I like Aonar's idea. Yes, it's dangerous, and yes, it puts some of the Shards in a risky place, but it could also give us a great advantage.

Dilaf's wife and the spell that went wrong
Bort replied to Crabtree's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Thanks I always assumed it was a more recent event, and that the events that led to Elantris falling were a direct result. -
I thought there was a WoB that suggested he had been on Roshar for about 50 years by the time he appears in WoR? Or was that just speculation on here?
-
Yeah, the UK Warbreaker cover wasn't done by someone who has read the book, I feel. I suppose, at a push, it could be Vivenna with her training sword.

My joke about the party was referring to the circle of people poking each other. And, as it's still day one, it would probably be best to vote for no-one rather than anyone. Since our circle poke is broken, Eolkin. Gramps is still poking me though, so I guess we can poke each other. Edit: Gramps. Ok, we can poke each other later instead.

Ok, so Eolkin was poking Gramps, but has apparently decided to poke elsewhere... Our poke circle is broken

Well, if Eolkin poked Gramps, and Gramps poked me, then I think it is only fair to complete the circle and poke Eolkin. What is this party at Keep Hobbes turning into?

Do we have WoB that Devotion and Dominion were shattered long before the Reod? -
The name, Seventeenth Shard, suggests that the organisation was formed in the early days after Adonalsium was shattered. My belief is that Hoid was a member of a company (of friends, warriors, merchants, spies, whatever really), but disagreed with them on how to proceed after seeing Adonalsium shattered. He went one way, and they all formed the Seventeenth Shard. Since then, Hoid has been going his own way, and the Seventeenth Shard another. Both have similar goals, but, I suspect, differing ideas on how to accomplish them.

Perhaps that is what he is doing with the extra essence of Ruin he has.

Bortin climbed out of the Pool, water running down him, but strangely leaving him dry. He glanced about the room, then froze. This is not the Well of Ascension, he thought. A few minutes later, he realized. Something must have gone wrong while he was travelling here. This was Harmony's Pool. Bortin was in the right place, just at the wrong time. Oops. Diving back into the Pool and retracing his steps, Bortin was soon climbing out of the Pool again, this time into the more familiar surroundings of the Lord Ruler's palace. He tapped his steelmind, and was out of there before anyone registered his presence. He didn't want to have to explain himself to the Lord Ruler. A mere few minutes later, Bortin stopped outside House Hobbes, his hand holding out an invitation to a guard. He had slowed when approaching the gates, so it didn't look like he had just appeared in front of them. The guard took the invitation, checked it, and nodded, stepping aside to allow Bortin to enter the keep. He handed off his longcoat to a Master Servant and entered the ballroom proper. Spotting Gerald divest himself of a simpering girl, Bortin stepped in his direction, a somber expression on his face. "We have a problem," he told the other Worldhopper in a quiet voice. "The Seventeenth Shard has been wiped out. There are also tales from Roshar. It seems Odium is freed. It doesn't take much imagination to consider that the murderer was most likely Odium."

I agree with you about Ruin and Preservation being neither good nor evil, but they are only two of the three positions that make up Harmony. Sazed is the guiding factor. Over time, he may become more like how you describe, but I think there are good indications in AoL that suggest Sazed's morality still considers good and evil. There is a conversation between Wax and Harmony towards the end of AoL. I think that's the one I'm thinking about. Unfortunately, I only have a paper copy, and it's at home, where I'm at work. I'm not 100% sure on this point, so if I am wrong, feel free to correct me, but didn't Wax become a lawman after leaving the city, and after meeting a certain Faceless Immortal who converted him and gave him his direct line to Harmony? It's possible that was Sazed's prompting in an almost non-interference way to address the concerns you bring up. I have no evidence to back this up, it is just opinion.

I'd like to see him do Szeth's story next, followed by Eshonai's, then Dalinar's in book 5 to bring them all together for when the Desolation really hits.

Syl said that one of her ancestors used to hunt Cryptics, so yeah, if they are hanging around Elhokar, then I could see them running off when Kaladin turned up with Syl. I would also point out that Elhokar sees them in mirrors, not reality, and when Shallan first saw them, they were in her sketches. Again, not in reality. I'm looking forward to seeing what Elhokar's reaction is when he meets Pattern.

I agree with Argent. SanderCon sounds better. If SanderCon does get off the ground, I would ask that you don't do what many of the major conventions I'd love to visit do. Don't keep it based in the US. For the first few years, sure, but then look at maybe holding one in Europe, so non-US fans can visit without spending thousands of dollars, pounds, euros, whatever on transport.

