I now officially want a clear definition of the term "Invest". Whatever my conception of it is, it is woefully out of date. The decades thing is quite interesting. We need to meditate on this, I think.
-
Hey Chachel, good to have you here! I'm Eric, the... the guy who does a lot of stuff. You'll see me around quite a bit. I'm excited to see you join our little community of Brandonites
-
That does indeed seem to be the case. It kind of baffles me, too, but whatever works, I suppose.
-
This theory has been confirmed by Brandon to be false. So, please remove this from any Espoused Theories list. Now we need a better explanation for why Shards seem to just refer to themselves as their Shard name...
-
Thanks for doing that, Thorondir. Would you mind if I slapped that up on the main page (when I get a chance)? The rest of my post is a response to these, so I'll put it in spoiler tags, just in case.
-
I like those questions. Good choices. But obviously I want to know Aona's Shard name (I'll live without it)
-
Hey Jay! Good to have you here My character is in progress, haha.

You do lose things, but you don't become the equivalent of a mistwraith. I do not think we can say that sentient beings hold Splinters, as Brandon says we haven't seen Splinters on Scadrial. I mean, I agree with what you are saying, but it's imprecise to call them "Splinters". I don't think the later generations of kandra became the humans they once did. There's not much evidence for that, at least. Mistwraiths breed true, actually, so the later generations of mistwraiths were never really humans, so this can't be always right. Maybe the specific mistwraiths who were humans initially can regain their memories, but certainly many mistwraiths where this would not be the case. The First Generation are a special case since they were transferred directly to kandra. They were never really mistwraiths. With the mistwraiths that were definitely not human, they actually fit this theory very well. They are not sentient, and then when you have a spike charged with that fragment of Preservation in humans going into the mistwraith. Bam, then they are sentient kandra. You, sir, get an upvote for that. I don't think we know enough of the mechanics on Sel to accurately say how it is relevant for this theory. I'm not totally sure that the Dahkor are actually channeling the Dor. Maybe they are, maybe they are channeling something else and Raoden merely interprets it as the Dor.

I'm not even sure what I'm talking about with the disk space. I just checked Cpanel on the bottom left--there's a link to specific usage and apparently that one was being weird. I'm just as confused as you. I would think that our bandwidth would only go up with time, and since MediaLayer's second tier plan is the same price as Steadfast's second plan, it may be smarter to go with Steadfast. And with ShardCast I'm sure our usage would be >10GB regularly. Stupid media taking up space!

Yeah, I remember when I made this topic that I dug through your tweets to find steadfast.net That may be a bit too advanced (or expensive) for our needs but I guess we will see. I need to talk with Josh, Mi'ch, and the other admins about it. My personal opinion is that we need to pay what we need to to provide awesome services for the fans. (Maybe we just need a donate bar XD) I'm checking our bandwidth usage and in March we did 10GB of bandwidth. Apparently in October we did 15GB of bandwidth, but I guess that makes sense because of the interview going up. So at least from that perspective, steadfast's VPS seems like a better deal. I don't know how much memory or whatever we use now. I just checked cpanel and it said Disk /dev/sda8 (/home) is at 83% with a little warning symbol, so clearly we are using our server's capabilities up (at least, at the time I'm checking it now, this is the case). We definitely need to discuss more with everyone about where we should go from here. If we have more media, like our eventual ShardCast, I think we will need significantly more bandwidth than 10GB of medialayer. Though I really like what medialayer is offering. VPS may be the best bet.

Awesome, I'm glad we'll have a rep there! If you write up a report of it I'll slap it up on the homepage. My biggest question is what Aona's Shard name is. Brandon said via Twitter that it's a synonym of love or compassion, but those aren't the right ones. So, ask: "Is Aona's Shard name Devotion, Benevolence, Empathy, or Charity?" I think that about covers our potential candidates. This one is of top importance. You could also ask if Shards are categorized in groups of four, similar to Allomantic metals. The Ultimate List of Questions For Brandon thread has a bunch more (over a hundred of them), but for pure cosmere questions, those are key. Also, I really need to update that topic...

I really like the currency system. Good job!

