Wait wait wait

So you are saying

That-You are saying that you dont like lyrics, unless the lyrics are good

Hot, controversal take. Wild, wild stuff.

And please do enlighten me how Welcome to the Internet would have any resemblance to itself if gone away with the lyrics.

welcome to the internet is not a song I'm discussing :3

the lyrics are bad unless they're consistently good and don't work against the song...

Well, then can you tell me how a song can tell a story if you aren't a pitch-perfect god that can see and decipher hidden clues in sheet music as you are listening to a song, or it is just a reference that brings you joy, or is just a fun song that doesn't tell a meaningful story?

Sorry if I come across a little rude, I just feel strongly and am not good at expressing strong feelings about an opinion difference without coming off this way.

A song can tell a story that's more beautiful because it's unique to the listener, because it's unique with each interpretation. Sounds alone can convey emotions, settings, characters, and progression.

Words, on the other hand, tend to impede that. It takes a lot of mastery to communicate through music, but little to communicate through words. By putting words to your music, it feels like you are ruining the music by taking a shortcut. I tend to appreciate art forms that have lots of passion within them, so this is a reflection of my tastes. You may choose to think otherwise.

How do sounds alone communicate characters or settings? I understand emotions, and progression, but settings and characters are a bit of a stretch. As much as I do agree with the unique to each interpretation, I severely disagree with the sentiment of it being a shortcut. I have a question for you: How do you understand the music's story without lyrics? Because I am a very story-oriented person, and as much as I enjoy the sentiment of something being unique with each interpretation, how much of that is the song's storytelling, and how much of that is you imagining a story that aligns with the song?

Musical progression... you can listen to a song and tell if it is sad or happy or fast or slow or whether the wind is blowing or the rain is falling. There are famous examples of characters being portrayed through different instruments, for example.

I still don't understand why you so incredibly hate lyrics, however. You just don't like how they are... easy to understand?

Okkkk, big thief simulation swarm, big thief velvet ring, Jesse Welles Walmart, my chemical romance The End

I agree with and disagree with both yall, I think words can add great meaning to songs but I also think songs can tell stories without them, go listen to Nocturno by Richard Strauss it tells the story of a man who’s first children and wife died and he’s writing a lullaby for his son in a second marriage, it’s also not too long I personally like the one by John cerminaro

I just hate songs that end up being generic and overrated because they have lyrics describing how the songwriter bought a truck, got drunk, got a girl, and then bought a red truck. Those types of songs aren't good.

You aren’t responding to any of my actual arguments. Specifically this:

And most works of fiction aren't that good because the writer just started writing, or doesn't have any experience, or was trained wrong, or gets the wrong feedback.

If most paintings are terrible, does that mean you shouldn't go to museums?

If most humans do bad things, does that mean you should stop looking for the good ones?

The logic I see here is that Most songs w/ lyrics are bad, so you stopped looking for the good ones from the good artists with the good stories

It's really just a preference thing; I'm not trying to preach that everyone should have the same taste as I do. I'm just justifying my own taste because you asked that for me.

I heavily disagree pls present evidence hehehehe this is so fun guys, I agree partly with aeoryi tho but I also kinda like some “fluff” songs sometimes like I don’t listen to Chappel roan bc the songs mean stuff I listen to her bc sometimes it’s fun to be slontzey yk?

I actually have a whole playlist abt school shootings

It’s rly good/sad

I’m realizing I listen to a concerningly large amount of songs abt school shootings, granted it’s always been something I’ve been aware of one of the first school shootings happened at a elementary school in the state I live in, but anyways bang bang by Green Day and kill all your friends by My Chemical Romance are both excellent songs

I know, I am just trying to defend a piece of media I enjoy from what I see as a very biased view.

Under Pressure by Queen
Every song by Bob Dylan
Every song by Jesse Welles
A lot of songs by Simon and Garfunkel
So on so forth
And you don't need every song to be lyrical poetry
Sometimes you just wanna listen to something with a fun beat and cliche lyrics like The Clash or The Cars or what not
