Ok, thank you for letting me join! Character:
Name:
Ara

Race: Human

Age: 19

Appearance: Short, female human with curly blonde hair and tanned skin. She wears a red noble’s dress, slightly tattered at the hem. Ara trails an inverse shadow that can sometimes be seen if it’s dark enough. The shadow glows dimly white at it edges, then burns to a blue, purple, and ultraviolet color toward the middle.

Powers: Ara’s shadow is a Shade. A kind of ghost that is bonded to her. It calls itself Memory, though it doesn’t remember its name in life. Memory can speak to Ara, but not to anyone else. Ara can channel life essence from Memory into runes that she carves in wood and metal. The rune determines the magical effect produced, and Ara can create magitech devices powered by Memory by combining runes in interesting ways. When Memory runs low on essence, he becomes drowsy. Eventually, his essence will return to him once expended.

Personality: Ara is optimistic. She always sees the best in people, and will try to excuse all but the worst actions in others as simple mistakes, or as seeming justified to them at the time. When it’s an option, Ara will always try to end a conflict peacefully.

Backstory: Ara was raised by a noble house in a far off land, but was forced to flee when her powers came manifest so that her abusive parents wouldn’t force her to use them to their own ends. Ara escaped with the help of her two sisters, and has been in hiding since. She’s searching for a way to gain enough influence that she can recover her sisters from their parents, as well as keep her freedom without having to be on the run for her entire life.

Ara stood up from where she’d been tinkering with a new rune, moving it to her satchel. A prophesy! A dragon! Memory whispered in Ara’s mind. “This is what you wanted, Ara. A chance. Take the dragon’s power, it’s fame, it’s riches. It is a bright light indeed, and you could grow brighter from it.” Ara mulled it over. It was certainly appealing. If she slew a dragon, perhaps that would give her the resources she needed to help her sisters, to not be on the run anymore? Then again... that dragon hadn’t hurt her, why should she kill it? That would be mean! Dragons were people too. Well... Ara thought, at least it’s worth a shot. Resolved, Ara made her way to follow the strange group and the boy who had delivered the prophesy. “Hello, may I join you?”

Talnic spun to face the speaker, tense, anxious, and done with dealing with people. He just wanted to be alone. But that wasn't an option for him at the moment.

He nodded his consent. "Yes."

She had found her way to them, and was very likely to play a part in everything.

Talnic gave a prophecy, which @Ookla the Knight came up with. And I think we're moving to a different sparring ground now because we're attracting too much attention.

“Sure thing,” Orpheus said, then turned back to the man and the elf. “I’m Orpheus by the way. And we should best get going before the whole school wants to come.”

And so Orpheus went off to a nearby empty training ground, others following behind.

Or, at least, he had thought it was empty. A lone girl was practicing by herself in the cold. Much safer than the other area. Maybe it was a private area?

@Ookla the Grammatical, that’s Minuet btw.

Exasperated, Talnic stepped forward, towering over the elf. "It was a prophecy, and when I ignore them, things tend to go downhill very quickly. Now, tell me what I said. I won't be asking next time."

Talnic hated threatening violence, but the last time he'd ignored a prophecy, an entire village had nearly been burned to the ground.

"I..."

Orpheus interfered. "Listen, listen, it was something about fire, and dragons, and the call to... something or another..." Orpheus's memory faltered. He had trouble remembering any exact wording, as Orpheus was too frightened by the strange, trance-like rhyme.

I ᴋɴᴏᴡ ɪᴛ.

Orpheus flinched, but managed to regain his composure. He glanced back from the elf to the man, wondering if either had noticed. And then his demon began to repeat what the man had said. Orpheus repeated the words back to the man as he heard them.

Talnic grimaced. Of course there would be another quest. And of course he would have to find another dragon. He hated bothering the creatures, and they hated being bothered, especially by people who wanted to kill them. At least he knew how to properly interact with dragons to avoid getting incinerated.

But "To mount a strike..." Hopefully he would be able to avoid attacking a dragon, and get away with just some of its hoard, as he had done in the past.

The line where it said that others would be going as well, though, that bothered him. The prophecy hadn't specifically mentioned Talnic himself, but each and every one in the past had ended up with him involved in some way or another. And he'd have to do whatever he was supposed to be doing with other people. And knowing the prophecies, it would be the people who had heard the prophecy in the first place.

"So," he said slowly, letting his hand drop from his sword. "How do you two feel about hunting down a dragon? I think that there are others who we will need to find, as neither of you are dwarves, but that will happen eventually. We need to take the first steppes, and the rest usually falls into place rather quickly."

He hated the stupid prophecies.

"Hunting down... a dragon?"

"Hunting down... a dragon?"

