  1. One typically runs before the storm to weather it, Blackwood. Running straight into one is the more suicidal course.
  2. Interesting. I haven't seen that WoB: mind dropping a link? Also, if we have confirmation that it's one the Heralds that went back, I think it almost has to have been Nalan. He's Infusing in the Lift interlude and clearly taking an interest in world events these days.
  3. Also I'd like to note that the Diagram epigraph from chapter 82 implies that all the Rattles are precognitive in nature, as opposed to the chance that some of them were from the past or the like. EDIT: Actually, it's not definite. It could just mean that, among the other things Moelach's touch provides, precognition (the most important thing for super!Taravangian) is one.
  4. But really not that much, if anyone's worried. I haven't had to put much effort into it and I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen (at least to my knowledge) references to unpublished works over the last few years.
  5. Thanks for nailing that down, Peter. Also, as a general comment, I'd just like to thank you for being so active on the boards these last few weeks. I don't doubt that you've managed to avert some disastrously ill-informed turns of conversation and/or guide us the right way on some interesting subjects.

  7. Yeah, the scars. Normally I'd have talked your ear off about Cognitive Aspects and perception and whatnot, but then The Lopen had to go and grow his arm back. I've discussed this, but there are a few options. 0) The Lopen is really stubborn and actually still conceives of himself as 2-armed. Really stubborn. That still leaves Renarin, but it allows us to potentially ignore his case, if he's really a "squire" Windrunner who by all rights shouldn't have Regrowth. 1) Stormlight (at least for Radiants) is akin to Divine Breath in how it heals, managing to get outside the Cognitive definitions that other healing depends on and access something Spiritual. That still leaves Kaladin's scar's as weird, as I can buy them being a part of his self-image but not them being a part of his ideal self. 2) Regrowth allows for "specialized" healing that willfully violates the normal rules. My primary concern here is Renarin's eyesight, since bad eyes is actually the archetypal "magical healing can't normally fix that" example. He's likely Order 5, with access to Regrowth, so he'd be good there. There's still possibly the question of Lopen, but this gives us an out for why "normal" Stormlight healing oughtn't to heal chronic conditions.
  8. What about your own translation of the Thaylen sea chart, Harakeke? Doesn't that have longitudinal markers that we could extrapolate from?
  9. Be sure to remember that 10 should probably be a singular character.
  10. Thanks for the info, Burrito. And you're quite right that Hoid could have been trying to use other metals as well. It's just that the rather hurried way he did it suggested "I've gotta double-check that reading" to me.
  11. Yes, I agree that it's quite clear that he's putting in Allomantic metals. Probably Bronze to better detect Shallan's Surgebinding. We know that he didn't burn the bead (storm it, can't find the source), so it seems that he must have gotten Allomancy a different way. Peter basically confirmed that Hoid was putting in metals, btw. EDIT: Found it! Source:
  12. It was? All I can recall is that there was one several decades before the events of the book. It's not like we had to suffer through it.
  13. Yeah, I was a bit like "huh, captivityspren" when I first saw them, followed by "Axies'd be annoyed that he didn't see that".
  14. I would not be happy if Brandon changed his books for no better reason than a knee-jerk (if historically justified ) hatred of love-triangles by his readers. Yes, they usually go poorly, but it's theoretically possible to do one well, and I wouldn't want fear of "we told you not to do that!" to be what stopped Brandon from trying.
  15. I'd assumed that was Taravangian.
  16. Vasher is Zahel. WoP on this. Also, I'm fairly sure this story happens afterwards, though I'm not up on my timeline-fu.
  17. A decent enough wild theory, I'd say. Many think that Mraize is likely a worldhopper.
  18. Mistake: This is a public poll, Gaussian. Feather will personally hunt down and write essays to anyone who doesn't select "Renarin". The secret ballot exists for a reason.
  19. Ah, yet another reason (beyond the WoB we have ) to guess that Zahel == Vasher
  20. Very interesting. Coincidentally, all those palindromes sum to relatively small numbers: [3, 8, 2, 5, 2, 2, 2, 7, 1, 2, 4, 9, 7, 2, 3, 2, 4, 1, 0, 2, 7, 9, 4, 0, 3, 2, 9, 3, 8, 8, 3, 3, 0, 7, 7, 4, 2, 5, 9, 3, 4, 1, 0, 9, 8, 4, 9, 1, 4, 9, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 5, 1, 2, 7, 2, 5, 11, 0, 3, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 10, 2, 12, 4, 17, 5, 3, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 2, 9, 7, 2, 1, 0, 6, 1, 5, 3, 4] EDIT: On reflection, I don't think this is the right track. Recall that no 0 appears without a 1, so any analysis should probably consider the sequence "10" to be a single character.
  21. I doubt that the other spren are retrievable. Note this line from Pattern:
  22. There's a rather full discussion on this topic. (These days it's a good tip to do a quick word-search before posting a new thread, due to the massive turnover).
  23. Even with that mountain range, I doubt they're that safe. Compare that relatively small range to the massive one to the East, and that after the storm's been broken by a continent and quite a few other mountain ranges. It doesn't seem that the land in the lee of the Horneater peaks, for instance, is sheltered overmuch from the storms.
  24. You're assuming (perhaps quite rightly, but still assuming) that the Everstorm "recharges" at some point over the ocean, rather than perhaps over the place it was first born (the Shattered Plains), the Origin or some other location. Either way I agree that at least parts of Shinovar are not going to have a very fun time of it.
  25. What I'd like to see (for references sake) is an updated chart ala karaokeang's with all the proper labels.
