I've found it's a fool's errand to try and find the source of a meme. By the time they become viral it's already impossible. That's why some people use watermarks. They're not entirely trustworthy but it's the closest we have.

This is true, but if it's possible to track them back or not crop the names out or anything, that'd be great. I know it's not always possible and that's fine, just a general hope.

Reverse image search can be your friend for sourcing, although it might take a little. I guess if it's just a hope you're fine.
