  1. No, this topic's not about the Reckonerverse characters re-imagined in a kindergarten setting. (Though for the record, if we ever have that conversation I want to be a part of it.) This topic is for discussing a new WoB about Epics, and attempting to decipher what it could possibly mean. At the Reddit AMA, Brandon Sanderson was asked whether Epics could have children, and whether their children would in any way inherent their parents' Epicness. He responded like so: For a long time, I believed Epics were sterile. I believed this largely because of the info on Epic genetics we received in the first book, informing us Epic DNA is mutated from the normal human genome. I assumed that such mutants would be incapable of reproduction. I was, in a word, wrong. Not only can they reproduce, but their children can in some cases inherit Epicness from their parents. But how exactly does that work as a mechanic? Do they inherit the same powers as their parents, or do they gain new abilities of their own? Do they inherit the same weaknesses? How many Epics have sired or given birth to offspring since Calamity first rose? As a side note before I turn over the reins of conversation to you guys, I'd like to place my bet now that Night's Sorrow, long speculated to be in the final book, is a child, and possibly the spawn of two Epics. We'll see if I'm any closer to the truth now than I was about Epic sterility.
  2. Mizzy! 100% Mizzy. The others are all awesome, but Mizzy definitely takes the cake for me. Firefight spoilers:
  3. Yes, but conventional explosives can't render an area uninhabitable--if a city is completely leveled by conventional explosives, there's nothing stopping anyone from building new houses over the powdered remains of the old should they so choose to. Whether or not they would is a different matter altogether, but conventional explosives don't have the same poisoning effect on the environment that nukes do. Even nukes couldn't make an area seriously uninhabitable forever; Hiroshima and Nagasaki have bustling populations today, for instance, despite the tragedies of 1945. From what I can gather, this is mostly because a nuclear bomb doesn't leave behind nearly as much radioactive material as a reactor like the ones in Chernobyl or Fukushima. Even fallout can be mostly prevented by detonating the bomb high in the air as opposed to on the ground, but even in the worst case scenario, as long as a city isn't continually pulverized with dozens of nukes, the area will become habitable after about a decade. (Albeit with slightly higher chances of cancer or leukemia, but these chances too dissipate after another decade.) So overall, some cities would be destroyed, and some of their ruins would run a slight risk of giving you leukemia, but we're talking about nothing as dramatic as enormous glowing fields of lethal radiation. Conventional explosives certainly wouldn't cause an area to become permanently uninhabitable, unless we're talking about an enormous number of mines being hidden in an area. On a side note, Oregon too, from Megan's description, shouldn't exactly be uninhabitable. As long as none of the Epics there managed to poison the landscape, plants would start growing there again immediately, with animals close behind them. In an ironic turn of things, the wasteland of Oregon could become green and lush again within a few years, with the ashes left behind by the old battles nourishing new generations of trees. And that's assuming Megan wasn't giving in to hyperbole when she spoke of the entire state being equally demolished. In this I am in full agreement. Calamity doesn't seem to use statistics as a base for his decisions; while we don't understand his criteria for choosing Epics, it seems very likely that these criteria do exist. While cities such as New York or Shanghai would obviously have a higher number of people to choose from, isolated tribes would be just as likely to manifest Epics, as would isolated research teams at the South Pole or the crews of submarines deep underwater.

  5. I was so sure that Epics were sterile. I should know better than to be confident in my headcanons by now.
  6. Welcome Haelbarde! We're happy to have you. I don't think you'll find our insanity so bad once you're a part of it. In other news, Brandon responded to another of our RP questions!
  7. Anyone can make a character at any time. If you just want to try it out--a "free trial," if you will--then I'd suggest making a character who's either a vanilla or a minor Epic. Someone who can blend back into the background or be taken over as an NPC if you choose not to join. But I bet you'd have a lot of fun. There's something in the RP for everyone. 8 Brightdeath 5 The Metal 4 Timelock 8 Bioterror 6 Financier 17 Adventurer 11 Lockvault

  10. I seem to have accidentally marked the whole subforum as read, so I haven't actually read your post yet. Doing so now...
  11. 7 Brightdeath 5 The Metal 7 Timelock 5 Bloody Mary 10 Bioterror 7 Financier 16 Adventurer All you can do is bump him to his last save point! He will prevail! 11 Lockvault
  12. Every time Edgerunner calls him Arse, The Dalles' prospects grow a little bit darker.
  13. It was a suggestion I delivered to Twi for how Lightwards might go about attempting to destroy Portland with a small nuclear weapon. Named for this song, it was unheard of for its time but is now fully defunct with the other plans that have been made for the city. As for Arsenal: at this current time, Arsenal would happily destroy The Dalles if the alternative was letting another Epic take it. The thing about Arsenal is that he's already fully corrupted by his constant power use, but he's kept in line by the pride he has at keeping up his obligations. That pride would be compromised by seeing the city taken over by another Epic, and rather than suffer that affront to his pride, he would attempt to do as much damage to the city as possible before heading out of the city borders and heading for Alaska.
  14. Probably not. He'd be in Hawaii before the first particles of radiation hit him, and I think most of our characters would be smart enough to figure that out. I think it'd be more likely for someone to try hitting Astoria with one to take out the dangerously OP Epics there, or for an invading force to try using a small tactical nuke to crack open the force field surrounding Corvallis. Or use one on Iconoclast. That is a perfectly acceptable response to a threat.
  15. Personally I think nukes should be used sparingly by the RP, if at all. It feels like a lazy way of destroying a state. I don't know--there was Project September. I seem to recall you wondering if you were PMing a real life supervillain when I first brought that up.
  16. She made it pretty clear that warring Epics were the ones doing the destruction--though that doesn't rule out the possibility of some Epics doing nuke-like damage to the state. Or The Dalles blowing when Arsenal decides to apply a scorched earth policy and pops a Tsar Bomba out of midair.
  17. OK, here's what I'm about to post if it's alright with everyone: I figure it's worth a try to see if he's willing to answer RP-specific setting questions.
  18. That one's almost certainly RAFO bait. How about asking how many years after Calamity Oregon was destroyed?
  19. Finally! An opportunity to see if Reckoners is Cosmere! I mean, what do I ask? Do I post new comments altogether, or post as part of the same comment chain?
  20. Thanks for asking! Yeah... do you think I should put obvious RAFO-bait in a different color? TwiLyght asked him about Snowfall's powers and sphere of influence and got this in reply:
  21. With it now confirmed that Brandon will be avoiding answering any questions about the setting of the Reckoners books, ( ) here's a candidate for a revised FUNTIMES list. Questions that seem likely to not be answered are highlighted in red, and are thus candidates for removal. What do you guys think?
