Why do they even make mobile websites! Argh, the links always get confusing switching over, and they're usually so compressed to the point of uselessness. This one should work. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/man-served-prison-term-thankful-home-article-1.1781131

Unless there are extravagant economic restrictions regarding price setting in Alethkar, what they were doing was legal. Kal was threatening to inform the army that they could just have slaves harvest sap and cut out the apothecary middleman, which could have devastating effects on the economy in regards to apothecaries on the shattered plains. Compared to what pharmaceutical companies gouge the prices to nowadays, it really isn't that bad. The dude was just trying to low ball Kaladin. Stealing from the dead is in reference to his time in Amaram's army.

Do not speak of that evil! I think this is more on the right track. We've got this quote from a KR:

A few nitpicks, first off, we are assuming that Nalan has his honorblade back, because Brandon let it slip that one Herald went back for the blade, but we don't know entirely for sure that it was Nalan, Also the Skybreakers are bound by the same rules as everyone else. In the Lift interlude, Nalan enforces the laws within the Skybreakers when he dealt with the minion that slit Gawx's throat. I think the term fun, might only apply to the person who isn't on the receiving end of said powers.

The first Monster Melee topic I posted was Whitespine Vs Warg, and Kobold King made the suggestion that Roshone be riding the Warg into battle to get revenge against the Whitespine. It solved a lot of problems writing wise, as it gave me a good perspective to go with, and was pretty satisfying to boot, so I decided to expand that story arch every week with these monster melee polls. The narrative portion of the threads I've nicknamed "The Ballad of Roshone's Revenge." He and the Whitespine will be recurring characters in the narratives every week. I think we should use WoA Koloss, as we have a solid wealth of information about them, whereas there's precious little to go from TFE to show how the Lord Ruler affected them. This also negates the extra hemalurgic charges being infused into the Koloss, as they haven't had to reuse spikes enough at this point. Same reasoning for not using AoL Koloss, we simply don't have enough information. HoA Koloss also are under the direct command of either inquisitors, Vin, or Ruin, and I think we should keep them more wild than tame. Also, I've been skimming through the battles as best I can, and I'm not seeing any mention of supernatural speed. I think the main difference between the troll and the Koloss is how...well...dense the trolls are compared to the Koloss. Trolls seem to be more squat and bulky, whereas the Koloss share proportions closer to humans. This gives them more of a lithe build that would be easier to maneuver than the bulky builds of the Trolls. Really, at least IMO, it seems that the difference would have to be the trolls have a natural source for strength, while the Koloss have both their natural bulk, and the Hemalurgic power to add, so they would have abilities that are incongruous with their bodies, but not grossly exaggerated. I'll keep looking to try and hash this out for sure though.

Stick has been around much longer than I realized

Do not underestimate the power of the stick. Case and point, my phone suggested the 'stick' and 'stickbinders' for the above sentence without typing after 'underestimate'. -

I am intrigued. I just bought my book not too long ago and haven't had the time to browse through yet. Once I'm acquainted with the game, I'll be coming by the website. -

Eight on eight huh....I'd better get a start on this battle early. You guys are definitely going to force me to grow as a writer from these threads, but I've always enjoyed a challenge! I'll have to go back and do some research. I'll get back to you on that tomorrow, if not later tonight. So we've got our groups set. I think that we should also decide on armaments. Each of the Koloss should be armed with swords appropriated to their size, but it's the size that's the true variable we need to work out. The troll we need to decide how many will be armed with what weapons, how many be armored, and attempt to scale this to equal out any advantages between size and equipment. I think that maybe two fully grown Koloss with two fully armored trolls, four medium Koloss, and four unarmored trolls that are still equipped with edged weapons, and two small Koloss, with two trolls armed with clubs.

Why does Jasnah value music over visual arts?

Why does Jasnah value music over visual arts?
Fifth of Daybreak replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Stormlight Archive
Definitely plausible. Upvote. On the other hand, does she know specifics about their songs, or does she just know they have a way of communicating using music? -
I can see where you're coming from on that, but at the same time, Elhokar wanted to execute Kaladin for just accusing Amaram. I don't see it as too much of a stretch for his other crimes to be punishable by death. But I think we've debated ourselves into a corner, and face an agree to disagree moment. I guess that would depend on what the laws are regarding judges and prosecution. I think if it meant even coming close to breaking a law, Nalan wouldn't do it, but if it's on the side of bending the law, he wouldn't be above it.

