"I'll show you, when the chips are down, these—ah—'civilised people'? They'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve." --The Joker, The Dark Knight Sometimes the path of a human life can branch into different directions. One road leads one way, the other leads down quite another. One might lead a man down the path of a hero, while one might lead straight into the depths of villainy. At least, that's the theory of it. So on this thread, let's explore some dark paths that Brandon Sanderson's characters could have ventured down. What would have taken to turn one of our lovable protagonists into a villain? What would have to change in the present to change them from the heroes they end their books as into hardened antagonists? How much would it take to break these characters whose morality we admire so much? Remember to use spoiler tags wherever appropriate. With that said, let our dark task of hero-breaking begin.

So we're taking some artistic license with the setting. We've still made one Calamity of a good story so far, so I don't see any need to fret over it.

I didn't even think of that. You should post it to Cosmere Theories and see what other people think.

Ready to have your minds blown, boys and girls? Tomatoes, having seeds, are actually fruits. Already know this? Well prepare for a more disturbing revelation...

I've been waiting to see your Lift reaction memes forever. The wait was long... ...But well worth it.

Do you see this? This is destiny, telling me my motto should be "Ball of fire" for a reason I do not, can not know until the appointed time.

... You know what, I don't even care about what narrative importance that might have. That sounds awesome.

I know. I must have missed that joke. What kind of nightmare would Autumn have? I'm sure it'd be awesome, but it might be a bit confusing unless there's a particular point of characterization you're trying to make with it.

Spren, because it would be hilarious to see my cats swatting at them. Would you rather tend a raised bed full of brown Final Empire plants, or a raised bed full of carnivorous rockbuds from Alethkar?

At least Kaladin had people he could call loved ones in the world, so I'll have to pick his lot. (Though am I allowed to stab a lighteyed officer, and then die killing as many of them as I can before their guards get me? ) Would you rather let Wit insult you for one hour, or have your rep changed to "Zucchini" on the 17th Shard?
-
Ah, yes. Make me look worse than I already do, why don't you. I'll try to get something written soon.

This would require a Regalia who cares about sleaziness at all, which we don't have. We have the Regalia who thinks seduction is a perfectly moral tool that a young woman should use to her advantage as much as possible. I was thinking more along the lines of "Lady Godiva," with the spectacular power of sensing when her nudity is being observed. And instantly smiting down anyone who sees her in such a state.

But surely Shiny Sparkle wouldn't violate anyone's boundaries to such an insidious extent... oh, who am I kidding. Who exactly would she want to spy on, anyway? She always bathes in a skin-tight leotard just for this eventuality. That could work. Give her an actual divination ability, and it'd make sense for her to be able to know...

Backtrack's kind of a slontze in some areas, but there's still a shred of decency in him that would feel too uncomfortable with that. Even at his most corrupted, he likes thinking of himself as a nice guy. So while, say, taking a peak at MV and Impact at their last bikini party would be okay in his book, he'd draw the line before watching them in the shower or in the throes of intimacy. ...Does that sound like a contrived excuse to keep the game in PG territory? Good, because that's what it is.

Really? Of all the ways he could be a creepy peeking Tom, he picks the way that doesn't make use of his retrocognitive power that would make him the most efficient creep in history? ... Never mind, that kind of sounds like him.

I like the idea of this! I'm not an expert on sociology, but it all looks cool to me. But then, you asked about filling the ecosystem, which is kind of my thing... Considering the Irish Elk has served as inspiration for you, have you considered filling the setting with other Ice Age - esque creatures? Huge mammoth-like beasts with tusks like Deinotherium, perhaps. Or take the giant Ice Age beaver, seen here on the far right: Or fill the setting with glyptodonts, like the big dome-shelled one you see in the picture above. Ice Age animals were very much like our own, but subtly, exotically different in a way that lends perfectly to a fantastic setting. Heck, even unicorns themselves may have been inspired by an extinct rhino originally... ever heard of Elasmotherium?
