Awesome. Sent the gist of my character concept to you in a PM. Hope this gets off the ground. -
New Legion & Legion: Skin Deep hardcovers (with new covers)
Kobold King replied to WeiryWriter's topic in Other Stories
Eh... the art's awesome, but I really loved the old covers that showed the shadows of Stephen's hallucinations surrounding him. These are more generic paranormal-investigator covers. -
Maybe, if he can survive recommending a pair of bright purple shades to Steelheart. Which, again, would make for a pretty entertaining fanfiction.

For Lightwards, it depends on whether he loses the ability to control Warriors he's already killed. If so, then they'd immediately turn on him and kill him before he has any chance at all to react. Especially the dinosaurs like Wes. Aldo would bluff his way out of the crowd, and while always frustrated and bitter about his loss, would eventually take up a position as an entertainer in the court of some powerful Epic. He has experience not being murdered by High Epics, so he'd probably make a pretty good living for himself. Deathwish would curse very loudly and obscenely while trying to take off from the ground. He'd be sullen and refuse to leave his quarters for a couple of days, in which he'd have a very pronounced mid-life crisis as he tried to figure out what he was without his powers. Eventually, I think he'd sneak away and join Quicksilver's gang hoping for a high position, giving away as many town secrets as he could in the hope of currying favor. If he stayed in the criminal underworld long enough and heard rumors about Regalia's connection to Calamity, he might start the long and arduous journey across the country hoping to reach Babilar and get his powers back. It would actually make for a pretty decent fanfiction, come to think of it. Backtrack would cry, but ultimately his lot in life wouldn't change much. He'd get a job washing dishes for some Epic, with the rationale that Epics usually want nothing to do with dishwashers and would leave him alone.

Comic books come under a lot of criticism for the shallow and sometimes exploitive way they depict female characters. Who, in your opinion, is an example of a female comic character whose characterization is handled well by the narrative and art work?

Well, judging my characters by these standards... Lightwards is most definitely a Ravenclaw, as there's no form of community that he admires and he's wholeheartedly devoted to the pseudo-morality he's developed for himself. Sam is , surprisingly enough, a Slytherin, as she has a very strict "us vs them" worldview. While friendly to other vanillas, she doesn't really open up to them easily and doesn't have much desire to form a large and open community. Revolution is a Hufflepuff by anyone's standards, I think. She's hard-working and loyal, thus fitting the House by Rowling's definition, and is also devoted to her community and expanding said community. Note the difference between her and Sam's reactions to Ray; while Sam remained convinced that Ray was an Epic and thus a slontze, Revolution sees even Epics as potential friends and future members of her community. Vondra is a Gryffindor. He sees his sense of duty and responsibility as innate and unquestionable, and clashes with those who question it. Arsenal I could see as a Fallen Gryffindor. He once valued a moral and behavioral code he saw as infallible, but in recent times he holds on to his old ideologies only out of a sense of stubborn pride. There's not really much of anything he truly values any more. Thinking about this, Deathwish's House is the one that surprised me the most. I think he's actually a good candidate for Gryffindor. Now, hear me out; Gryffindor in this system is about believing in an inherent moral code and sticking to it fiercely. Edgar Hawk respected criminal subculture and desperately wanted to be a part of it, while as Deathwish he's shifted that respect to the very-similar Epics. He's defined by his determination to follow the way of life of the people he sees as the best and baddest in his world. Since he has no interest in objectively examining his morality and cares nothing for community, I think he'd be much the same kind of Gryffindor as Peter Pettigrew was. Backtrack's the one who's giving me the most amount of trouble, and not just because he's too pathetic for most of the Houses to take him. I think ultimately I'd class him as a Gryffindor, as he strongly believes in a strict system of right and wrong. He doesn't always follow that system, but the twinges of guilt he feels about breaking it coupled with his rare heroic impulses are strong indicators that he does have one. At his best, his priority lies with being a halfway decent person more than community or the search for a better moral code, so I'd have to keep him in Gryffindor. Truth be told, I'm kind of surprised how many of my characters wound up in Gryffindor. What about your characters, Twi?

Eh... honestly, I'm a bit biased against trophy hunting because of where I live. Around this part of Texas you can find the dumbest and cruelest kind of hunter; the kind who treats the killing of animals as a fun hobby. I have nothing against hunting. Heck, even though I've got a phobia of taxidermy I don't really have a moral problem with people mounting their heads or antlers on their walls. But I believe that no animal that should kill another for sport alone. If you take another creature's life, you'd better need to do it. You'd better be doing it for food, for clothing, or for some other pragmatic purpose. Like the Native American tribes who made a point to use every part of the buffalo they killed, and then uttered a prayer thanking the animal for feeding and clothing them after death. Maybe this is spiteful of me, but I really can't stand the men around here that boast about some exotic creature they killed, and then left to rot on the African savannah or some jungle in Asia.

The thing about humans is that we're animals too. We shouldn't be separating ourselves from the animal kingdom altogether; we should embrace our role in the food chain. We should eat meat responsibly, not over-hunting or over-fishing. We should use our intelligence not to destroy natural habitats, but build our society around or even within natural habitats, like the "primitive" tribesmen who still live in remote parts of the world. And finally, we shouldn't go on genocidal witch hunts whenever an animal species inconveniences us, like when wolves preyed on our sheep and we retaliated by wiping out most of their species. We are part of the animal kingdom, in the enviable position of top predator. We should approach that role not seeing ourselves the lords of all creation, but as the humble linchpin that holds the ecosystem together.

