Here's an interesting set of MLP headcanons for you. Some I've gotten from Tumblr, a few connections I've put together for myself. We know that there are three primary groups of ponies: unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies. Each variety has its own type of innate magic: Unicorns are capable of the most flamboyant, versatile forms of sorcery and spellwork, which they channel through their horns. Pegasi are capable of manipulating air and weather patterns, even capable of walking on clouds. (And possibly liquid water as well, as one Tumblr headcanon suggests.) Earth ponies appear magicless at first glance, but Lauren Faust has confirmed that they possess their own brand of innate magic that brings them into harmony with the earth. That's why so many of Equestria's farmers are earth ponies. While alicorns appear to be solely unicorn-pegasus fusions at first glance, they actually possess the innate magic of all three varieties, earth pony included. It's a simple system, but when you think about it, it allows for a bit of extra complication. Consider the following: if it is possible to be a primary pony, possessing only one brand of magic, and if it is possible to be a ternary pony, an alicorn that possesses all three, should it not be possible to be a binary pony, possessing the magics of two out of the three types of pony? I believe that Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, otherwise known as Princess Cadence, is the best candidate for identification as a binary alicorn. She quite clearly possesses both wings and a horn, which should put her in the same category as Celestia or Luna; however, flashbacks to her days as a foalsitter prove that she appears to be aging quite normally for a pony, implying that she may not be immortal. More evidence for Cadence's mortality might be extrapolated from the fact that she happily marries the mortal Shining Armor, with the concept of her drastically outliving him never once coming up. If Cadence is not immortal, she thus lacks something that Celestia and Luna possess; I believe this nebulous quality is the magic of the earth ponies, and that it is the presence of all three magics that causes immortality. What does this concept imply? For starters, we can now tentatively explain a tweet from Hasbro which states that Twilight Sparkle will not have a lifespan that forces her to outlive all of her friends--perhaps Twilight Sparkle is a binary alicorn, possessing unicorn and pegasus magic but not the earth pony spark necessary for eternal life. Celestia was thus able to bestow all the outward appearances of alicornhood to her star pupil without having to pass the dubious blessing of immortality along with it. If we expand our conception of what a binary alicorn should be, we may find ourselves with an explanation for the immense power of another of the show's characters: King Sombra. Sombra is described as a unicorn within the episodes he appears in, and certainly looks the part. That said, he is far more powerful than any other unicorn seen on the show, capable of single-hoofedly conquering an entire Equestrian nation and wiping it off the face of the earth on a dying whim. Fan depictions often depict him as easily capable of going horn-to-horn with Celestia and Luna at the same time; how is this simple unicorn able to accomplish such impressive magical feats? With the speculative classification of alicorns, it's easy to explain: Sombra was a binary alicorn. He possessed the horn and magical might of a unicorn, but he also possessed the innate magic of the earth pony race. Could his earth pony connection to the earth manifested through his affinity for the black crystals that have become iconically associated with him? To summarize: ponies can be born with any one of three types of magic, or any combination of the three. The designation of "alicorn" can refer to ternary ponies such as Princess Celestia, who possess unicorn, pegasus, and earth pony magics, or it can refer to individuals such as Cadence, who possesses only unicorn and pegasus magic and cannot achieve immortality without completing the trio. It could even be speculatively used to refer to individuals such as Sombra, who may possess earth pony magic in conjunction with an external feature such as a horn or a pair of wings. I hope you've enjoyed this impromptu essay on the magical classification of colorful cartoon ponies. Tune in next week for a comprehensive look at the history of Equestria, non-pony forms of magic, and whether or not Pinkie Pie is secretly a team of changelings working in unison with one another to absorb love from Ponyville and the viewers of the show.

Have you made sure the backstory-backstory Epic has a believable biography? Maybe you should add some Epics to his backstory just to be safe.

Nice, but I personally think "Corvallis" is already a much more original, awesome, and badchull name than pretty much anything we could think of. I mean, it comes from a Latin phrase meaning "heart of the valley." You can't get any cooler than Latin.

We wrote the word "lion" on a Post-it note, attached the note to our windshield, and ran him over with a truck. Fun fact: cookies are 80% more romantic than candlelit dinners.

Last night I dreamed I was touring the bayous of Reckonerverse Louisiana with Mizzy. We were awesome partners and we managed to assassinate a High Epic with the power to create giant lions out of magma. Magma-lions. Lions made out of magma. His weakness was somebody writing the word "lion" within his vicinity. Then Mizzy and I did a high five and congratulated one another. While deeply in love with her, I was too nervous to tell her how I really felt, and merely followed in her footsteps, desperately wanting more from our relationship but daring not to upset the status quo. I have weird dreams sometimes.

I like the name Rainmaker! (Haven't seen Looper though.) Having trouble thinking of any PI but the old stand-bys. Super healing, impenetrable skin, reincarnation... maybe her body turns to mist or water when she's injured, reforming fully healed? Also, here's the Khione pony.

Snowfall is a canon Epic namedropped in Steelheart, so anyone adopting him/her is presumably completely off the table. I can't speak for Twi, but I'm pretty sure she's established that Khione will be appearing in flashbacks, so I wouldn't bet on being able to adopt her. Hope I'm not sounding negative about the weather-manipulator thing. I think it's an awesome idea--I'm just stating what the ramifications of zis inclusion would be. I'm going to post this now because sparks there are a lot of posts today.

I like it, though isn't Frostfire's power set something like this? (I've long maintained that the English language needs a better gender-neutral pronoun than "it.") In the Oregon Expanded Universe, we've established that weather in Oregon is primarily influenced by the weather manipulators Snowfall in California and Khione in Alaska, whose opposing influences cause turbulent weather in Oregon on occasion. A Corvallis weather manipulator would throw all that straight out the window--not necessarily a bad thing, but something to bring up I suppose. I have no ideas for limiting Euphoria's power set at the moment. And I'm scared of taking too long thinking of a solution, lest I be double or triple ninja'd again.

Awesome ideas! Especially Euphoria's giftings being used as a currency. That idea is incredible. The thing I'd wonder about Euphoria's past-altering abilities (retrologging?) is how much she can affect the physical bodies of people she... retrologs. Can she cause someone to have suffered a scarring injury at some point in his past? Could she cause someone to have exercised every day of his life, to make him more fit and well-muscled in the present? Could she cause someone to have been a candidate for the Knighthawk Foundry's top-secret robotics program which doesn't exactly exist, thus turning the individual into a killer cyborg soldier which she can then use to defend the city?

Ah. I won't assume any such thing, then. I like the Artemis suggestion, by the way. Perhaps she could have some sort of bow-and-arrow related powers, making her an Epic version of both Wonder Woman and characters like Hawkeye or the Green Arrow? It would also tie into the mythology more cleanly. That, or Artemis could have some sort of powers related to the moon, as Mythology!Artemis was a lunar deity.
