high-wattage smile never faltered. "Why, of course it is! I'm a certified explorer and agent for the Hallendran Real Estate Agency, and good lady, we assure you that while the House," and here, he could not help glancing back, at the House looming like a forgotten menace, a dark lonely shape on the hill behind, "Appears to be in desrepair, it will be easily remedied. And the grand library is simply stunning! A perfect display of architecture from the very days of the Manywar!" "Right," the passer-by said, weakly, edging away. "Good luck with that." Kasther raised his voice so the gathering crowd of onlookers could hear him. "Come one, come all! Don't miss the opening--and yes, the free grand tour of the House on the Hill, offered by none other than yours truly! Marvel at the quality of the silverware! Admire the portraits; painted, it is said, by an artisan as an offering to Dawnfire the Magnificent!"- 980 replies

That was awesome Thanks for GMing this, Chief - I enjoyed playing it, even though I had to bow out early due to RL, and never got to finish some of the character arcs I'd planned for the Herons. As a brief addendum/coda to Wilson's thing with the spies, I did in fact wind up discovering a Uethorn spy in my own House. As that particular Heron I was playing was practically a sociopath, and also pretty Machiavellian, her instinctive, in-character response? Publicly execute the spy. It was especially a big deal because the skaa rebellion was ongoing and the last thing she wanted was for any of the Heron skaa to think it was okay to turn traitor. Still, that went down so badly with Unodus it was kind of funny, in retrospect. But there you have it.