“Um, yes. You want to come with us or not? The fact you were here for the prophecy accounts for something, and the prophecy states your fate is likely at stake.”

I don't think you posted it. I think all you got was the character sketch.

"My... my fate?"

Talnic sighed. "Often, if people become involved in my prophecies and they choose to follow along, there don't tend to be any long lasting effects. But if they ignore them, there are occasionally consequences, although they tend to be greater for me than anyone else if I am the one who ignores them." Unless I was the one who caused you village to be destroyed. "You may come with us, or stay here. Something might happen to you, or maybe nothing will, although the prophecy did imply that something was at risk if you ignored it."

Talnic was a little surprised at the willingness of the human to accompany him, however. Perhaps it was simply a thirst for adventure.

No... isn't that the second time it's been ruined?

I'll do my entry post now, also.

~~Shameless plug-in about the new SE game so I can PM/Attempt to pocket get her to trust me/something of the sort Connie again~~

(Fair warning. I'm picturing Traige as Kenton, so... that may or may not bleed into his narration. Hopefully not.) Anyway, I'm just gonna have him chill in a nearby village until you sweep in and pick him up after starting the quest.

The backside of the empty fruit stand was dirty, streaked with grime. Just like Traige.

He sat against a home, facing the cart, whacking the cart with a stick. The cart was about seven feet away, but that didn't matter in the slightest. Traige needed to do nothing but think to accomplish the thwacking.

Wham.

Wham.

The stick left marks on the cart, scars. Just like his own. They were inflicted by Traige.

Just like his own.

He stopped, dropping the stick with a loosening of his mind. No. It was not his fault. It was theirs. Sighing, he stood and walked across the street to his 'home'. A barn with a hay bed. The villagers were nice to let him stay, but he knew the truth. They didn't want him here.

He needed to go. He needed something.

He needed a family.

His family.

All right, tag me. I'll come, I guess.

Edit: Oh, really? That was that one? Okay, I'll go find that.

Rosalie strode along the courtyard, smiling like she knew something everyone else didn't. She didn't, though. She had no secrets. She was strange like that. Everybody had secrets. Well, almost everybody. Rosalie stopped her pondering and continued to walk.

"Well..." Ara trailed off. What even were they doing, exactly? It seemed she had come in on this later than everyone else. Then, she continued, flustered. "Well, there was this prophesy, and, apparently, we're supposed to kill a dragon, I guess? Which I'd really prefer not to do, but fate and all, so... I mean, if you want to help us, you can."

"Um... kill a dragon?" Minuet pictured the look on her uncle's face when he heard that she had left her training to go kill a dragon. Plus, isn't this about what her Grace was made for? But it might be dangerous for them if she stayed with them. "Sure, as long as you'll have me! Just so you know, I'm dangerous to be around."

The Silver Merchant was quiet tonight. Dariya had let Avren retire early, the old innkeeper claiming “It’s bad for your health, so many late nights.” Despite that, this was the first night off he’d had in years.

He could go out, see the street performers, visit the night market, but the streets were dangerous, and it wasn’t like he had any—

The jingling of keys came from the other side of the door. Some muttered cursing, and then a sharp click. The door swung open, revealing a burly man Avren had never seen before, and Dariya, her face wrought with scorn.

“Wha—”

The man strode into the room and pinned Avren’s hands behind his back. Panic flared in his stomach. How did she... No, she couldn’t have found out. He had been careful, he had done everything right. But if that was true...

Then this wouldn’t be happening.

The man looked to Dariya, who remained in the hall outside. She nodded, and the man began to force Avren out of the room.

As they passed her in the hall, Avren struggling weakly, Dariya leaned in and whispered to him. “You filthy liar,” she hissed. “Consider this a mercy. I should have your head for this.”

At those words, the fight drained out of him, the knowledge of betrayal seeping into his skin, down to his bones. It was inevitable, he’d known that. And Dariya was right. He would’ve, should’ve, been killed.

Even still, it was hard to feel thankful as he was pitched onto the street, his few belongings thrown out after him.

He could feel the stares of people passing by, wondering at what this odd boy did to get thrown out. He wanted to disappear, to melt into the shadows and never be seen again. His face burned as he picked up his things and slung his pack over his shoulder, as he began to trudge down the street, head down. He knew an alley by the academy that was usually empty. He could sleep there tonight, and tomorrow—

No. He pushed all those thoughts away. He had to focus on tonight. Tears spilled down his cheeks, no matter how hard he fought to contain them. By the time he reached the alley, he was shaking. The packed dirt hardly looked appealing, but it was all he had.

Quote

I guess I’ll just wait until the group passes by the alley?

“Well, this has been quite the turn of events...” Orpheus started, “Can we all start by introducing ourselves to one another, because I’m starting to lose track. I’m Orpheus.”
