  2. Is anyone else concerned about Boyega's character getting Anakin's lightsaber? I mean, think about it. That piece of junk is cursed. Everyone who's ever wielded it has gotten their hand chopped off!
  3. "Well, here we are," Asim said, to Katien. The shaggy mountain horse nickered--almost wearily, Asim thought--in response. It had been a long, hard journey to Duladel, through the mountain passes, clogged as snow as they were. At points, he'd almost questioned the sanity of his decision to walk away from that trading outpost. But he'd persevered, nonetheless. There was no turning back: it might've meant death, just as going forward did. So he went forward. He was utterly starving, and Katien's hide was no longer glossy, but matted and he could count the ribs beneath. He figured he wasn't in much better shape either, with snow crusted on the thick furs he wore, and his stomach a constant gnawing pit, but he was still alive, breath issuing forth in white clouds, and that was what mattered. Only the living, after all, could enjoy the moment, staring out at the glittering jewel of Duladel below, and to know he'd made it through the blocked passes alive, no matter how suicidal such a gesture had been. He heard a voice whistle a tune, and reached warily for the knife hidden in an underarm sheath. The last thing he needed was more trouble, for who else would brave a blocked mountain pass? "Hello," said a man. He was tall; dark-haired, with a single pale eye, and carried a travelling bundle tied--incongrously--to his spear, which he slung over a shoulder as though it were a pole. "I didn't expect to see a fellow traveller braving the winter snows to reach Duladel." "Yes," Asim said, falling back into the disguise of a courier, like an set of old, worn clothing. "The passes are simply terrible in winter, aren't they?" "You don't say," the traveller said. "I came across a trading outpost a few days back. I'd give it a wide berth, if you're swinging back through the passes to Arelon." Asim considered it. "Why?" (For a courier would've asked, he thought.) "What news, then?" "Death," said the traveller. "Much death, and slaughter. And sacrifice. Don't go near the outpost if you wish to live. It was cold enough that the decay had slowed, but I could see the shape of bodies in the snow, and from the outpost itself, not a sign of life." "Thank you for the word," Asim said. "And I presume you are also heading down to Duladel?" He was not particularly surprised to find himself talking to thin air. Men, Asim wisely concluded, went a little kayana in the snows. But what remained, even as he picked his way down carefully towards hot food, a warm bed, and all the accompanying comforts of civilisation was the conviction that he had made the right decision to press on. Never get involved in their games, he told himself. It was the first--and most important--of his rules. To do so is to die. And Asim had every intention of living. Congrats to the Eliminators! Meta, I do believe you've put the fear of you into a bunch of other people now
  4. Besides, we're not a vicious, cut-throat bunch, not like those Sanderson Elimination people... It's more about having fun, whatever works for you individually, and personally, I've given up on metrics or any idea of 'competing' with the other players and am just muddling along and RPing all the things. So I wouldn't really say (from a player's perspective) that you're quite at any sort of disadvantage...and the gap does narrow down with time. Took me about 1-2 Gens to get stable, since I started a Gen later.

  7. No kidding... I have studied some but only lower-level metaphysics, and very specific topics within it (e.g. metaphysics of personal identity, natural kinds, social kinds.) So I would not be qualified to address such questions.
  8. Yer must be confused, matey, for I've seen 'im with me own eyes!
  9. Arr! I like yer answer, matey, but it wouldn't have counted For context, here's the course syllabus, yer scurvy dogs: It's one of those things which looks really undoable at first sight and to anyone who hasn't spent a semester studying metaphysics, but then you realise that the two questions map really well onto the course syllabus. In other words, they're standard regurgitation questions: the student is invited to more or less go over one or two of the main debates learned for each course area, and after they've laid down/regurgitated the basics, they can build on it, offer some objections to traditional views, or their own perspective

  11. Arr, ye impudent scurvy dog, I be 'thar' Piratical', not 'thar' Ineffable' or 'thar' Mysterious' or 'thar' Unguessable'. We pirates be easily identifiable, y'know? That's so ye can see us comin' from a thousand miles off, on a good day with a stiff breeze an' know to drop anchor and strike yer colours!
  12. Appropriate meme is appropriate.
  13. I just wanted to share this glorious gem from my university's metaphysics exam (today) which has gone viral: Enjoy the gloriousness, everyone. Also, the answer is probably not 42 Edit: I would note that although I'm in my final year, I would have difficulty addressing these questions because they're so specific, and they're not in my area of expertise. Just look and laugh
  14. Joining the excerpt bandwagon, then. This is from a NaNo a few years back--should be 2012, I think. Set in the Dragon Age universe.
  15. "...They are heroes not in spite of the fear and horror their actions inspire, but in some ways because of them. They are not so much men who right wrongs, but avengers, and exerters of power; their appeal is not that of agents of justice, but of men who prove that even the poor and weak can be terrible." --Bandits of the Sea, C. R. Pennell

  16. Jocasta Heron #1: A Knife in the Dark Jocasta Heron #2: A Spy in the House Jocasta Heron #3: The Purging of Tremredare If it's not already apparent, I'm playing a Heron who happens to be a major hardliner. This does not generally affect Heron's commitment to neutrality; however, neutrality does not, as Jocasta would say, entail weakness. It does not entail laxity in defending our interests, particularly when these interests are compromised. I am disappointed to discover a spy within House Heron. However, the matter has been dealt with to my satisfaction, and I will not further pursue it. I'll get back to nice, huggy and cuddling actions by next Generation. Maybe
  17. Necessary caveat is that I'm not a Rawls specialist and we only did AToJ, so he's changed his views quite a bit since that text. My impression is that the main pressure is less about whether a multi-religious society ought to be included under considering "comprehensive doctrine" or whether they're actually smuggled in under Rawls's not-very-well elaborated concept of 'representative men.' Representative men seem to play a key role in how we consider distribution, and yet they mostly seem to map over onto social class. But why should that be the case? Why should we not consider race or culture or gender with respect to representative men?
  18. Congrats, Winter!

  20. Roger that, 1337 Commander. Sounds like a plan to me.

      My sentiments exactly.

  22. To be honest, I just don't feel comfortable teaching students when my grasp of that particular subject matter is so poor. In comparison, I'd be happy to teach another area I don't specialise in, like analytic metaphysics, because I have a better grasp on the material than I do multi-value logic. I feel like you need a certain basic level of proficiency before you teach something as important as logic. Also, I missed the reference, I'm sad to say...
  23. NaNoWriMo: Won. Now, time to see if I can push that word count even higher... Still, it's good to see I still have what it takes to win NaNo, since I had to drop out last year due to health issues flaring up...
