harthedragon Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Hi everyone! I made this account for Aether of the Night, but I'm also taken aback by the high amount of great content I've seen on the site within the first 15 minutes of me just browsing. I'm not exactly a brand new fan of Sanderson's works, but I still have a large amount to get through: From the cosmere, I've read Mistborn Era 1 and am working through Stormlight before the RoW release (just recently finished WoR). I've also read Skyward, and am currently reading Stephen Leeds. It's been so much fun getting to dive into an authors works with such a large back catalog. I'm avoiding reddit forums and the like to prevent spoilers, but I thought posting here couldn't hurt- I'd love to make friends to talk to about books! Some of my other interests aside from fantasy books include watching animated movies and learning new languages! Hope to get to know some people here 3
Mist she/her Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Welcome to the Shard! Be careful in forums for books you haven't read. They contain spoilers. What's your favorite book? What languages have you learned? 1
Zephrun’s Imperium they/he Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Always so great to have new people here! This place is pretty great, I think you'll enjoy it. You have a favorite Sanderson character?

What's your favorite book? What languages have you learned? not sure if this is the right way to reply... haha I'm not the most tech savvy. Thanks for the heads up on spoilers! Most of my favourite books are in the fantasy genre, so here are a couple: The Way of Kings - even though it hasn't been that long since I read it, it blew me away with the worldbuilding and magic system. The Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab - the characters in this I found to be great, and its just a story that feels so tight-knit and comforting if that makes sense. The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima is less known, but I loved this series so much. The characters just grow and develop so much throughout the series and they're so easy to get attached to. Some childhood favourites are Percy Jackson, the Rangers Apprentice, and the Inkheart trilogy. English is my first language, but I learned Punjabi soon after. I also learned Hindi later from movies, although I'm not 100% fluent in speaking it. I know a fair bit of French and Spanish as well, but my French has (sadly) been going downhill slowly after high school since I'm too busy with university to practice consistently. I'm also learning Japanese! I hope to learn ASL someday along with Mandarin and German, if possible. 2

You have a favorite Sanderson character? yes definitely! From Mistborn, Sazed was by far my favourite. I connected with his character and his struggles, and really loved his development (especially when it came to The Hero of Ages). I also love Kaladin, I get the feeling he's a popular favourite! His relationship with Syl is something I especially I love.

Scout_Fox he/him Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) Smart, smart I like this thought process right here . Joining for Aether and staying for the content I think means we succeeded. See the only problem is now we've trapped you into discussing Sanderson work for the rest of eternity (jkjk... unless ). lol, glad to have you here! Finishing SA before RoW is a MUST. Just forsake all future plans for like a few days. Trust me everyone is always super understanding and supportive of your needs (sometimes... yeah yknow maybe don't take me up on this). We love to have new friends here to talk to as well! 1 hour ago, Mist said: Be careful in forums for books you haven't read. They contain spoilers. Is most definitely a much good warning, 10/10 would recommend. Most times tho stuff is sorta kinda labelled if it has spoilers but the threads on the individual books are a definite no-no if you haven't read them. It's like trying to cut open a pack of glitter with a knife, if you don't want to deal with glitter for the next 4 weeks, don't open it. Easy. As far as languages... wow. Forget Google Translate I'm just gonna bring you along next time I go anywhere! All in all tho, glad to have you here, hope you enjoy your time, and welcome to the Shard! Hen she/her Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Hello! We are happy to have you here! I hope you stay for more then Aether of night though. Sazed is actually the only charater from Mistborn that I connected with, so I agree that he’s amazing. Anyway, welcome to the shard! 1

I love high-risk magic systems, a good example of this would be the from Poppy War by RF Kuang! I heard the lightbringer series by Brent Weeks also has a magic system with high repercussions, so it's pretty high on my TBR. Having characters suffer just makes the story more enjoyable and realistic lol (I swear I'm not a sadist haha).

It's always so nice to get a warm welcome to somewhere new so I try my best to fill these with as much good welcomeness warm-fuzzies as possible! And now for the obligatory welcome-but-now-we-must-make-you-feel-bad-cuz-that's-what-makes-you-feel-welcome, the mods discourage posting multiple times in a row (as Darkfinder said). Instead, make one GIANT post that takes up so much screen real estate your fingers go numb scrolling through it. You can quote multiple people by clicking the + icon next to the "Quote" button for all the people you want to quote. You could also just press "Quote" type something, then press "Quote" for the next person, type something, and so on. Example of a second (or more) quote(s) here just for kicks: (tis a joke btw.. just in case ) 17 minutes ago, harthedragon said: (I swear I'm not a sadist haha).

Not yet, I was planning on doing a reread of the seven realms first as its been around 5 years since I've read it now. I already bought all the books because I'm expecting to love it! Even if I don't (unlikely) I won't mind since since the covers are soooo pretty. I bought the hardcovers, and was lucky enough to get the exclusive dust jacket of Flamecaster so all my covers match

I think you will love it. She kept to her strengths and the characters are great, too. Although I have to admit, that I put the first one down after the first chapter and then needed a whole year to get back to it. I never regretted it, don't get me wrong, but the start of that series was a lot to swallow for me. Did you read her other one, the Heir chronicles?

Yeah I heard about the start of Flamecaster, not looking forward to it I did read the Heir chronicles, but wasn't as fond of it (it was enjoyable while reading, but definitely not at the same level as her other books for me). Urban fantasy has always been more of a miss for me, so I wasn't entirely surprised- it came down to personal taste. Did you enjoy them?

I liked some of its premises, the magic system and the like, but in the end I only found two urban fantasy series I loved so far, so I wasn't entirely surprised by that. As we're talking about books already: did you read the Codex Alera? I loved them dearly, can't count how often I reread them so far.

I haven't read Codex Alera yet, but its definitely on my list. I haven't actually read anything by Jim Butcher yet (hides in shame). What do you like most about the series? It sounds super interesting from the synopsis!