Why does Jasnah value music over visual arts?
Fifth of Daybreak posted a topic in Stormlight Archive
In Shallan's initial interview with Jasnah, she asks Shallan to sing for her, but then completely neglects the visual arts when Shallan mentions them. This seems very incongruous to me, especially considering in the scene, Jasnah has her sing in the middle of the testing. Why would Jasnah favor music? It seems to me that visual arts would be far more important to her as a veristitalian, as it allows her to see visual representations of things in the past, whereas, unless you're a listener, songs are not generally used as historical records. There's enough written history in human Roshar that songs would be obsolete as a way to preserve facts. Thoughts? -
That's obviously the stick. You can tell by the way it isn't fire.

I definitely agree that Kaladin redeemed himself, and the story arch was satisfying in terms of restoring my faith in him, but I'm merely arguing the point that he's a saint Nalan couldn't find a way to prosecute. He's got a longer rap sheet than Shallan does! Shallan's murder of her father could definitely be linked to self defense with her stepmother dead and her brother maimed at his hand, and when you think about the soulcaster heist, she was actually trading an object of greater value for one of lesser value, since her soulcaster could be repaired, and Jasnah's could never work on its own.

I honestly had the same thought when reading it the first time, but during a reread I noticed this section: I think it's unlikely that sawdust was used for packing the crates, from the term 'now' being used in that section. I know for a fact that long term exposure to saw dust is bad for the lungs as well. I think the most interesting thing from Lightsword Panda's article is that the metal dust isn't causing pulmonary fibrosis. So possibly the steel dust wouldn't cause the fibrosis, but it would still lead to some sort of pulmonic disorder, asthma, or COPD at the very least.

A tad late this week (24 hour shift yesterday was a little hectic) but here is the next installment in the Monster Melee, and soon to follow, more of the Ballad of Roshone's Revenge, where I take the the winner of the polls, and create a fight scene using the tactics and battle mechanics the thread provides me with, all at the expense of Brightlord Roshone. This week's match up: Troll vs Koloss! So, as with the Warg, I think that Tolkien has the standard on the troll, and I'll be deferring to the Lord of the Rings Mythology. Let's assume to start with that the troll is Olog-hai, so they don't turn into stone. Troll: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Middle-earth) And of course, our favorite blue buddies, the Koloss (Mistborn Spoilers inside the link): http://coppermind.net/wiki/Koloss I'm not against making this a group battle, and we also should determine the size of the Koloss fighting the troll. Just like last week, I'm going to withhold my vote until battle parameters have been agreed upon, and some discussion ensues. Also, I want to say that the more discussion we can get in, the more ideas I can draw from the thread to create a dynamic battle scene, and gives you the opportunity to find your ideas in the fight! I'm also open to taking ideas for future Monster Melee polls, so have at it! Edit: Fixed my messed up troll link that really confused me as to how I messed that up.

At the very least, there's some compounding of justifying the illegal stealing from the dead to make illegal bribes. He doesn't seem like a saint to me, especially from his perspective. Kaladin breached his duty to act by not reporting Moash, and then meeting with the men who Moash introduced him to. Then he gave the go ahead to Moash for his approval, on the same day that he gave him his shards. That looks pretty incriminating to me.

He ripped up Tvlakv's map. He blackmailed the apothecary. He steals from the dead. He bribed the runners to pick up his soldiers. Actually he has quite a few counts of bribery. Oh yeah, and he conspired to murder the king. I'm going to have to go with:

The Ghostblood's motives regarding Amaram
Fifth of Daybreak replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Stormlight Archive
Once again, not trying to be rude, but this is all off topic. There is great discussion about Heleran and the Skybreakers along these lines here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7106-was-heleran-a-surgebinder/ I have my own theory in there as well, very similar to Moogle's but this isn't the place for that discussion, as much as I enjoy the mystery of Helaran (the only questions I asked Brandon when I met him were on the subject of Helaran and his blade being unique,) this thread is about the Ghostbloods and Amaram.- 33 replies
