My dad served his LDS mission in Taiwan and then lived there for a few years afterwards.

One time he and his sister were staying at either a super fancy restaurant or very prestigious university campus (I don't remember which and I don't know why they were there) but every time they walked through the lobby the workers would but up a screen in front of them so that the rich people who stayed there wouldn't see the poor white foreigners.

Weird, from my experience, things are usually more like this

Quote

Ohh look, is that an American? Why don't you go talk to him...to practice your English

This might not be true for rich people. Or it could be for religious reason(tho it’s very unlikely) Or it might just be because we are a lot less friendly than we think we are. Anyway, I sorry that your dad had a terrible experience.

@Scout_Fox yes you’re right, Chinese is a lot more complicated. Because of that, who ever wrote the text book decided it would be easier for us not to learn all the rules. If that make sense.

If you really want to correct every grammar mistake I’ve ever make @Condensation, you would go mad.:D

completely defeats the occasional purpose of using bad grammar: to save time.

There are many other completely accepted reasons to use technically incorrect grammar, particularly on the internet. It’s like a new dialect of the language: no longer incorrect, just correct in a different way. If you’re being formal then that’s one thing, but with talking regularly you often don’t want to be formal; it defeats the purpose of what you’re trying to do.

*Interesting, interesting. Much grammar.

I'm not even going to correct your grammar, just your punctuation and capitalization.

You know thats honestly alright though I do tend to think Im pretty good at my punctuation my sentences are always really easy to follow and clear as well in addition to that I always make sure Im using apostrophes where theyre needed therefore I really think I have nothing to worry about here obviously I got this one....                  (if Brian made explosion I sincerely apologize let him know is much sorry :P)

Idk I feel like the uber-rich of any culture can develop this tendency. It could also very well be due to religious (or maybe a strong subset of cultural???) values, absolutely! Nahhh I wouldn't think that if anyone I'd say it would be Americans blazing in there ignoring cultures and being rude and all that lol :D

Edit: Oh and that second part.... BIG BRAIN I want to meet this person

@Scout_FoxAnd because the text book now have a lot of space, we have to learn the old Chinese which is a loooooooooot harder than the old English.

Dangit it was going so well!!! Lmao that's actually kinda tragic if they're gonna do that wouldn't it just make more sense to to learn the new rules cuz it would actually be useful???  Rip :(

True, but also... not true. There's an author I really like, he often write poems in his novels in the old Chinese. That's the only use I've found for the old Chinese

Hey that's really cool then! It's awesome that you have found a use for it especially with an author who you enjoy! That's cool that he writes that way as well, do you think he's doing it for stylistic preference, so only a select few can read it, or just to honor the tradition of it? (or none of these lol :D)

It's mostly because his story is set in the old China, and so he had his character write poems(to honor the tradition). Tho I think another reason is because he wanted to challenge himself, I think he once wrote a book and if you combine each chapter name it would become a poem.

Ohhhhhh that's sick!! That's like the perfect use of it, getting it to work in context and time period! Not only that but it probably helps introduce people who read modern Chinese to old Chinese in a way where they can still understand the novel but also be introduced to the full immersion. That's a really great challenge!

And... WOAHH! That's awesome! That takes dedication to fit that all together and is quite a creative idea!

My only knowledge of the Chinese language comes from Ni Hao Kai-Lan.

Also my Chinese friend tried to reach me how to pronounce her Chinese name (Jinghua) but apparently I would say the word for frog instead.

Do that again and I'll leave this thread for a while. I'll probably come back, but I'll leave. I mean, it is kind of fun, but now I have to look at that like every 5 minutes.

Sorry, sorry!!! I had to at least once lol :D. From now on I'll try to follow proper grammaticalized convention (ok from now on, it was just begging for it :P)

No, he's good at his punctuation. Not at correct punctuation, but at his.

He wants me to tell my brain sorry. He doesn't want everyone to know that he's sorry, he wants my 'Brian' to know that he's sorry.

For the record Condensation I do believe you are right about them. The first correction makes it slightly better actually but they both work. And you are quite smart that part doesn't apply I just thought this would be funny lols
