Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!

That's exactly what this thread is for! Edit: By the way, how's the eye? -
I hate to undermine the whole eternal foes thing (especially since it's espoused by a member of the Herd), particularly the origin of the rivalry, but I have a really yummy muffin recipe that actually calls for maple syrup...

I'm about a third of the way through Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe. I've never read anything by him, but a friend also had him recommended to her, so she passed along the rec. The reason I started with this one is that there is a very cool second hand book store called 2nd & Charles that has a location near where this friend lives. As we were browsing the shelves, she reminded me that I should read his stuff some time, but they didn't have the first book of the trilogy she first recommended, so she helped me find a standalone novel to whet my appetite. So far this particularly story took me a few chapters to get into, but now I'm moving along at a good clip and really liking it. She's reading a different Gene Wolfe book now, so we plan to swap when we're both finished. The one she's reading is An Evil Guest.

For things like that, I think folks (makers of movies, tv shows, particularly ones that will have an audience that crosses many generations) have realized how important it is to layer their humor. Because I apparently can't write a post this morning without mentioning My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I'm going to relate a short story to illustrate. We watched an episode of this show with four adults in the room and one 3-year-old. The 3-year-old was giggling uncontrollably at things that we only smiled at, and we were laughing uproariously at the jokes/references that only an older audience would get. I think they definitely made this movie with that kind of thing in mind. The humor just hits all the different types, levels, and age groups.

I can't think of anyone else, but I do want to say this game has been really fun. AND it really shows where each person's allegiance lies!!

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!

In the past earplugs have worked, but for some reason the recent batch of snoring is stronger than the blocking-power of the earplugs! So sad. At least the past couple nights he's not been as bad, and I can only hope the trend will continue! I do love a glass of wine. You know, also the past couple of evenings we've had some wine with dinner. I wonder if that and less snoring relate to one another?! Awww, I feel for you, for the theme song also gets stuck in my head! Though, I'm the sort of person that sings, hums and whistles all the time anyway, and it doesn't necessarily bug me. Besides, the husband has also been playing Final Fantasy X lately, so it's almost as likely I'll have the battle music in my head for that, which is really awesome music. I think the key with MLP is actually watching the episodes in order from the beginning, at least if you want to get it all in context. We got into it because my husband is a big table-top and card gamer and, therefore, so am I by connection. He went to our local game store to play Star Wars cards and saw the starter deck of the MLP game there and decided to check it out. Then one of the guys he knows, who looks like a real tough guy complete with a shaved head and tattoos of all the Magic: The Gathering mana symbols on his arms, came over and got all excited to see my husband had bought the MLP card game. So we got into playing the card game and figured we should check out the show because the cards all include references to characters and events in the show. We liked the show from the start but were further hooked when we started catching references to Star Trek and other things that only adults of our generation or older would get. There's also a whole episode that is like a train murder mystery (though instead of a person being murdered, cakes and other desserts are mysterious eaten!), which had references to Holmes, Agatha Christie, and even a little old-school cartoons that feature the bag guy tying someone to the train tracks. Now the younger generation will know about the ol' train track trap! Hopefully at some point you can see some different episodes and it will help. (Cool smiley chosen for the sake of Rainbow Dash. ) -

Okay, my edit note definitely came across differently than I meant it. Ha! For some reason, when I tried to use the quote feature earlier, the line saying I was quoting you disappeared and I had to add it back again. But I appreciate the effort you went to to explain the actual picture of Vash! (Can't stop giggling now...)

Considering it's the roughest around the edges, it was clear Brandon was going to be an amazing author since I keep reading after Elantris, my first Brandon Sanderson read. After that was the Mistborn Trilogy (the last one hadn't come out in paperback yet when I read it, so I have two in paperback and the third in hardback), and all books after that were read in the order they were published (Wheel of Time books included).

Atilium, loving ALL the pet names, especially Sgt. Pepper, Doodle (my old cat used to have the nickname of Fenny Fenny Doodle Bug), Olaf and Purdy, for some reason. Purdy is just an awesome name for some reason.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!

