"Oh, dear." Allivia grimaced. "I know you're new here, but Nicolae's a little...." She gestured with her hands. "Well, ya know. I'm sure he was just tryin' to get in with ya. Ivian knows better than to assign him to you." She shook his head. "Don't trust him, love."

Alienor hesitated. "Well then... will you take me to the king?"

"I absolutely will! Get that skirtchaser off your tail. Good for you." Allivia walked with her down the halls.

That wasn't what Alienor intended, but it would suit for now. She followed Allivia down the hallway. "How do you know about Nicolae?"

"Well, I've been here quite a long time, miss. But..." She laughed nervously. "With all due respect, Your Highness, everyone here knows 'bout Nicolae Kimby and his... issues. Almost as iconic as the Lady Raven. Oh, look, we're here!" Allivia knocked on the door for Eleanor.

Allivia was shocked. She paled, but hid her outrage behind a smile. "Oh. Well... I wouldn't question the king, but... Why? Exactly?"

"He's a loyal manservant. What more can I say?" Ivian moved to close the door. "Well, if that's all, I'm rather busy right now..."

"Yes! My apologies, and thank you." Alienor bowed.

Allivia stood wordless, mouth working.

Alienor took the maid by the arm and turned her, then began walking down the hall.

Allivia seemed to be staring into space, plotting.

"Excuse me?" Alienor said politely.

She shook herself. "What?" Allivia was not particularly good at keeping the edge out of her voice.
