"So," said James, after a moment of silence. "Who are you?"

The old man raised an eyebrow. "Why, I'm your shadow, of course. Surely you've figured that out?"

"Okay," said James. "So... why?"

"Why what?"

James gestured around. "Why did you want to come here? And why do you need me to do it?"

The old man leaned on a staff that materialized from the fog. "I am but a mere shadow. There is much I can no longer do alone."

James personally thought that this raised more questions than it answered. When he said he was a shadow- did he mean that literally, or figuratively? And if really wasn't all that powerful, how had he been able to defend James? Most importantly, he still hadn't answered James's most pressing question.

"Yes," he said, "but what is it that you need to do?"

The old man chuckled. "Why, the same thing you are here to do."

James sighed. Again, more questions than answers. Did the old man mean that he had a directive from Fate? Or did he know something about why James was here? Given his earlier comment, James was inclined to believe the latter. But Fate worked in mysterious ways, and there was no way of knowing for sure.

"Questioning my answers, are you?" said the old man, amusement glinting in his eyes. "Perhaps a visual is in order..."

The darkness around the pair deepened. Walls, furniture, ceiing - all vanished behind the thickening fog. James shivered as the temperature began to drop, and not just because of the chill. For as long as he could remember, darkness had been his biggest fear. Darkness, and the things that hid within.

But even so... it felt familiar. Natural, almost. And that terrified him more than anything.

Luckily for him, the darkness didn't last long. As quickly as it had set in, it began to fade once more. The surroundings began to come into focus, a tranquil forest lit by the surreal light of a full moon. A stream ran past James' feet, crystal clear water glowing silver with twice-reflected brilliance.

Across the river stood a tall and majestic woman that radiated power. Once glance at her was all James needed to know that this was the mysterious Rish that Vapor had spoken of. And speaking of Vapor- there she was, right besides Rish, gazing into the water. Tears were running down her face. James wondered what it was that she was seeing that affected her so deeply. He glanced into the water to see if he could catch a glimpse, but all he could see was a reflection.

"A prismatic mirror," said the old man, his picture rippling on the water as he stepped out from behind James. "Everyone sees something different... your young friend is, most likely, revisiting the past."

"Her family," said James softly, shifting his gaze back to the girl on the opposite side of the river. "The ones she lost."

The old man didn't respond, but James could feel affirmation emanate from him. James turned his gaze back into the water, looking at his reflection rippling on the water. If she can see the past... might I, as well? He focused, willing the picture to change, to show him the truth he'd lost. For a moment, he thought he could see an image ripple through his reflection. But perhaps it was only the white stones of the riverbed.

Vapor massages her head for a moment, then nods. She reaches back into her mind and pushes against her power, forcing it to shape the earth. Something seems to tug within her mind, and she cries out, holding her head. A series of images flash through her mind, fading. Her family. Her struggles on the streets. Her friends. Parts of them disappear, and she focuses her power on them, trying to hold them there. She struggles to remember names, feelings. "What did you do?" she asks Rish worriedly, coming out of her mind briefly as another flood of memories flows by, people missing from them. A final, clearer rush of recollections grows. Fadran, Queen, Nathrangking, Kindness, T, Ember, Vale, Spin, they all start to disappear. Herate, The Fox. Finally, Jeffrey and Jek. She frantically tries to hold them there, and they hold, struggling against the current of dreams. What she can remember of Jeffrey tugs away, following the other memories to an untouched, far corner of her mind. She could only remember Jek. She hadn't known him for very long, but she had cared about him. The memories of Jek began to strip off slowly, leaving one. The kiss. The current slows, and Vapor stares at the remaining memory confusedly. It seems familiar, as if from a dream. It flows down the stream in her mind, becoming forgotten. Vapor surfaces from her mind, staring at the figure before her. "Who are you?"

Spin hovers in the air next to Jek on the ship, thinking. A ripping feeling emanated from her center, and she sinks to the ground, becoming completely visible. Jek looks down, concerned. "I think something happened to Vapor," Spin says quietly, reaching to their bond. Instead of a long bridge, she finds a single string connecting them, and she knows if she were to try to cross it, it would fail.

Jeffery looked up sharply.

"What?" he exclaimed.

Rish rises from the ground as though her body has no substance. "I am Rishmvaeta, wielder of the power of mindscapes." She bows low. "All power has a price. Yours has been unlocked. The potential that was dormant is now awake. You can be the right hand of justice to defeat the forces that have released chaos on the realms. Will you join me in restoring order?"

Circestran's voice softly wafts around Fox. The whisper contains a warmth which creates an aura which dispels all cold. "I won't lie to you Fox, there is no magic which can do this. Even with all of my power I cannot make this happen. However, you need not do this alone. Nath and I can help you. Together we can overcome. You must look past the hatred. See it for the illusion that it is. It lies to you Fox. Look at what it has told you. Is any of it true? Together Fox. Together." She opens her arms as her tear drops to the ground.

Fox sighed. It seemed so simple... yet, in reality, it had to be so complicated. Why did everything have to be so complicated? Fox would consent to the hug, though she would not collapse into it. Instead, she sort of took a step forward, and leaned in. "I will... try." Fox said quietly. Though a part of her, a very small part of her, wondered if this lengthy process would even be worth living through. It seemed that every step forward included two steps backward.

Negative Null you are about to have a way out.

Rish sensed the intruder, but she ignores him. She detects the slightest hint of mime drifting through the air. It vanishes short of her as if hitting a hidden wall. Inwardly she sighs, but outwardly her face is stoic. "Let us begin." Obscuring and muffling fog rolls in. The whole landscape vanishes beneath an unnatural cloak. In the distance thunder booms. Winds start to blow gently. A wave of cold fills the land. "This mindscape as well as too many others were breached by the forces of chaos. Evil was allowed to enter this place. If the mindscapes are destroyed the powers of the ancient gods will be broken and with it the protection of all beings. Reach out with your powers and observe the breaches in this realm. Feel how they shudder and grow wider. Feel how power leaks away and immortals weaken. The realm will resist you and fight back. It will not want to change. Fight against it with all of your might. It will try and stop you any way that it can. Force it to heal. Chase away the rot and infection. Make whole again that which is broken." Rish sends away the guards standing at the mindscape breaches.

Circestran closes her arms around Fox. She breathes a warm whisper. "I can see your doubt. This will be a battle to be fought, but not alone. When you are alone fall you fall into darkness. When you are together with others hands will be there to help you up. You only lose when you stop fighting. You are a survivor Fox. This I know for Nath finds us survivors." She smiles slightly even though Fox cannot see it. "That you try is all that is needed. The past guides us Fox, but it does not control us unless we allow it to do so. Nath and I will not abandon you. We are something that cannot be taken away. We reside in your heart, mind, and soul. No one can wholly remove us. Even if we disappear Fox you will carry us with you always."

Maybe you should start cooking the sausage? That usually has to cook for a while...

Patch had somewhat expected some kind of guards or response as he opened the portal, but so far was pleasantly surprised to see his exit was going to go uncontested.
