That could work. What kind of acid are we talking about? Super-potent, turn-Lightwards-into-Harvey-Twoface-until-his-next-resurrection acid, or milder burn-your-face-but-not-leave-half-of-it-a-skeleton kind of acid?

He can try to, but if he's floating high enough to avoid pterodactyl or bullet attacks he shouldn't have much accuracy. So Lightwards wouldn't feel debilitating pain so much as mild confusion as a man in a hot air balloon pelts the floor around him with acid balloons, screaming angrily in a thick German accent all the while.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Kobold King replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Count me in fifth. Though I agree, Twi and many others have made this thread not just a veritable bastion of compassion. -
That sounds awesome. Retrocognition is a power with a lot of untapped potential in literature. The sheer power and majesty of the past, all laid out in front of you? The ability to stand beside a building and see all the days of its existence, the work put it into its construction, and even the layout of the land centuries before men first laid eyes on it? Can you picture standing on a street and seeing the footsteps of everyone to ever travel it, or to stand in a field and watch every storm that's ever swept across it? I shiver to imagine what a retrocog's eyes would grow accustomed to. When I was a kid I used to constantly bewilder myself by sitting outside and imagining what had transpired before me, from yesterday all the way back to the time of dinosaurs. Of all superpowers, I must say retrocognition excites me the most to think about, and I've got a rough draft for a character in my original setting who uses it. (Backtrack is a poor example of what a retrocog would be capable of, but I like to think I've made his power at least vaguely interesting in his PoVs. ) But... I'm talking about myself again. What brings about this change in your mind? What would Stombaugh use his powers for?

The Worst That Could Happen Foundation
Kobold King replied to Kobold King's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Well it was, but since this constitutes the magical umpteenth time I've been reminded of it, and I have some extra time to spend writing now, I can try to get something up. If anyone's still interested, of course. I'm afraid my neglect may have killed everyone's excitement to the point that no thread necromancy could restore. -
The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Kobold King replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Well we all have made slontzes of ourselves and fallen short of the non-slontzeness of God, but we still have a few redeeming qualities to ourselves. -
Just for the record, I have nothing against conservative Christians--I guess you could count me as one, technically. I just think some of the more rabidly vocal members of the anti-Harry Potter camp kind of make fools of themselves trying to "prove" J. K. Rowling is a satanist. Get the logs out of your eyes before you try pulling the splinter from Ms. Rowling's, guys. Please and thank you.

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Kobold King replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I have no idea why Woody is so opposed to kindness. Care to elaborate? We could all use a reminder that the human race isn't entirely made up of slontzes. -
They're wrong on that, since there are several good magicians in the series even setting aside Aslan and the Deep Magic. Off the top of my head, I can name several characters who were skilled in the art of magic and used those skills for good: Caspian's tutor Cornelius; Ramandu; The magician who ruled over the Dufflepuds; The Hermit of the Southern March in The Horse and His Boy. These characters were consistently portrayed in a positive light, with magic itself presented as a natural part of Creation with nothing inherently good or evil about it. Characters were judged by their actions rather than by the tools they used; no one ever said "The White Witch is evil because she uses magic, and that's an abomination." They call her evil because she turns dissenters into statues and keeps the entire land frosted over in an eternal winter. There's a fine distinction there.

Yep. Aslan is Jesus Christ as he appears to the Narnians, and numerous references are made to his being the son of the Great Emperor Beyond-the-Sea.

What I don't get is that a lot of the people who vigorously attack Harry Potter are also devoted fans of the Narnia books. The Narnia books, which contain: Magic both good and evil; Murder on large and small scales; Slavery and associated beatings; Implications of torture and cannibalism; At least two personifications of the Devil. What is so terrible about the Harry Potter books that can't be said about Narnia or LotR?

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.
Kobold King replied to ljósmóður's topic in Stormlight Archive
It took me waaaay longer than I'd care to admit for my brain to accept Steel Inquisitors had facial tattoos. Sometimes I still don't fully comprehend it. -
I suppose I could always make a few tweaks to Lightwards' Rending backstory, if it really means that much to you.

The Adlets are a favorite of mine; they're like the Inuit version of satyrs, but with the legs of dogs instead of goats. The Bunyip of Australian Aboriginal mythology is also a fantastic mythical being to play with, as is the Mapinguari of South American legend. The Wikipedia category for mythical creatures is a godsend for this kind of research. Have fun, and be sure to tell us about what you create.

And have a couple of adults bunny-hop across the stage in realistic horse masks. That sounds adorable. Do I take it you changed your mind that a Rending would have improved the proceedings?