Yeah, that's what I had to ask Mosh about, but as it turns out, this continent was completely independent of the Xan and those developments. So it's forbidden on Alteiryn, but this continent is far across the sea. So that should horrify the Alteirans quite nicely.
-
Oh man, this continent I'm making is awesome. I've been talking a lot with Mosh about the history and stuff... a lot of the Xanethi history doesn't apply. So, there is a race of sapient automatons. You should be scared of the Veresi military.
-
No, you're completely right. We were just discussing why giving up Breath doesn't remove sentience. This theory is simple, yet elegant. That's why it's so good.

I can't remember a good counterexample offhand that I disagreed. Well, I suppose Black Swan... I agreed with the positive points about it, but it was almost too weird for me to recommend. When critics say that the story is bad, though, I tend to agree with them. We'll see (and I will, because I want to know how bad it is). I would like to announce that I am now in Portland for a week! I would also like to announce that my coding project on 17S has been finished! It's pretty slick, if I do say so myself. And I do.
-
I've decided to slightly change the Empire and continent names, because they don't fit as well anymore. They are now the Verasi.
-
I blame Pirates of the Caribbean 4. The world didn't end when Camping said it was going to, but a Pirates sequel came out that weekend. That's kind of like the end of the world. (In all seriousness, it has a high IMDB rating, and Howard liked it. I'm hopeful I will enjoy it, but judging by the Rotten Tomatoes rating, I will probably have a lot of problems with the movie)
-
My character now has a proper name. He is Darshan Sevra. He's the crown prince of the Verani Empire, a nation which lies on the continent of Saraea, which is quite a distance from Alteiryn. Oh, and he holds a sword named Rajendra which is an artifact that creates illusions. It took a freaking long time to name this stuff.

So I've had an exciting time since I logged off from IM yesterday. First, my tablet wouldn't boot. Plugging it into the charger didn't do anything, either, so it wasn't the charger's fault. It also wasn't the cord's fault, since the charger charged the tablet dock just fine. So, after a while of extreme panicking, my brother said that his Xoom has a reset button if you hold down the power button and the volume buttons. So I did that. Then I just held down the power button for a minute. Magically, it came back, and everything was normal. (Except my Gmail widget wasn't on the main screen anymore. ??? ) That was an exciting, terrifying adventure, given that I spent way too much time on that, and I had to get up at 5:30am for work. And after work, I'm starting my drive to Portland. Yeah, ouch. I was a little stressed. So today, I'm at work. I'm doing some very exciting things for the Mistborn RP. The differences should be cosmetic to you all once I get it going. Anyways, on my project, I edited a template file and the forum wouldn't render. Major PHP error, apparently. I changed back the template file, but the error was still there. Mysterious. I got it taken care of now, thankfully, and the MBI upgrades can go forward. I just can't edit the Global Template via the Admin interface, or else it dies. Sigh. Bizarre things.

