1. Hi guys, With the release of Shadows of Self and the Elantris Anniversary edition, I wanted to remind you about spoiler policies. 1. No spoilers in topic titles! I mean it. Not only will we be removing said spoilers, we will be extremely upset if you do this in Cosmere Theories, Shadows of Self spoiler board, or Elantris. Keep topic titles vague! 2. If you're making spoiler topics in Cosmere Theories or the Elantris board, make sure the topic title explicitly has "Spoilers" in it. I like using [spoilers] for that. (This isn't necessary for Shadows of Self, as you can assume there are spoilers there.) 3. If the topic is clearly marked with spoilers, spoilers are allowed inside topics in the Shadows of Self board, Elantris, and Cosmere Theories without the spoiler tags, that is, without

However, if you are adding information to an older thread that does not have [spoilers] in the topic title, make sure you use these spoiler tags! For Cosmere Theories, keep Shadows spoilers marked through the release of Bands. (Usually Cosmere Theories has a much shorter turn-around, but be nice, because some will just wait to read Shadows until Bands comes out.) 4. If you are posting in General Brandon Discussion, always use the spoiler tags in the post themselves. That forum is basically a spoiler free zone.
2. This is a silly game that artificially inflated post counts, which I am also strongly against. This isn't even a fun game. So a mod did post, and is locking this
3. Um, I'm not opposed to finding the posts of Alaxel, but they are difficult to find as his old accounts were deleted. (Deleting spambots sometimes does that.) Honestly, I don't particularly have the motivation to go find them... But sometime, yeah, I'll look into it.
4. Okay, I would just like to say that while a subforum could theoretically be a thing that could happen, trying to do that by saying "Hey guys we need to clutter the board!" is not really a way that you're going to engender sympathy. Like really? Come on. Don't be like that. It could happen eventually, but come on. Maybe I am merely annoyed from the way you said that, but I think my annoyance is justified. Read that sentence again.
5. I agree and was actually going to make a post about it this weekend. It made sense a while ago but on further consideration, they will be in separate boards with the obvious caveat that there will be spoilers for Shadows in the Bands forum.
6. That's really good but the font needs to be Impact with a border around it. Then you have it meme-ready This should be interesting. Who knows what it will be.
7. clyguy, Information from Dragonsteel Prime is not publicly available and is not to be posted about or used in theoretical discussion. There will be boards for more freely available material like White Sand but this will not be the case with Dragonsteel. Unreleased stuff is not permitted to be posted. So we have hidden your post. Also, holy crap, talk about spoilers. Watch yourself.
8. It really does make no sense. I mean the Frosted Flakes account, on its own merits, would not have been an auto-ban, but it was him and hey, multiple accounts are still against the rules, so we took care of that one. We suspected him for a while.
9. Yep, seriously. Let me rephrase: we wanted him to respect others. Instead of him following the rules and agreeing to our 30-day suspension for his initial jerkiness, he made other accounts, which said far more disrespectful things than when he started. Very mean things. So basically, we were reasonable in wanting him to respect others, but apparently in his mind that was "too far," and thus he believes to have been wronged. Thus, he no longer cares about the rules, or reason, or anything. He is a warped person. Major victim complex. "What? Everyone is telling me I'm a jerk. Screw them, the world is out to get me and I'm right!"
10. On the new version (coming soon™), you'll be able to reverse it and it's much better! Good luck!! I was scared too, when I started, but I really love driving now. My good news is that we finally weeded out Alaxel (Frosted Flakes), again. If you ever see someone who is being really misogynistic and generally a jerk... Well, you should PM admins anyway for people being jerks, but especially if you think he is Alaxel. Hilariously, this man who is all about self-betterment (but is actually a jerk) thinks we have wronged him by banning his initial account for wanting him to respect others. So he's continually tried to make new accounts to do so. I'm sure he'll get bored eventually, one of these years. In the meantime, keep your eyes open.
11. That interview is crazy and I can't believe I'd never seen it before today. So much cool stuff in that short interview.
