  1. I am become the Broken One, destroyer of worlds.

    1. Aether

      Aether

Congratulations on becoming a Broken One, by the way.

  2. *Cough cough* Actually, I don't think the Lashings are very similar to Allomancy, but that's a discussion for another day/thread. There is also an FAQ thread, which also has links to the Theoryland interview database and our wiki. We haven't gotten around to stickying it yet, so it's a bit hard to find if you don't know it exists.
  3. Source: Though the question remains as to whether or not the only "Hemalurgic potential" a fetus has is their human attributes/not-allomancy.
  4. You're right about Hemalurgy, so far as I recall, though I can't find a source at the moment. Chaos has a fairly well-regarded theory essentially to this effect about savants. There is a (compelling, I think) theory that Miles is a savant compounder (actually, why am I not espousing that? I've always liked that one. Fixed). So he's actually a "savant" for the metal "allomantically burned feruchemical gold". If that is the case, then it seems that a large influx of power geared towards some Feruchemical attribute can do the trick. Although that power is still fundamentally Preservation-aspected and external to Miles, so it could still be a separate case from what you're proposing... As to your theory, I'm leaning a bit toward "no" because of the whole balance thing. But actually... You know what? I think it could be possible. Who care's if it's "balanced"? Surging a million kilos of mass at one time should have some effect on you, and Nicrosil, Brass, and Bendalloy ferrings can very easily gain access to outside power sources to up the ante.
  5. I saw your unedited post right after I posted, so me, I guess.
  6. We don't know which Order on the chart they are, actually.
  7. Nice entrance, Gruntle. I agree that Eshonai is almost certainly The Explorer, and I'm leaning towards Dalinar for Bondsmith.
  8. I think we should at least go to 512, though 1,024 is the real "max" in my mind.
  9. What you see is what we have. We didn't want to have admins/mods/me generating the questions and answers because of laziness/applicability: What we think is "obvious" or in need of clarification is likely quite different from what the average Sharder does. So any questions/answers you can think of woudl be appreciated.
  10. *More Elantris Spoilers*
  11. I apologize for not responding earlier, but I tend to feel a compulsion to link to citations whenever I answer such questions, and didn't have the time. Kelsier holding Preservation for a bit is mostly mentioned in annotations and interviews and stuff, though it's hinted at in the last book. Here's some links: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#10 http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=680#26 http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=944#7 They do do essentially the same thing, "because with the unifying theory of magic there's a certain number of things that magic can do, and there's a lot of different ones, but when they get similar they tend to work in the same way." Same with how a lot of healing in the Cosmere is going to end up looking like Feruchemical Gold. (*TES Spoilers*) As for Hoid naturally having all of the powers: I don't think so. It would be a bit less than "fair" if that were the case, and Brandon has implied that these magics didn't exist pre-shattering. So far as technology goes, here's the breakdown: Alloy of Law has technology roughly equivalent to the early 1900's, while the second Mistborn trilogy will be late 1980's and the third will be straight-up scifi. No worries, everyone goes through a bit of a "teething phase" when they first start out. We really need to work on our new-Sharder-initiation aids...
  12. Leras definitely messed with snapping (at least mist-snapping) a bit. As I said earlier in the thread, Cadmium/Bendalloy mistings were not snapped by the mistsickness.
  13. We got some help on other threads, but just not this one. It's a bit odd, I'll admit.
  14. Did someone say FORMS!?!? Actually, I think I may go the FeatherWriter-route and just start upvoting anyone who mentions them for a bit.
  15. Motion: That theFallGuy's avatar be changed to something obnoxious, that we may know and loathe him on sight.
  16. Thanks for answering that one, Weiry. I hadn't relished the thought of doing it myself. @Levian Thanks for your curiosity. As to your edited question, I don't believe we know, though I doubt it myself.
  17. I'm afraid of ghostly, immaterial, and quite likely unreal things too. (P.S. Unless something's actually moved forward on that front recently?)
  18. Intent's interaction with Hemalurgy may start and end at "I intend to perform Hemalurgy", though. I don't think that Hemalurgic experimentation with the metals would have worked out as well as it did (since apparently there was at least some experimentation, with Atium spikes) if you needed to know/intend what powers you were going to steal in the first place.
  19. Sorry, hit downvote on my phone by accident. Could I please get an offset to set him back to neutral? EDIT: Thanks.
  20. It was my impression that only the actual lighting of the fire resulted in blinding/confusion for shades: Otherwise, carrying a torch around would be a nearly necessary plan at all times in the Forest, as even if you broke one of the other two Rules you'd be a bit protected from immediate attack. So, by my reading of the story, someone who ran while carrying a (safely-lit) torch would be just as doomed as someone who ran with a jar of glowpaste. (Tangent: Also, fluorescence and the use of UV light in a fantasy story? Yes please. ) --- As to the "new" fire being "new", let's look at that. From this story, I gather that a Rothfuss-style "sympathy" magic would be able to work quite well—at least to some extent—in the cosmere. For instance, a coal taken from a fire should give you some connection to that fire. To get all proclaim-y: Yes, a "new" fire is "new", but it is at the same time the same as the fire it was born from. Only when building a fire out of naught, creating light and life where once there was none, is a truly new fire created, without any lineage or connection to the fires of old. *Minute WoK Spoilers* It may bear looking into this in relation to Syl's "all spren are, in a sense, virtually the same individual" statement.
  21. I just plugged it into an anagram-solver, and no dice, so if it is an anagram then it's likely cosmere- or Roshar-specific.
  22. As to fire, I have a rudimentary proto-theory: It's the creation of a fire that upsets the shades, right? You can grow or split or share a single already-created fire as much as you like, but kindling a new one is what upsets and dazzles them. So I'd posit that fire coming into being as a new "object", in some Cognitive sense, is what is so upsetting to them. @Blind I think you're starting off on the wrong foot here. We know that there aren't any predators in the forest, almost certainly because they get killed off when they draw animal blood. Recall that Silence was concerned that the Fort bounty hunters would accidentally spill each-other's blood when swarmed by shades, so it seems that accidental bloodletting is definitely a concern. Same with when Sebruki almost accidentally drew Silence's blood when dropping the crossbow: Silence was concerned. I think the other Rules also "infuriate" shades to some extent: they seem to "activate" when the appropriate rule is broken, not just drift quickly towards the area/person who did it.
  23. I'm pondering... Don't expect any massive revelations, I don't think, but some initial thoughts I haven't really organized or permuted yet: -Nice thought on the veins/sentience angle. I can buy that. -As for the Rules, I'm thinking on those. -One thing I noted for the withering is that silver used to counteract it is affected in exactly the way that silver that touches a shade is: it blackens. That suggests rather heavily that the silver "draws out" something shady (ha, pun ) from the injury. More on this later, I think...
