Kelsier heard Sage’s steps halt, then move away. Good, he thought. He didn’t know how this conversation would end and it was better for her to be away from the immediate area of effect.

You say that you wanted to do this, but in the next breath say it was what Ati would have wanted, Harmony said quietly. Do you actually desire this, or is it merely what you feel you must do? You have other options -

She folded her arms across her chest. You're in my damn head, what do you think? Would I have come out of those years with my sanity intact if I hadn't? An Inquisitor under her Lord Ruler doesn't question, and an Inquisitor under Ruin can't. I know of exactly one man who resisted their influences, and I can't say how well he turned out in the end. Her disdain was almost tangible. Of course I love it. I'm made of spikes and pain and you know what, Terrisman, I do love that. I love the power and I love the blood and I love being able to make it through a day without - she stopped thinking abruptly and twisted mentally around. Look, your old friend is here. He seems a lot more like me than you, eh? Where is the brave man who brought down an empire at the Survivor's side?

You are avoiding things, I think. One of those things being a coherent, non-insulting conversation. Harmony was briefly dry. We will return to this conversation another time. And he withdrew a little.

But if taking the freedom from one restores it to uncountable others, others who get to live their lives as fully as they can, it is a theft I will make. Would you be so reticent if it had been Zola she had slaughtered for her tin? They are all my children, and precious. They are the children of others and they have their own loved ones. You did not know this woman; you care only for a select few. Your crew. It has been this way as long as I have known you. But I cannot exist the same.

“If she’d killed Zola, I’d have killed her,” Kelsier replied. “Better to die free than live a slave, Saze. You knew that once; that’s why you joined us. That’s why you fought.

”You’re a good man, Saze. A better one than me and I wouldn’t want you otherwise. But this woman was dying tonight, one way or another, by Marie’s hand or mine. Stopping her here doesn’t change that.

“And it won’t stop me from freeing her every time the Compounder reclaims her.” His eyes stayed focused on Marie’s spikes, fierce and challenging. 

“So why not try something else? Let her work with me, follow my rules.” He smirked slightly, humor flickering in the back of his true eye. “With her history she’ll need a trial period anyway. And Marie needs to decide if she likes the way I work. Ganache can fight her off if she needs to - you’ve seen her do it. And you’ll have your Compounder and Kandra to keep an eye on things.” He smiled. “It’s worth a try, at least. When was the last time you let her run free?” His voice softened, his eye growing distant. “Three hundred years is a long time to be a slave, Saze. Hell, sixteen months nearly broke me.”

Eryn chuckled, following Zola into the washroom. “First wet hands,” she demonstrated, “then soap, then scrub hands together, then pat face, then wash off hands, wash off face, then dry.” She moved away from the basin, smiling at Zola. “Your turn.”

It's probably the Survivor, Ladashwy shouldn't have the power to free her and he asked me what I'd do in that situation earlier. She marked a pause. If you start needing to take control of her because someone broke mine this then whole deal isn't actually useful for you
