"Ah, nothing," Karin replied to Sarah, shaking her head. "It's a quote from some old book from my world, one that became well known enough that even people like me who never read it know it. It's not even that appropriate if you consider the actual context from where it appears in the book. It just seemed somewhat fitting, that's all."

Sarah nodded slowly. "What world are you from?" She asked.

Whisper toyed with the small tracking device that she'd been handed, looking it over curiously. She wasn't particularly well-read, especially not in technological advancements like this, which ruled out any attempt to tamper with it or understand exactly how it worked, but she may still find a use for it. If nothing else it would be good for others to think they had a way to track her, one of the easiest ways to hide was for someone to think they knew exactly where you were.

A cold shiver ran down her back as she pinned the tracking device to her shirt, the same sensation from yesterday. She gave no obvious sign, but she ducked her head a little and pretended to fidget with the tracker. Through the dangling strands of hair that covered her face she snuck a few glances up at her surroundings, flicking towards each of the people nearby. A few were looking in her direction, but they weren't really watching her, it was a small difference, and not an easy one to learn, but she dismissed all of them as being the source.

Her eyes flickered up again, catching sight of a figure that she'd already checked, but something drew her attention back. A young woman, lightly tanned, a little shorter than those around her. She was difficult to notice, casual and ordinary enough that Whispers eyes had skipped straight over her initially, but there was something about the way that she was looking that was a little different from the others, this was someone who was truly watching.

But what to do about that?

It was possible that it was simply someone who'd seen her descent and was curious, or wondering why someone so young had signed up to be a part of the expedition. It could also have been someone from one of the guilds, but Whisper wasn't likely to be a priority for observation from any of them, it was rare that she actively interfered with any of the guilds other than that time at the church. That left something more personal, but she didn't recognise the figure from anywhere. So what was left?

She lifted her head, allowing her hair to drift back to the sides of her face and reveal her eyes as she stared straight back at the woman. Sometimes all you could do was provoke them and try to draw out some more information from their reaction.

When he was given the overalls, he refused. "What I have here will be fine. " He had no need for them, and even if he did they were beneath him, though he did attach the tracker to the inside of his robes, there was no reason to refuse that.

Althea looked over those assembled. She had been accepted into the team, and she was still trying to sort her feelings in that regard. Without saying something she joined Adren again, planed to finish their conversation. Things had picked up, after the announcement of the members, with the preparations to meet here, to get everything ready and sorted.

"To answer your question." She said instead of a greeting. "Yes, I do have a few watching the company on the surface. What good that will do."

She tried to recognize a few familiar faces, commited those that were already here to her memory. "I have to admit I am a bit unsure, what they expect us to do now." She told him, and watched a young woman receive a tablet and then join another group of people. "But to adress another concern of yours, I agree, the tunnels would be a possiblity to get of us. Thankfully I am hard to imprison."

At least as long as she had access to stormlight. Without, she was helpless as a mouse. Nothing she'd advertise, although she knew, that she had to be careful. If she ran out of spheres down there, the consequences would be grave. As usual she caried a bag of spheres, made sure to do nothing to highlight her bracelet. Devaan's advice was sound. It was better to have two different supplies, one only accessable by her, instead of relying completely on a bag with spheres that could be stolen easily.

Adren, walking heavily into the pit, obtains one the of trackers and puts in his pack. Boots crunching across the uneven ground, walking over to Althea.

"Hard to imprison is A pretty good skill. But can be a hard one to test. I am fairly easy to imprison once I am captured, with almost all my breath in these two and my only other magic being a couple small unlocked goldminds I picked up in case I sprain myself ," He says, gestureing to Mercy and Jethro. "But," He continued, taking off a pair of sunglasses, I have more than my fair share of practice avoiding capture."

"You haven't told me this story. I want to hear."

"There is probably reason he didn't tell us Mercy. Leave it alone"

"What is your plan for down the caverns Althea?" Adren asked without guile.

Althea received her equipment as well, looked it over. Technical devices. Well, as long as they worked she was fine with them - if they stopped working she had no idea how to repair them. She knew how to use these kind of things, everything else wasn't really hers. Without hesitating she looked at the overall, and then hung it over her arm for the moment. She wouldn't change in front of all of them, definitely not.

She looked over at him taking out his sunglasses and lifted a finger to tap against her own. "If we wear long dark coats as well, then we look like we stepped out of a movie." Alas, her coat was grey. A hard black usually didn't look good with her pale complexion.

"I don't really have a plan for down there. I figured I could take a look around, maybe see if I can find something interesting." Pausing she looked at him again. "When things go south and you want to escape - hard to imprison can extend to others as well."

She offered, carefully watching his face to observe his reactions.

I'd suggest PMing one of the admins, or posting in the tech support sub-forum. They should be able to help you get access to your old account, or at least make sure you don't accidentally get banned for having multiple accounts.

Wes accepted the overalls gratefully and allowed the assistants to show him where to place the tracking nodes. Wes wasn’t too worried about them, just a quick look and he was able to tell they wouldn’t be too hard to modify or control if he wanted it. But overall they were very nice pieces of work.

