"Herate," called Psyder, grimacing slightly as if in pain. "Good to see you're unhurt."

"Mostly, yes. What was that about with Nath? Don't you both want to see the silver fox dead and gone?"

"Does he?" asked Psyder dryly. "I hadn't noticed, what with him killing our soldiers and all." He took a deep breath and exhaled. "Luckily... most of them are safe. But they're out of the fight for now."

"So it's down to us. What problem is that? I'm certain the Fellowship has plans to remove the fox, so if we don't succeed, they will."

Martin walks over to the tree he had thrown a knife at and leans against it, locking his jaw.  He's an idiot.  A massive idiot.  Manpower doesn't not trump magic, and isn't that a thing to say?  Magic's real.

His shoulder aches dully, and he absently rubs it.  There's almost certainly a bruise forming there.

Okay.  Get moving.

He walks over to Ayia.  "I'll be honest, I'm not sure what good I am on an elite team."

"Hey! Who needs some glyph school?" Chrysler is absent-mindedly tracing a pattern on the ground, watching all the action. While she phrases the request to the open air, she's looking at Martin and Andante while she says it.

"Sure, as long as we can assure ourselves that the fox won't ever come back."

"James," says the old man. "Look."

James glances up from the river once more, just in time to see Rish hand Vapor a pair of deep purple crystalline scissors.

"What are those?" he asks, intrigued.

"Look closer."

"What does that mean?"

The old man sighed. "I will not always be give you answers, you know..."

"Fate be praised," muttered James, squinting to try and "see closer" - whatever that meant.

The old man laughed, and - suddenly - reality began to fade. All except for a single bright light where Vapor stood, bright enough to be blinding. James squinted his eyes and glanced away.

Look even closer, said the old man, his voice sounding echo-y and far away.

And so James did, forcing his eyes to stare into the brilliant crystal. He looked deep, as deep as he could, trying to see what it was that the old man wanted him to see.

Slowly, a pattern came into focus on the crystal's surface, marbled blue and white. It shifted and swirled mesmerizingly. Somehow James could tell that it wasn't just a surface pattern, but a reflection of what lay deeper inside - coded messages of its deepest, most hidden secrets.

"I see," he said. "But... why?"

The old man said nothing, but in his silence James could feel an invitation to keep watching. So he kept his eyes focused on the swirling patterns, trying not to let their ethereal beauty distract him.

And then - all of a sudden - they shattered, breaking apart and falling from the crystal structure. James gasped in shock, concentration broken.

"...what?" he choked out. "What was that?"

"Those," said the old man solemnly, "were the marks of a soul. Thoughts. Feelings. Memories."

James flicked horrified eyes at the fragments as they began to drift away from the now-spotless crystal.

"You mean..." he whispered, "she's gone? Erased?"

The old man didn't answer, only snapped his fingers. The fragmented blue shards began to switch direction, drifting towards James. They met in a point in front of him, rearranging and morphing into a single cohesive sapphire gemstone. He reached out, plucking it from the air, hands shaking slightly. This... this was all that was left of Vapor's soul. He didn't even know her that well, and now he was responsible for her life?

"Don't want to lose that, do we?" said the old man, and black mist spun up to take the gemstone from James' hands. "Don't worry, I know a place where it will be quite safe." Reluctantly, James relinquished the gemstone, letting it vanish into his shadow.

James suddenly felt an slight pressure on him. Not enough to be too uncomfortable, but not easy to ignore either.

"Ah," said the old man. "She's spotted you at last." James heart nearly froze in place before his shadow continued. "Don't worry, I wouldn't let her see you if I thought there was any chance you would be in danger. I die if you die, after all."

James shivered slightly. "Why can I feel it?"

"This is her world," said the old man with a shrug. "Her word is law. Her thought is law. Most people, I think, would not be able to feel the brush of her attention. But you are hardly most people. Especially not here."

The emphasis was strange. But James was too busy trying to shake off the uncanny feeling to notice.

Vapor straightened up. "I did exactly what you asked me to? Why is that not enough for you? I find myself in this place with no memories or anything, and you leave me to be beaten up by these strange creature thing, and then I make one mistake, and you say I'm not good enough?" She steps out of the water. "I'm leaving here." She reaches into her mind and finds a resource there, pulling her in. She looks back for one second at Rish, seeming scared. Alone, right before she is pulled into a strange room. Vapor stares around at the place. It is completely empty, just the shell of a room. Is this my mindscape? she thinks, looking around.

James gasped in surprise as he watched Vapor vanish.

"Hmm," said his shadow. "Interesting."

"Where did she go?" said James, feeling oddly worried.

"To her own world. Her mindscape, as they would call it." The shadow glided forward. "We shall follow her."

"Wait-" James began, wondering if such a thing would be tantamount to invading her mind. But his protest made no difference.

A moment after Vapor's appearance, James popped into the room behind her.

"Power," replied Psyder, glancing towards Herate to make sure she was listening. "Dyrlings contain innately the power to shape reality. When killed, that power can be extracted and utilized."

"For instance, to make blades like that one," replied Psyder, gesturing to the mordite blade he had given her earlier. "They are one of the most effective and surefire ways of dealing with creatures such as these. Hence, why it is so critical that we obtain some from this encounter."

"So it exists for itself. You use one you killed to make things to kill more. Smart."

"Well, to answer that in detail I'd have to teach you pretty much everything I know, and we don't have that long. Basically, runes that are made with this special dust will create magical effects like this." She traces a rune in the air and dust streams out of her bag into the air, then glows with a powerful light. "With some training you can start doing it without needing to draw it."