12. He had to have been including Warbreaker. In a later Q&A, the B&N one, Brandon confirmed that the Voice in Warbreaker was a Shard. I think the book being free is sufficient to say "you've seen this Shard." The book was done, after all. So the first two are Endowment and Devotion for direct interaction. I am very certain of this. The "One is a tough call. You've never met the Shard itself, but you've seen its power" is Dominion. It's a tough call because there are Skaze, the Dor, and Dakhor magics. But it is distinctly different because we haven't interacted with what is left of the Shard, namely some pool. "The other one you have not met directly, but have seen its influence" is definitely Odium. This is distinct from the last quote in that we have seen Dominion's power, but Odium did not Invest himself onto Sel. We see the results of what he did on Sel, but never his power or Odium himself. I don't think there's anything to glean here. Warbreaker was discussed for quite some time before 2009, and was common knowledge at the time of that particular forum Q&A. This was partially why Hoid was discovered in the first place, because Hoid's place in Warbreaker was so obvious. So while this looks incongruous, if you were in TWG at the time... it was clear what was happening and the context of theoretical knowledge at the time. I was there!
13. Yeah, that is super misleading. It is set on Sel but is a very short, elegant work, and is not really the standard epic fantasy scope of Brandon's adult works. I'm very sad this happened to you. Emperor's Soul is phenomenal, but the way you like a story has a lot to do with expectations. If you expect the Era 2 Mistborn books to have that huge epic scope, you're always going to be upset that they are smaller thrillers. The real sequel to Elantris, that has characters that were in the first one, will come eventually. Apparently, before the Era 3 Mistborn books (the modern ones). But that will probably be after SA5. I'm sorry that hurt your expectations and opinion of the book. I'd be pissed too. But I am more sad that you won't think that TES is as awesome as I do. I love that book. I think it's a highlight of Brandon's writing.
14. For a minute I thought you were talking about the TSA, as in, the people at the airport. I'm so not used to seeing "TSA" as opposed to "SA" for Stormlight Archive. Cool, though! EDIT: Also, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to decapitalize the title a bit.
15. Well, I can talk to a few people about it that are also listed in the Acknowledgements
16. Hey Smokestone, you may want to call the BYU bookstore to resolve the issue directly.
17. I do love RAFOing. It is a distinct pleasure. So, of course, RAFO
18. It is so fun to watch you all theorize <3 Heh heh heh heh...
19. Not a concern. Good balance between humor and drama.
20. I'm not going to comment much on this, but the review said, "The worldbuilding of Scadrial is important to events, and for you cosmere buffs, there will be plenty for you to love here." I think that answers #1 fairly well. I'm going to be very strict about answering questions, though. You're welcome to ask them, but I probably won't say much. After all, the fun in reading is often seeing something unexpected. This may or may not be relevant to your questions here, but if something were to be unexpected, I wouldn't reveal it, and if something seems obvious, I also wouldn't reveal that either. That's why the review is generally nonspecific. It's a tough line to walk.
