Shardcast: Dawnshard Novella Title and Predictions

Chaos
 Share

We wanted to do a "short" episode of us discussing the reveal of the novella that will be out prior to Rhythm of War, Dawnshard! But then we blabbed. We blabbed a lot about a lot of things. Things we know basically nothing about. But now you will also know the nothing we know about Dawnshards and Aimians together. After all, the real Dawnshards are the friends we met along the way.

For news and info on Dawnshard, see here: https://www.17thshard.com/news/brandon-news/so-the-novella-is-called-dawnshard-r579/

This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), and Joshua (jofwu). Most importantly this episode was edited by the wonderful FeatherWriter, who just did incredible on this one. This episode also was a giant pain to render, so I think really the Sleepless just didn't want you to hear our totally legit and not ridiculous theories here.

Next week we won't have our usual Shardcast, but this Sunday we will have a 5000 subscriber Q&A on our Twitch, https://twitch.tv/17th_shard at 11am Pacific where we will answer your questions! The next Shardcast will be two weeks from today.

Will the 5000 subscriber stream be put on YouTube later?  My laptop is a little finicky about twitch.

I wouldn't say the Isaac interview was a Shardcast :) But yeah it's sure been a ton of videos!

I'm on the train that Unmade are Dawnshards. I believe they were created by Adonalsium and Odium "Unmade"/Twisted them by forcing out all Investiture not coded to him. Odium realized humans because of Shallan's encounter with Re-Shephir.

One idea I've always liked about the poem of Ista is that the one "taking the Dawnshard" is a sleepless. They crawled up the steps, and the steps are ten strides tall. Who would measure height in strides?

Argent was right, you had done the Syl WtCC before. My fault for emailing twice though!

SAME!

Are we in agreement that the 10 strides tall stepped structure with a temple on top "made for heralds" is actually Urithiru? It has 10 rings that are 10 stories tall each. The temple at the top may be the roof. They worship a god that rode the storms and we saw a wedding conducted up there, a ceremony often performed in temples and other houses of worship.

What did the Sleepless do? Maybe make a binding agreement with the Stormfather that created a perpetual storm around Akinah?

Ooh! I have my own hot take theory. Interlude spoilers though, so watch out:

Spoiler

The Eila Stele mentions that the Singers were prohibited or forbidden from using the Surges. Syl says that a Bondsmith bound the Surges. Maybe, what if... a Singer Bondsmith, under Honor's command, bound the Surges into the Dawnshards and then cast them out of Roshar. The Ashynites then found them and like normal humans, destroyed themselves.

Anyway, but I am also in the camp that the Dawnshards became the Unmade.

Either the Dawnshards were made and then Odium tried to destroy them, but only ended up twisting them.

OR!!

Odium made the Dawnshards on Ashyn and Honor tried to unmake them to protect Roshar!! :D

I do not at all think it is referring to Urithiru. Also, each of the "levels" of Urithiru is eighteen stories tall, not ten.

Fair!

I'm relying on that description being one of those things that's misremembered from being retold over and over for maybe thousands of years. Urithiru was made by the KR whose existence was inspired and later codified by the Heralds, not literally "made for Heralds".  Urithiru looks like giant steps from the outside, but the person probably didn't literally climb the side like they were stairs. (unless they were sleepless). The description is way off in a literal sense, but if you squint ...

We'll just have to see which of us is right in 15 - 20 years. :)

I just don't think there's enough evidence to say it is Urithiru, so I try to be careful in my claims.

I feel like there definitely can be other extravagant temples and stuff way back when though.

I feel like some people on the cast, especially Chaos (no offense) get overly hung up on some of the wording that is used.  Like with the whole “back of the book”/Sleepless deal where they say “we may one day again have power” yada yada, I don’t think the “we” is actually indicative of anything.  “We” could easily just mean “the sapient species of Roshar”, instead of the Sleepless.

For example, in America, we (see?) say that “we put a man on the moon”.  But out of everyone who says that, there is a near zero chance that the speaker had anything to do with it.  But its “we” as a whole.

That’s how I view the back of the book descriptions, and just some of the overly specific stuff that gets focused on.

I could be wrong though.  That’s just my read

Obviously the Lopen travels to Aimia because he has a couple of cousins who live there.

In honor of all the hot takes:

Hot take while listening to this discussion- Siah Aimians are immortal, blue(ish), and seem to be connected to the Cognitive Realm (as indicated by their shadows).  They can also change their skin at will.  I think it's obvious that Siah Aimians are descendants of humans and honorspren, and this confirms a future relationship between Kaladin and Syl.

Or not .
