That's an excellent recap and analysis! I like the conclusion to the two-part opener as well, if not as much. Even if we haven't seen the other members of the Mane 6 exhibit the attribute of their Element except on their journey in ep 2, it sets you up to look for these characteristics in each of them throughout the rest of the series. To piggyback off your Rarity comment, she really is a generous pony. She struggles with it from time to time (I think of the episodes with Fluttershy modeling and the one where she's supposed to be making Twilight's birthday outfit), but that only makes it more noteworthy about Rarity when she exhibits generosity. When given a tough choice, she can and will force herself to make the best one regarding her friends (eventually). It's more about the struggle to exemplify generosity. It's not about the characters finding it natural to do so. That would make for a boring show. I love how MLP:FiM can teach these great lessons in a half hour of air time. I'm going to let a C.S. Lewis quote sum up my feelings on this phenomenon: "The Fantastic or Mythical is a Mode available at all ages for some readers; for others, at none. At all ages, if it is well used by the authors and meets the right reader, it has the same power: to generalize while remaining concrete, to present in palpable form not concepts or even experiences but whole classes of experience, and to throw off irrelevancies. But at its best it can do more; it can give us experiences we have never had and thus, instead of 'commenting on life,' can add to it..." - C.L. Lewis from Essay: Fairy Stories I would only add that by adding to life, it also prepares us for moments that fall into that greater class of experiences he mentions. The story is an opportunity to think about decisions you haven't faced yet and gives you time you wouldn't otherwise have to preparation to make good decisions.