21. Shadows of Self is the latest Mistborn novel and the sequel to The Alloy of Law, which came out all the way back in 2011. It's been a crazy long time. There's been plenty of Brandon Sanderson to read since then, but my first love is Mistborn, so I've yearned for this for... well, four years. Fortunately, it's fantastic. If you liked The Alloy of Law--particularly the idea of an urban fantasy thriller set in the Mistborn world--you'll love Shadows of Self. This time, Wax and Wayne continue their hunt for the Set, the shadowy organization seen in The Alloy of Law. Then, the murder of a huge portion of Elendel's criminal elite--including the governor's brother--pushes Wax onto the case, where he discovers that the person responsible is insanely dangerous. They need to find out what this person's plans are, before Elendel collapses in on itself. It's hard for me to talk about Shadows without comparing it to The Alloy of Law. Alloy was a pretty good urban/western fantasy thriller. Not fantastic, but the nostalgia of the Mistborn world made it quite good. For a standalone, though, the ending was unfulfilling. Alloy demanded a sequel, and now that we finally get it, it is so very satisfying. Shadows is quite similar to Alloy in style. They are both set in Elendel, both have a particular "case" to focus them, and are urban fantasy novels. For this reason I often compare these books to the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher, the gold standard of urban fantasy. Shadows takes the good elements of Alloy and makes them better, while cutting out some of the flaws that Alloy has. The result is a novel that is as awesome as Dresden books. I don't think it's hard to see why Shadows turned out better than Alloy, and it comes down to what Brandon does best: planning. Alloy was a short story that turned into a novel and it showed. In the time between writing Alloy and Shadows, Brandon fully planned out what he’s going to do with this time period. No longer are the Wax and Wayne novels only a bridge between the fantasy Mistborn trilogy and the 1980s Mistborn trilogy. With this extra planning, the Alloy era has become important to the world of Scadrial. While Shadows is still about the length of Alloy of Law (making it about half of the length of the books in the original trilogy), there’s a feeling of a grand design that Alloy didn’t really have, while maintaining the fast pace that Alloy set. Brandon knows with razor-sharp focus what this era of novels are supposed to be doing in the grand scheme of everything now. And boy, Shadows does it so well. I've always been a reader who loves a tightly crafted plot. It's one of the reasons I love Brandon’s novels. Well, Shadows not only has a tighter plot, but also a more interesting one than Alloy. The worldbuilding of Scadrial is important to events, and for you cosmere buffs, there will be plenty for you to love here. And Shadows' villain is terrifying for so many reasons that make Miles Dagouter look tame by comparison. One thing with Alloy and Shadows is that, like many other of Brandon's novels, there are multiple viewpoints. A lot of urban fantasy is written in a single first person viewpoints--like Dresden--and I felt that in Alloy, though it was fun to be in multiple characters' heads, it didn't make that book incredible. Not so with Shadows. Multiple viewpoints really enhances the book, and raises the overall tension. This tension is key, because it raises Shadows from being just another case file to something... more. Something legitimately awesome. Surprisingly, one way Shadows raises the tension is through politics. Sometimes Brandon goes way too in-depth of political intrigue, like with Elantris. Considering how bad politics can be in a story (cough, Star Wars prequels, cough), you realize how well Shadows does it. The political intrigue truly heightens the threat level. It's never distracting, and is always important. Elendel is in serious danger, so it makes sense that it is so essential to the plot. As much as I love plot, the soul of stories are the characters, and all the characters you love from Alloy have progressed in reasonable ways, with new levels of depth. Wax and his relationships advance in unexpected, but interesting, fashions. Wayne, hilarious as always, has a ton of depth that I did not expect. Marasi also really comes into her own. And speaking of Marasi, I've often seen people who dislike either Marasi or Steris. After Shadows, I've loved both. You really do need to read Alloy before Shadows, as there is critical character depth you'd miss without it, but Shadows is such a good sequel. It's crazy to think that before Words of Radiance, Brandon had only written one other epic fantasy sequel in his own worlds: The Well of Ascension. In my opinion, that’s the weakest book of the original trilogy, and Brandon's learned so much about writing sequels since then. Brandon takes the best of the series' predecessors and makes the sequels even better than one could hope. Shadows is faster paced, better plotted, and its worldbuilding more important and grander than Alloy. The characters advance in great ways, and the multiple viewpoints enhance this book substantially. Really, Shadows of Self perfects the formula of Alloy in every way, and is a truly wonderful novel because of it. Score: 17 metals out of 16. Note: Brandon actually used to call the original trilogy and the 1980s trilogy as the "first Mistborn trilogy" and "second Mistborn trilogy," with a third science fiction trilogy. Alloy didn't really have a place. Now, the different time periods are called eras, so the first trilogy is Era 1, and Alloy and Shadows are Era 2, with Era 3 and 4 set to be published in the future. Early copy provided by Dragonsteel Entertainment. Posted with their permission. Shadows of Self comes out on October 6th, 2015.