I always thought that Harmony acted as he did because he believed in the notion of free will. Giving the people free will, letting them get on with their lives, and when someone upsets the balance too much, nudge Wax to go and sort it out. This could prove interesting, as would Sazed send Wax in on the 'evil' side of a conflict if the 'good' side became too powerful? How do we know it is because of the opposing Shards? As for his god powers, the Preservation side to Sazed is already weaker than the Ruin side, as Preservation gave up of himself to give Scadrial's humanity sentience. This means he is already siphoning off some of Ruin's power somewhere. Either regrowing the Atium at the Pits of Hathsin, wherever they happen to be these days, or investing it elsewhere. My current opinion is that he is investing the power into Marsh. Hemalurgy is of Ruin, and Inquisitors are primarily constructed of hemalurgic spikes, so it makes sense to have Marsh, already strongly connected to Ruin's power, yet uncorrupted by it, to be the vessel for the spare power Ruin is producing. It could even be used to power his allomancy and feruchemy, so there is no hope of it 'pooling up', as it were, in Marsh's system.

According to WoB, there is something out there looking to destroy Adonalsium. My guess is that Hoid and his friends prevented this enemy from destroying Adonalsium, but in such a way that left Adonalsium shattered.

My belief on this is that in order to be Returned, it isn't about how you lived your life, it is about how you died. Lightsong, for example, was a scribe. He searched accounts ledgers for fraud. Not very exciting, not particularly brave, definitely not bold. He dies doing something bold, and Returns as Lightsong the Bold. Blushweaver is a little different if she changed her name from Blushweaver the Honest to the Beautiful. The Honest, because she died for being truthful. Others could include Brightvision the True, or Stillmark the Noble. Kindwinds the Honest is a bit of an exception. I guess he must have given up his Breath before Blushweaver Returned, unless they can have mutliple Gods of the same thing, so, two Gods of Honesty.

In no particular order... Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia series. Magician is still one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read, but it goes majorly downhill towards the end. Robin Hobb's Farseer books. When I say Farseer books, I mean all series set in the Six Duchies setting (including the Liveship Traders and Rain Wild Chronicles) as they each have their own story, but also tell a larger tale. The Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan. It has a dip in the middle of the series where the quality of books goes down in the eyes of many, but it is a necessary dip and both starts and finishes incredibly well. The Stormlight Archive. I know, everyone and their dogs love Brandon's stories too, but that doesn't change that he very quickly became my favourite author. I love everything about the Stormlight Archive books so far - Roshar is so different to our reality, yet Brandon really makes it shine, almost like I am actually there when reading it. Awesome characters, and yet another different magic system ('Different' as in not your typical fireball throwing guy in a large pointy hat kind of magic). Trudi Canavan's Black Magician series. This actually covers a total of 7 books, even though the Black Magician series was a trilogy. After the first trilogy was launched, a standalone prequel was released, as was a new trilogy set about 20 years after the first. Like Brandon, Trudi did something different with the magic system, and that is what made it stand out for me.

Angels Take Manhatten I kinda took as a comedy episode that isn't part of Dr Who canon, simply because the Statue of Liberty is a giant metal thing, ad not made of stone.

I'm a Dr Who fan too. My favourite Doctor has to be Matt Smith although I will admit that Peter Capaldi has had some brilliant lines ("Yes, she's my carer. She cares so I don't have to"). My favourite episode has to be The Doctor's Wife, as written by Neil Gaiman. The dialogue between Doctor and Tardis is just superb ("You never take me where I want to go." "No, but I always get you to where you need to be"). As for favourite bad guy, probably the Weeping Angels. Blink was another terrific episode. That said, the Angels and the Master are pretty much neck and neck. John Simms at the Master was just brilliant, and I permanently have that song in my head whenever I think about it ("I can't decide whether you should live or die..."). I do have to say though, I was disappointed by the story arc in the latest series. 'Missy' was just terrible, and horribly predictable.

I think most, if not all of mine have already been mentioned. In no particular order: Nakor - Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar series Arya Stark - George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series Kelsier - Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy Death, Lord Vetinari - Terry Pratchett's Discworld series Wedge Antilles, Mara Jade, Face Loran, 'Piggy', Wes Janson, Hobbie Klivian, Tycho Celchu - Various star Wars novels McVen - Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series GSV Sleeper Service - Iain M. Banks Excession Fitz, Fool, Nighteyes - Robin Hobb's Fitz/Fool series'. Asher - Karen Miller's Fisherman's Children series - This was not a great series of books, but still an excellent character.
