Shardcast: "Who Needs Rails?" - Idaho Falls Holiday Words of Brandon

Chaos

We did it, everyone. It's the last Words of Brandon episode for (hopefully) a long time, with the holiday 2018 Idaho Falls Words of Brandon. Behold my cohosts work really hard at derailing my best efforts at getting on task, from talking about Hoid's tramp stamp, and so, so much more. Where we're going, we don't need rails, I guess. You don't know what I do for mankind. Without me, you've doomed yourself to Argent stories...

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Grace (thegatorgirl).

Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]. See you next week!

I share @WeiryWriters incredulity with the Jezrien “extra dead” designation. Not so much for what was said at the signing, but Ash says “they’ve killed gums somehow” and passes out. Which makes it seem like he’s gone for good.

He’s trapped in a gem is a little different. I’m fine with not being in the beyond. I would not mind getting more of him in some form later.

What i had thought was the knife yanked out the special investiture that kept them tethered to this cycle.

They are Cognitive Shadows and that could take so many different forms, but in some we know of there is a special bit that is keeping them around.

A Returned can have 900 million breaths, but if a Shard made a special knife that sucked out their one Divine Breath it’s all over.

I thought maybe the knife took out whatever special bit honor gave them that keeps them reincarnating on Braize in the same bodies and the rest of his soul went Beyond.

It’s fine that it didn’t. I’m interested to see where it goes.

What I think is interesting is that this was the best Odium could come up with. A Shard is plenty powerful enough to destroy a cognitive shadow of it wants normally.  Odium can splinter Honor, but he can’t take out the Heralds.

I mean, we kind of knew this because the Heralds would have been obliterated a long time ago if Odium could do it.

Why, tho? Maybe the Oathpact is doing it. After all the idea was for the Heralds to hang out with the Fused in Odiums’s backyard forever. Honor would have to be confident Odium couldn’t shred their investiture beyond recognition and disperse it.

What makes me think it’s not the Oathpact or not just it, is that Honor and Cultivation had no answer for the Fused. From what we know Ishar had the idea for the Oathpact, recruited the others and they went to Honor saying  “we’ll take care of it”

Seems like there is an agreement between the Shards that keeps them from permanently destroying each other’s all-star team, if you will.

Probably part of the larger situation where Honor and Cultivation’s powers are keeping Odium bound to the system “AS ODIUM IS SEALED BY THE POWERS OF HONOR AND CULTIVATION” OB Ch. 38

long post, but your podcast got me thinking which is why I love it!

Never has a title been more fitting. I laughed so hard for the first 10 minutes.

Also, since Eric asked: I love the WoB episodes.

I also like the WoB episodes, and there actually are more, since the Atlanta signing wasn't transcribed until after episode three or something, and its WoBs (including mine) didn't get analyzed.

Also, I am feeling really smug because I got Oroden almost immediately after the clue 5 reveal.

I really enjoy the WoB episodes! I am looking forward to new topics though!

Long before I did much scouring of the internet I new that SA was going to be 10 books - I adamantly refused to read them for nearly 5 years because of that. However, I had previously read other series that I later found out were going to be longer than I hoped, so I may have gotten in the habit of checking how long a series was supposed to be, and the status of that series. Also, back in 2012/2013 when I first heard about SA, Brandon was not very far along, another reason I would not read it. Clearly, I have seen the Light and am starting a second reread of Way of Kings! Basically, I agree with whomever was lamenting people not knowing it's going to be a 10 book series.

While y'all were talking about the the series as a whole and the two 5 book arcs, a knot began to form in my stomach as I started actually considering that some of the characters I love will not make it to the second arc. :'( I think knowing it's inevitable that some die is worse than not knowing, so maybe I would've been better off not ever scouring the internet for information, that way I would read hoping everyone lived, verses anxiously reading waiting to see which ones will die. Oh, my heart!

We did Atlanta in the fourth one, which was recorded long after #3. So I think I grabbed all the Atlanta ones I wanted; I am pretty choosy to try and save time, so my apologies if they didn't get mentioned.

I looked at the Atlanta signing and they were all transcribed (including yours) in November and we recorded #4 and #5 in January. I can see why I did not select yours. Though your Silver Kingdom and Highprince questions were good, we didn't get too much earth-shattering in it, and the longer the question, the better it has to be for me to include it.

We never analyze all the WoBs. I try to pick things that are especially interesting, or are educational. I can't include everything because I already feel like we did too many of these, so I do try to hit the big highlights. I'm not sure I did the best of it in these last two, but hey.

If it makes you feel better, I cut Argent's questions from the Chicago part last time.

WRT the question of which world will get into space first, Brandon has said that the next Mistborn era will have a technology level analogous to our 1980s time period.  By that time, we'd been going into space for a couple decades... but Earth and Scadrial have one crucially important difference in this regard.  A major motivation for the American space program was specifically to get to the moon, and Scadrial doesn't have any moons!

I wonder how that will affect their development...

I took the “extra dead” comment a bit differently I guess. Stabbing someone would kill them. But in the case of a Herald, it seems that it might kill a physical body but the soul would always regenerate, just like the Fused. So the only way to “kill” a Herald is to trap its soul and prevent its ability to be regenerated. I mean, unless you have Nightblood. Lol so I think it stands to reason that Odium’s plan against the Oathpact ever being remade is to trap the souls of the Heralds which might then serve to free him from his prison? I don’t know.

Its early and I have a baby that never sleeps so I’m happy to be wrong. Lol
