Eran of Arcadia Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 I mean, if we're talking Donner Party/plane-crash-in-the-Andes style survival cannibalism, I don't think there's anything that prohibits it. Killing some rando so you can eat them is right out, of course. 1

Through The Living Glass She/They Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Did anyone else watch the Christmas Devotional? I really liked Elder Cook's talk. 1
The Wandering Wizard he/him Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Yes!!! It was very beautiful and I loved all the talks <33 1
+Slowswift Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I missed it as I was at work, but I heard Pres. Oaks' talk on the way home and loved it. 1
Bird Furious she/her/un/important Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I listened to most of it, and it was pretty nice. Loud sibs though. 1

Wittles he/him Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Time is...Idk what it is but it's weird. I started filling out my mission papers and stuff today, and it really hit me that in less than a year I'm gonna be an adult, off on a mission and doing adult things. I'm really excited though 4
Eran of Arcadia Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Haha you don't have to be an adult to be a missionary. I spent half my mission daydreaming about dinosaurs. 6
Mason Wheeler Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) On 12/30/2024 at 9:54 AM, Eran of Arcadia said: Haha you don't have to be an adult to be a missionary. I would respectfully disagree, and point to 1 Cor. 13: 11. I knew some missionaries who remained attached to childish attitudes while in the field. Four immediately come to mind. I had three of them as companions over my two years and the fourth served in the same district as me, and each time I was with one of them, we weren't able to really get anything done in terms of teaching people and doing the work of the Lord, because they were too busy screwing around. Two of the four ended up being sent home early, one of them due to injuries sustained in a recreational activity he probably should have known better than to try, and the other due to some really egregious violations of mission rules and Gospel rules in general, the sort of stuff that could well have also cost him his membership. If you're about to put your papers in, grow up. Learn to be a mature adult now, so you'll be ready when you find yourself needing to out in the field. Because you will need to. Satan is real, and he will throw opposition at you in ways you never expected. So put your armor on and get used to wearing it, so you'll have it when the time comes. Eran of Arcadia Posted January 11, 2025 Posted January 11, 2025 Has anyone read this article? I saw it on Reddit but I didn't want to talk about it there - Reddit doesn't like the church very much, and anyways they kind of think of religion and politics in rather binary terms over there. One thing I have observed is that people see the way he writes Jasnah and assume that means he's secretly an atheist. Never mind that he writes religiously devout characters just as well - apparently both theists and atheists can write theist characters, but only atheists can write atheist characters, or some such. I really do admire how well he writes other voices than his own, but I'm not sure I always agree with him on what is often called "progressivism." Thoughts?

From the article: Quote I created Renarin as a character long before this was as much of a hot-button issue as it is now; a time when I leaned a different direction politically. This was always going to be his path. ... My plan was for Renarin to be gay when I wrote Way of Kings Prime in 2002. This seems less than perfectly credible, for one very simple reason: if you've read it, you'll know that the Renarin character in Way of Kings Prime dies in the first book, before he ever gets much of a "path" at all. No exploration whatsoever is made of his love life or sexual preferences. The thing that really worries me is that he's said (elsewhere, not in this article,) that these are his beliefs and he wants the Church to come around to accepting them. From a purely objective standpoint, that I really don't want to apply to any specific person but the facts are what they are, that is basically the very definition of apostasy. And that kind of freaks me out.
+Slowswift Posted January 21, 2025 Posted January 21, 2025 We sang a Tongan hymn in sacrament meeting yesterday! And as long as you don't try to claim revelation for the church as a whole or claim you know better than God, I don't mind individual members having their own "personal apostasies". I do lean conservative, but Brandon's writing has so far been good enough that I truly don't care if our politics or social views diverge--that's universally acclaimed as one of his greatest strengths. If that ever changes, that's when I'll be worried. 4

I also think that based on his goal of inviting people in as stated in another article, it was probably not a bad idea to include a little bit of those ideas in his work. My personal philosophy is against that sort of thing, but I think it makes sense for his goals in writing and I respect that aspect of it. 1

This Sunday in my ward, one of the speakers was a heavily pregnant sister. She opened with, "when the Bishop asked me to speak to you this week, I told him I would unless the baby decided to come first. It seems God has listened to his prayers more than to mine." 3

I don't necessarily agree with the political side of things, but I do agree that we should show love and appreciation to our fellow man. Charity is the pure love of Christ, y'know? Mason Wheeler Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 Did anyone else from here catch the inauguration yesterday? I was a bit surprised to see, towards the end, a military band and choir performing, very specifically, the Tabernacle Choir's version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. That's a very distinctive arrangement, and a famous one; the Choir won a Grammy for it! 3

It's a shame the Choir themselves couldn't be there, but the Navy singers did a fine job. (To be a bit pedantic, that arrangement didn't originate with the Choir, though they certainly have the canonical performance.)