To answer my own question, #4 would definitely fail. Allomantic tin is not the same as Feruchemical tin, for example. Numbers mine. 1. That depends how small the metal is, I would guess. One can't charge the tiny bits of metal in your body, but Sazed could tap the ring he ate. If he can tap it, he should be able to store it. 2 and 3. Maybe. I mean, Feruchemists can select which metal they draw upon. 4. Are you referring to #4 here? 5. I always sort of modeled a Feruchemical charge like a fluid as well. The charge is evenly distributed throughout the metal, and then (excuse the pun), you tap it But take a look down below. I mean, I think I know what you mean, but I want to be sure. I seem to recall that it does depend on the size of the metal, but I do not have a citation. Though Sazed's small rings did hold less of a charge, so I think it's safe to assume that for this conversation. I don't know if the size matters that much, though. Most Allomancers just kept eating flakes of metals. If I have a huge bracer, that would take a long time to burn through. I like the idea of that limit on the multiplier. Do I need to explicitly ingest the metal in order to burn it, or can I simply burn the bracers on my arms? If I can burn the bracer's metal, then there would be enough metal to continually to do #3 endlessly. We don't explicitly know from what the Lord Ruler did, but remember, one of his other "amazing" tricks was his extreme healing. So he got flayed, but he managed to perform #1 with his goldmind to save himself. I would imagine he wouldn't have been able to prepare enough to ingest the goldmind. That means he probably just burned his bracer. Lemme back up again for a second and ask another pedantic question. I'm focusing on #3 here. In that, we are burning a metal as we are storing into it. But I think #1 involves something slightly different. Sazed said that the Feruchemy acted like a new Allomantic metal. Vin reached out to the Feruchemical reserve of energy and burned that. So, this means that the Canonical Trick involves reaching out to the Feruchemical store, which happens to be on the metal. Then you can burn it. So, okay, this sounds like a silly distinction, but it really isn't. It suggests that I can't just burn the metal, willy-nilly, but that I have to focus upon the Feruchemical charge. If that is the case, #3 would not work. Therefore, I now define: 5. Revised Simultaneous Store and Burn. The Twinborn stores a Feruchemical property into the metalmind. Then, a very slight delay later, the Twinborn focuses upon the Feruchemical charge he is creating, and burns it. Pretty much the same crap, but slightly different. This is related to what Joe asked in his fifth point, in a roundabout way. If #5 is valid--and not #3--then what Joe is saying wouldn't work. In Joe's example, the Allomancer would just be burning the metal, and not getting the Feruchemical boost, so to speak. The Feruchemy is like its own Allomantic metal. When you do the Canonical Trick with, say, bronze, you aren't getting the Allomantic effect, you're just getting a supercharged Feruchemy. That brings up another question, if you must focus on the Feruchemical charge: what happens if I have a metalmind that is fully charged, and I start to Allomantically burn it? I'm not focusing on the Feruchemical charge, so in this model, you're just getting the normal Allomantic effect. What happens to the charge? I'm thinking the Feruchemical charge just vanishes away, but this is an important thing to think about. I wonder how quickly you can store Feruchemy. Can you vary the speed that you store it? Sazed's storing of weight in MB2 suggests that you could store a lot of weight at once, and then later, slow it down. EDIT: (for Silus's post) Ah, okay. I would think that the Allomantic and Feruchemical effects are incompatible, as I said way at the top in #4. They are different abilities. The only Allomantic ability that is close to the Feruchemical one is pewter, but Allomantic pewter has the addition of increased balance. Feruchemical pewter doesn't do that. Also, Allomantic pewter does not increase muscle size, whereas Feruchemical pewter does. I'd say even in this case, the powers are distinct.

Spoke with Mosh a bit about my character idea, and it's coming along nicely. You'll indeed get an antagonist from me after all.
-
Okay, I think I know why I am so dang confused. Let's back up a lot. No, I... was not talking about this. It seems that we are thinking of a lot of different magic implications, so let's just go ahead and define them. This way everyone is on the same page. 1. The Canonical Allomancy-Feruchemy Trick. You store a property in the metalmind, then later, you burn the metalmind, thus giving you a net gain of said Feruchemical property. The Lord Ruler did this. He spent time aged, storing that power in his atiummind. Then he burns the atiummind for a big gain of youth. 2. Storing the Excess Power from the Canonical Allomancy-Feruchemy Trick. This is part two of the Canonical Allomancy-Feruchemy trick. That big burst of the Feruchemical property is quite a lot. Now, the Allomancer-Feruchemist Twinborn stores the Feruchemical property into the metalmind. So, let's say the Lord Ruler did this with pewter and a pewtermind. Let's say he stored three units of youth in. He burned that metalmind, and so maybe he got twenty units of youth in output from the Allomancy. This youth now goes inside his body, as if he tapped the metalmind. He then stores the twenty units of youth in another atiummind. 3. Chaos's Interpretation of the Original Question - Simultaneously Storing and Burning This is what I thought Emeralis's question was to begin with. You are storing a Feruchemical property in your metalmind, while simultaneously burning that metal via Allomancy. So, I'm giving strength to my pewtermind at a rate of 2x, but I am also burning the pewter. I was under the impression of, does this work? Would you automatically get a net gain of the Feruchemical property, like #1? 4. Zayde's Interpretation of Something I said This involves burning, say, pewter, and then I think you store the strength you got from Allomancy into a pewtermind. Did I pretty much sum up everything? I'll wait to analyze these once we agree on what the crap we are talking about in the first place.
