Shardcast: White Sand Omnibus

Chaos
 Share

The White Sand Omnibus is here, and so it's time for another episode of Shardcast where we go into extensive detail on things. There's character stuff, lore stuff, talking about the Indiegogo failure, as well as astrophysics and complex cosmere stuff. Oh, and infesting sand! This is a very weird and extremely nerdy episode, even for us.

We have Eric (Chaos), David (Windrunner), Evgeni (Argent), and Joshua (jofwu)!

O well, you have not touched the big question. Is it worth it, if you already have the three previous ones?

Really enjoyed this episode! I recieved my copy of the omnibus last night, so I had a blast flipping through the pages with Y'all's discussion.

Would it make sense if Bavadin was an Aether or an Aetherbound of note? The idea of granting your powers to other people but still having them be a part of you sounds A LOT like how Aether's work. Aethers also have a fluid identity that incorporates and individual and autonomous aspects, so this all sounds a lot like an Aether to me. Could also explain why there appears to be Aether-like aspects to the magic without it actually being a known Aether.

If we assume that Bone Spores are indeed White Sand, I don't think it's truly a 13th Aether- that's comparable to how Rosharans would be see a Seon, I think. Seons are cognitive beings that form bonds with humans and the humans get a magical benefit out of that, so a Rosharan might be tempted to call them an 11th variety of Radiant Spren, but that's not really what they are.

Similarly, I think White Sand is similar to Aether because it's operating on the same underlying principles, but it's not quite the same thing. Like White Sand relies on an external power source but recharges quite easily, while an Aether spore seems to having an internal but finite amount of power.

I think the answer to that will vary wildly by person, so it's difficult to answer. It's a function of how much you like the story, how much you might like the changes (I think everyone would agree it was changed for the better, but not everyone would agree on the extent to which those changes improve the story), how those opinions translate to money you're willing to spend, how much a published prose version in the coming years might change the equation for you, etc.

In my opinion, definitely worth it.

Strongly agree.