Two decent nights of sleep after that terrible one have definitely helped! I do need a vacation but have to wait until September 7th to start it, which is okay. Fortunately, work has been less crazy the past couple days, which is helpful. I also have a great husband when he's not sleeping/snoring, so he's since made some nice gestures to help me in the sleep/stress department, like offering to go grocery shopping this week instead of me. That's rather funny about the TB 'diagnosis'! Hopefully it really isn't a serious condition! Speaking of trying to save the world... Sometimes I'm tempted and give in to watching/reading the news, and it doesn't take much to get me feeling the same way you described. Gotta stay away from that stuff for our own sanity! -

Female Villains in Epic Fantasy (General Spoilers)
traceria replied to Mistdork's topic in General Discussion
First, I've been following the thread since my last comment, but work has been way too crazy to actually post a decent response. I'm going to try to dredge up some thoughts I had while reading over the past so many days. Kasimer, you bring up some good questions with regard to women-dominated militaristic societies. Another possibility, to borrow from your power-armour idea, is the idea that women, usually being smaller in form, might fit better into such machinery. For example, maybe women in such a society fit better in a cockpit of a mobile suit or aircraft. It's possible that being of smaller size might be an advantage in a society that's developed that way. Maybe there are limited resources, enough to warrant being very frugal with the materials that make up suits or aircraft. One of the reasons I like Star Trek so much is that they tend to run into societies that do things differently than the peoples that make up the Federation. There was one society where women were definitely the undisputed leaders. In the one episode of Next Gen (it was season 1 and not necessarily a favorite of mine, but still...) I'm thinking of, obviously Riker ends up interacting with one of the women leaders. And he manages at least for a short time to give her the view of a man who is actually worth respecting. It doesn't have a lasting effect, at least not much of one (they end up only banishing some men instead of executing them). The men in their society were treated much like slaves, in my opinion. (No one deserves that, no matter what gender or any other attribute they possess.) From what I can remember, military was not a huge deal in that society. They must have had some kind of peace-keeping group because they were dealing with the trouble-making men (Federation guys who survived a crash on the planet), but at least in the episode there wasn't a huge military presence. Even this episode assumes that women in leadership is unequal to military power. So, to evolve our Villainous Little Girl with Domination Dreams idea... It could go one way where she wields power by using those who are physically strong around her (be they female or male). Or it could go another way and she could wield power because she herself has the skill or figures out some way to be physically 'indestructible' (not unlike the view of the Lord Ruler) and takes over everything that way (or tries to). -
I know there's already a topic about what folks do when they're sad and need a pick-me-up, but I figured, for those of us who sometimes need a Good Rant before we can return to what passes for normal, I'd start a new topic specifically for the purpose. So, please loose your Good Rants here! Those replying to rants should feel free to offer condolences, snacks (chocolate is definitely acceptable), encouragement to have a stiff upper lip and so on. And if I see any references to First World Problems (Weird Al lyrics or otherwise), well, I at least am not going to give you a tough time. After all, you're already having a bad day! So, to give you an example, my rant from yesterday would have gone something like this: I can't even say I got out of bed on the wrong side. I was sleeping on the SOFA thanks to the incessant snoring of my husband. No matter which way he turned, it WOULD NOT STOP. Finally, after getting terrible sleep from the interruptions caused by the snoring, I finally gave up and went to sleep on the sofa at 5:30 AM. Thanks to moving around and doing things that required Mental Power like setting the alarm on my phone, my brain woke up just enough to not want to go back to sleep. So I ended up laying there for another 30-40 minutes (at a guess) trying to fall back to sleep only to have disturbing dreams. 7 AM came too quickly. Then work was TERRIBLE. I work in a law firm, so we keep a time sheet all day, every day. Usually I bill something between 5-6 hours in a work day, but yesterday I ended up billing over 7 hours. Now, consider that of the 8 hours I'm here, one of those is for lunch, so in essence, I billed more hours than I was actually here (we bill by tenths of an hour, which are six minutes a piece, so if something takes only ten minutes, it will actually be billed as 0.2 hours or 12 minutes). By the end of the day, I had about five partial files open on my desk, each one having interrupted work on another, and was just plain sick of getting phone calls and emails and having to be PLEASANT since we work for these people or at least don't want to alienate them. So that set me up for a nice long semi-nervous breakdown last night, which, in retrospect, actually ended up as a good thing because I felt much better after crying and yelling (as in, talking very loudly and quickly but not with malicious intent) at no one in particular while making a good effort to use up half a tissue box. And that, folks, is yesterday's rant for me. Feeling much better after my evening rant, this sample one, and a better night's sleep. Take it away, anyone who is having a horrible day!
