PiedPiper she/her Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Does Pattern have a real name, one that he was given before he met Shallan? Syl knew what she was called when Kaladin asked her, so why is Pattern different? Does this have something to do with Syl being the Ancient Daughter, or is it a difference between Cryptics and Honorspren, or is there some other difference I'm missing?

PiedPiper she/her Posted May 19, 2020 Author Posted May 19, 2020 Right -- I vaguely remember reading that (great job paying attention, me!). Thanks.
Honorless he/him Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 Karger is correct, Pattern talks to Shallan and is given his nickname after Jasnah's assassination and the sinking of the ship, while she was on her way to the Shattered Plains. She was with the caravan during this and Pattern was talking about the nature of spren.
Aminar Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 I assume Cryptics names are the mathematical patterns behind their fractal appearance. Not just 1s and 0s but literally like the fibonachi sequence.

jamskinner Posted May 19, 2020 Posted May 19, 2020 (edited) maybe a fractal like mandelbrot. It is not actually to hard to make. example example 2 Edited May 19, 2020 by jamskinner 1
