Fox yelped in frustration when she got encircled by strange winds, but then froze when she heard Circe. Tendrils of shame began manipulating their way into her heart. Suddenly everything Fox had done seemed extremely childish. But these people, her mind argued, they were trying to hold her back. "It-it wasn't my fault..." she responded lamely. "They wouldn't let me leave!"

Circestran gazes at Fox piercing her soul with ancient discerning vision. "You are running Fox. From what do you flee? Is it from the pain that you caused my husband, a being who cares for you more than you are willing to admit? Is it from a lack of knowledge of who you are? Does that scare you? Perhaps the truth is this Fox, you have spent so long without love and hope that you are pushing away those who would give it to you. It is easier to live in a prison of your own making than to face your demons. Maybe this is why you are fleeing so quickly. Tell me why Fox? Why do you think that answers will come by running and attacking those who seemingly mean you no harm? Answer me Fox." A tear slides down her face. Her voice cracks. "Show me that he was not wrong. Show me that I am not wrong."

Peace surrounds them as they make their way toward a stream. Its waters appear to glow beneath the moon. Smooth stones line the riverbed. Clear crystal reveals that which lies below. At the bank Rish stops. "Look into the waters and tell me what you see."

"You sigh at me in skepticism and yet this is the truth. You are in control of the memories not me. We go where you mind seeks to go. As for what happened, I would say that you memory is demanding to be explored. Let us do so." With grace Circestran rises. She holds out a hand to Fox.

Circestran watches the world shift in silence. She freezes in place when she sees him. Her composure falls away. A gasp escapes her lips. "My love." Her whispered words carry a weight that transcends eternities. Words fail her tears fall from her and create a steady stream she sobs in silence. Nothing can stop her and she cannot be consoled. Sadness and joy join. An immense burst of will rises up to meet her tears. They are dammed up and calm returns to her form.

Rish's face no sign of surprise. "The waters show each person their ties to this place. It reveals their ties to me. The first step is to sever these bonds. From that moment you will be born anew. Your old limitations will fall away." Rish raises her hand and a pair of amethyst shears appear. She holds them out to Vapor. I cannot sever the limitations that hold you back only you can. These shears will do so. Take them and cut in front of you and behind. Then you will be free."

Circestran hovers beside Fox as she shatters the sheath that had appeared over the knife. She frowns as some of her power flowed into Fox. In silence she watches Fox argue with the creator of the sheath.  When Fox charges the figure she rises to her full height. "Stop this." Her barked command launches through the air. "Is this how you think?"

James had only taken a few steps when his shadow swallowed him.

His first thought when the room around him began to darken was that of resignation. It was yet another attempt by the world to kick him out. But the walls didn't turn into sand, or spray, or rain- they stayed walls. They merely darkened, as though a black fog were obscuring them. James began to feel cold, both metaphorically and literally. What was going on?

In front of him, darkness began to swirl and take shape. It formed into the shape of an old man; the same that had so recently greeted him on the side of a city street.

"Hello," James said in greeting, cautiously.

The old man chuckled. "Greetings, young one." His calculating gaze swept over James, then across the surroundings. He smiled. "Well done. Well done indeed."

James cleared his throat. "Thank you, venerated one," he said, deliberately formal. "I must admit to... ah... some uncertainty regarding what I have done to deserve your praise..."

"You got us in here," said the old man. "More importantly, you kept us in here. Not the safest or easiest of tasks."

"I defer to Fate," said James; inwardly, he was pleased. Not many ever gave him praise.

Guilt stabbed through Fox's heart from seemingly behind. She wanted so desperately to have this person's approval, but... she didn't know why. Fox was weak for becoming so attached. It was obvious that Circe would abandon her once she found out who the real Fox was... So stupid and rash, never thinking through what she ws actually doing, a flailing blumbering fool. Maybe that was why she had stabbed herself. Perhaps Fox had realized how useless she really was. Perhaps it would have been for the better if she had died, for everyone. In a calm voice that surprised even Fox, she spoke without meeting Circe's eyes, "You were wrong about me. I am a disgusting human being." In a swift movement, she slammed her hand into the wall.

Whoops. Pain ripped through Fox's arm as she realized her mistake, and she let out a small whimper, before stubbornness took command again, causing her to clench her teeth shut and glare at her arm with severe fury.