Lightwards: Shock, followed by rage at being threatened, followed by either trying to placate him with a false crocodile-smile or foolishly trying to kill him with a pack of dinosaurs. In all likelihood, either course of action would result in his dying a lot of times. Also, there's a not 0% chance of Obliteration setting off his weakness. We won't know until we get an official PoV from him. Sam and Revolution: Shock at seeing him in Portland, followed by fear and a quiet attempt at sneaking away. Even those two know the limits of what they can get away with, and Obliteration is not an Epic Funtimes could protect them from. Aldo: Shock, followed by a determinedly casual and friendly attempt at sucking up to him. Would result in one roasted magician, extra crispy. Chicago Joe: A drunken hiccup, followed by pretending to be a drunken hobo statue and hoping Obliteration wouldn't notice the statue was shouting obscenities five seconds ago. Vondra: Shock, followed by seeking cover and consulting with Redlight if possible. He'd order the City Guard to concentrate fire on him wherever he goes, hoping that eventually he'd get tired of having his PI activated and would look for an easier target. If they allowed Obliteration any time at all between teleports, half the town would wind up dead. Deathwish, ironically, would stand the best chance of not only surviving but winning a fight against Obliteration. He'd immediately start a fight and try to goad Obliteration into roasting him at full power, which unless we invoked Plot Armor, would probably cause Obliteration to inadvertently kill himself. Every woman in The Dalles would hear about "That time I saved all of your fine butts" for years and years. Backtrack: Shock, followed by becoming paler than a snowflake, followed by a whimper that would make most bystanders think an asthmatic wallaby had just choked to death. He'd try running away, only to slam face-first against a wall, where he would cower into the sidewalk and start bawling. Obliteration would give a quote from the Book of Lamentations, and then Backtrack would sob himself into the big 7-11 in the sky.

The way I see it, PETA recognizes a legitimate problem but goes way too far in their attempt to fix it. They make excellent points on their website. Animals worldwide are suffering. Factory farms are places of filth, pain, and suffering, and there's not a living thing on this planet I would consign to their care. Pet and livestock abuse runs rampant across the world. We may be looking at the extinction of the world's most charismatic megafauna within only a couple of generations, and only a fraction of Earth's once lush and green ecosystems are still standing. However, none of PETA's proposed reforms would actually solve these problems. They demand that humanity as a whole stop eating meat, ignoring that humans were eating meat for tens of thousands of years without causing the problems we see today. They demand that farmers release their livestock into the wild, even the livestock that are raised on wide open pastures and given abundant food and space to roam. Even pets that are cherished by their owners and live happy and loving lives are seen by PETA as slaves that should be taken from their owners regardless of what the pets themselves would prefer. I don't pretend to know how to fix the world. I think that as long as there's civilization, problems are only going to get worse and any attempt at reform will at best be only a short-term solution. But I do know that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals fail to recognize the complexity of the issue, and the solutions they advocate would lead to more animal suffering, not less.

I have not seen that, but I have been assured a thousand times over that it is a travesty and an affront against animation.

Because Mad Mod is actually an old man, who used the cane he invented to sap away Robin's life force at the beginning of the episode. Honestly, I didn't even think about how much weirder that makes the episode until now.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Kobold King replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
It's... hard to explain, I guess. You're looking at actual pieces of history. Items that have weathered countless generations, have seen decades or even centuries come and pass before you, and have been handled by thousands of hands and gazed upon by millions of eyes. Honestly I can't see what you don't see in them, unless you're in a particularly suck-y one with a bunch of boring junk. Eh, I can think of anything... can someone throw me a bone here? -

As someone who adores museums and longs for the day when he can see another... this is even worse than TwiLyght complaining about eating fettuccine alfredo three times a week. In earnestness, though, it sucks that you're being dragged along in a boring place. Your family owes you an MLP marathon. -
Fine, I give up. I've been trying for hours to come up with another shellfish pun, but none come to mind. I mean, scallop, barnacle, bivalve, oyster? Who names these things? I need better material, darn it. Give me fish puns any ray.

Inside Out (Spoilers! Obviously.)
Kobold King replied to mail-mi's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Oh, I'm with you all the way. I loved the inter-human interactions in the movie, and how even the most basic of conversations played out like a tense diplomatic scene in Star Trek. Yes, this movie did feel different from other Pixar installations. While a lot of Pixar movies have a sort of ageless, artistic feel to them, Inside Out felt a little more like Wreck-It Ralph or Tangled. Still an amazing motion picture with a lot of genuine emotional content (heh), but still somewhat lesser than some of the more outstanding works in Pixar's history.- 26 replies

...Actually, she kind of does. I shall now celebrate Independence Day with a clip from Teen Titans. For context, the villain of the episode is a British inventor who tries to brainwash and take over America, turning the sky into a giant Union Jack and forcing everyone to speak in an English accent. ... Okay, it sounds kind of silly when I phrase it like that, but--okay, the series was kind of silly at times.
