"I don't know. It just is."

"Is it giving you visions?" asked Gerald. "Or messages, or anything of the sort?"

"It hurts like crap and... that's about it, really."

"Hmm," said Gerald. "Well, it's certain to be a portent of something. But it's likely impossible to guess what of until it happens." He shrugged. "We're nearly at the sword shop. Best to worry about one thing at a time."

"We already got a scabbard, though. He just had to make it."

Gerald already knew that, whoops. :P I've edited.

"Yeah but that was... tomorrow. Remember? We went back in time."

"You're caught up," affirmed Gerald. "You wouldn't have been able to summon Q from the portal grounds otherwise."

The shopkeeper walked up. "Ah yes! The lady with the valuable sword, and her friend." He glanced curiously at Gerald but did not say anything. "You are right on time; I have just finished crafting your scabbard."

"Gotcha. Uhm..." I finger the amulet, then mutter, "two hundred..."

I hand the merchant his money. "Here ya go."

The merchant looks surprised at first, then suspicious. "These aren't counterfeit bills, are they?" he challenged.

"Couldn't tell you, really. I sure hope they're not." I look over at them. "What, is there something off about them?"

"Yeah," said the trader, his suspicion lessening slightly but not vanishing completely. "The watermark is all off. They look they were churned out by a printer- and not a terribly good one, either. Where did you get them?"

Gerald tapped Ellis on the shoulder urgently.

The merchant's brow furrowed. Gerald hurriedly slapped a chunk of gold on the counter.

"I knew that exchanger was shady," he interjected. "No respectable trader would hide behind such a bad fake mustache! Too bad he ran off with our money before we could have it checked! Oh well, there's little hope we'll be able to catch him now!"

The merchant's eyes widened when he saw the gold. He fingered it and gave it a sniff. Satisfied, he handed the scabbard over. "Just terrible, these counterfeiters," he said, not breaking eye contact with Gerald. "Conning honest people for their own personal profit. Just terrible."

I grin at the merchant sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry..."

"What do you have to apologize for?" said the merchant mildly, turning back to his shop. "Idiocy isn't a crime... and you were very generous with your gold."

"Thanks for the scabbard," said Gerald, tugging Ellis away from the stand. "We'll be sure to recommend you to all our sword-wielding friends! Er, so that they can buy from you. Not... yeah."