IF anything I believe that we were right now more than ever. You call yourself disgusting, but I don't think that this is so. Why do you punish yourself then? If it is so then you would have no need to prove it to me or anyone else. You would live it. Try as you might the only thing that you have proven is that you want to avoid the possibility that you will be rejected. You fear the possibility of love because it can be lost. He did not abandon me. Tell me this. Did he reject you? You hurt him. Did he fight back? Did he kill you? Why would he allow you to do so?" She fades and reappears before Fox. "Let me tell you why. He loves you Fox. He so badly wanted you to be well that he allowed you take out your rage on him. He so cared for you that he wanted to hurt so that you would not. No matter how many times I tried to kill him he came back and let me escape. You hurt because you fear to be hurt. Accept that you can be loved because you already have been."

Hmm.

What do you think of memory loss as a consequence?

Vapor massages her head for a moment, then nods. She reaches back into her mind and pushes against her power, forcing it to shape the earth. Something seems to tug within her mind, and she cries out, holding her head. A series of images flash through her mind, fading. Her family. Her struggles on the streets. Her friends. Parts of them disappear, and she focuses her power on them, trying to hold them there. She struggles to remember names, feelings. "What did you do?" she asks Rish worriedly, coming out of her mind briefly as another flood of memories flows by, people missing from them. A final, clearer rush of recollections grows. Fadran, Queen, Nathrangking, Kindness, T, Ember, Vale, Spin, they all start to disappear. Herate, The Fox. Finally, Jeffrey and Jek. She frantically tries to hold them there, and they hold, struggling against the current of dreams. What she can remember of Jeffrey tugs away, following the other memories to an untouched, far corner of her mind. She could only remember Jek. She hadn't known him for very long, but she had cared about him. The memories of Jek began to strip off slowly, leaving one. The kiss. The current slows, and Vapor stares at the remaining memory confusedly. It seems familiar, as if from a dream. It flows down the stream in her mind, becoming forgotten. Vapor surfaces from her mind, staring at the figure before her. "Who are you?"

Spin hovers in the air next to Jek on the ship, thinking. A ripping feeling emanated from her center, and she sinks to the ground, becoming completely visible. Jek looks down, concerned. "I think something happened to Vapor," Spin says quietly, reaching to their bond. Instead of a long bridge, she finds a single string connecting them, and she knows if she were to try to cross it, it would fail.

"So," said James, after a moment of silence. "Who are you?"

The old man raised an eyebrow. "Why, I'm your shadow, of course. Surely you've figured that out?"

"Okay," said James. "So... why?"

"Why what?"

James gestured around. "Why did you want to come here? And why do you need me to do it?"

The old man leaned on a staff that materialized from the fog. "I am but a mere shadow. There is much I can no longer do alone."

James personally thought that this raised more questions than it answered. When he said he was a shadow- did he mean that literally, or figuratively? And if really wasn't all that powerful, how had he been able to defend James? Most importantly, he still hadn't answered James's most pressing question.

"Yes," he said, "but what is it that you need to do?"

The old man chuckled. "Why, the same thing you are here to do."

James sighed. Again, more questions than answers. Did the old man mean that he had a directive from Fate? Or did he know something about why James was here? Given his earlier comment, James was inclined to believe the latter. But Fate worked in mysterious ways, and there was no way of knowing for sure.

Silent tears poured down Fox's face. At first she was enraged at Circe for calling her afraid, she wasn't afraid of anything! But then... Fox realized the brutal truth of those words. She... really was weak. Fox really was afraid of being rejected once more. No. No, she was in control of her relationships, she always was. She could manipulate the people into doing what she wanted them to do if she needed to... but she hadn't done that with Nath. Nath had been there for her even though Fox hadn't tried to make friends with him, Fox hadn't used any of her tactics on him. That would make when he rejected her even worse. Fox raised her eyes to Circe's for a moment, but when they met, some sort of wild panicked terror ripped through Fox, and so she lowered them. No no no! She would not be afraid of this! She would whip this fear into submission, like she always did, with pure stubbornness! But... it wouldn't go away. The fear turned to a sort of dread that felt like a hundred pound weight pushing on her heart. Fox hated herself. She hated herself for hating herself, which led to herself hating herself more. Why couldn't she just be a simple human being? Why couldn't her emotions just be resolved with the flick of a switch as it seemed to happen for so many? Why did life have to be so storming complicated? Fox finally spoke in barely a whisper, "But how?"

remember that only Fox can see Circe, so it probably appears she is having a conversation with the air... might be a bit concerning :P