“Did you guys use a Nalthian circuit on this?” He asked. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen one configured to a tracker before.”

The assistant just shrugged and Wes walked forward, towards the centre sort of area of the crater base. He wanted to put on his overalls... but his cloak. He couldn’t just leave his cloak here, could he? No, he couldn’t. What parts the overalls didn’t cover, the cloak would have to. Wes needed the cloak.

He looked around for the leader or director he had heard about and — woah, she was floating in midair. Scratching his head Wes scuttled into view, trying and failing to not be intimidated by the casual display of power.

“Um, excuse me?” He asked.

“Can I wear this cloak over my overalls, bring it with me down there? I was just wondering, because, you know, I don’t want to disobey any rules you set or anything.” He paled a little at the thought and pointed at his tracking node.

“This is really well built, though.”

He made a post on the tech support thing. Ahead of the curve!

Also, to note, I will be doing stuff with Stancel really quickly to help a little.

Deb slowly released steel, lowering herself to the ground once more, and held out a folded piece of paper she pulled from within a pocket. "So long as you sign this waiver that acknowledges you accept the risks of wearing unauthorized gear into an uncertain situation, you may wear whatever you like."

An assistant ran up and tapped her on the shoulder, then began whispering in her ear. "Ah. Very good. Thank you, Reiken." She Pushed back off the steel frame and took a deep breath. "Attention everyone! We will be leaving in 30 minutes, so please make all final arrangements now and be prepared at the end of that time to begin the descent. Again, that is 30 minutes until we depart. Please be ready."

With a loud grind of servo-gears, Bulveye lumbered over to her. She was fingering a yellow object and frowning at it.

"Heil ok sæl," he said over her shoulder. "How are you, stranger, on this fine day?"

A voice Myriad didn’t know said something in a language that she also didn’t know, and her head whipped around to stare behind her as the man went on to ask her how she was. He wore actual armor, and it included mechanical parts, so it probably wasn’t from one of the medieval worlds...another Earth, maybe? She’d heard that there were some with better technology than her own had obtained.

“I’m doing well,” she said, trying to shake off her surprise. “How are you?”

"My blood runs hot," Bulveye said, "and my blade is sharp. A Seawolf could not ask for more."

He hefted his axe, Morkai, onto his shoulder, and smiled at the small human.

"I am Bulveye," he said. "I am called Ghost-stalker and tyrant-killer, and I made my first kill on the shores of the Iron Island. I have fought xenos and heretics alike for three centuries, and been a Wolf Guard for one more. My saga is legend, and my deeds are worthy of Russ himself."

He paused, waiting for her reply.

Corette watched the girl stiffen slightly, her light eyes scanning the crowd before coming to rest on her. Her gaze was firm and deep - not quite a challenge, but not far off. I know, that look said, and Corette felt a small smile touch the corners of her mouth.

Not many people could feel a Seeker's touch, and that made this girl special. Which in turn made her interesting. There was something slightly familiar about her - perhaps Corette had seen her on the street. Alleycity was a big place, but precious little of it hadn't felt the tread of Corette's boots. Corette stared back at the girl, unashamed, then gave her a small nod. Well done.  @Voidus

Just then, the Director's sharp voice cut through the air, and Corette felt her smile widen at the news. She stopped storing her breath, hefting her pack before making her way over to the small group that had already begun assembling by the descent shaft. ACE had started sending down equipment, rations and the first vanguard of security about ten minutes ago, and the mineshaft elevator whined at the heavy load. It layered over the calls, thumps and shuffling of several dozen pairs of feet. Corette's Bronze gave the operation a whole other spectrum of sensation, each person their own collection of beats, each a different rhythm.

Corette tapped the toe of her boot on the hard-packed earth before walking towards two nearby people: a young woman and a grizzled older man in mechanic armor. Both gave off fascinating Bronze signatures, and for a moment Corette was content to simply listen to them. The girl, in particular, was unique, the pulses almost seeming to echo, as though her soul was not properly anchored to her body. Fascinating, all so fascinating.

She listened to the man detail some of his exploits, raising a brow. She'd met a fellow similar to this man a few years back, in a tavern on the city's east end. He had spoken of battles through space and time, unspeakable horrors, demons of chaos and the glory of battle. Corette wasn't too keen on battles herself, but she was always keen on stories, and this man looked like he had them by the bucketful.

"This Iron Island," she cut in, not waiting for the other woman's reply. "Is it on this world, or another?"

"Not 'Iron Island'," he said, glancing back at her. "It is properly called the Isle of the Iron Masters." Bulveye shrugged. "And Fenris, my home, is far, far from here. Practically in another galaxy. But, as your eyes are frozen, your ignorance can be forgiven."

Fenris. The Fang. Even after two decades of separation, Bulveye still missed his home. The intensity of that longing surprised him.

Myriad only understood about half the words the giant, armored man - he’d called himself a sea guard wolf thing? - said, but the words Ghost-stalker made her freeze. She had been told by the first yellow-glowing figure she met that they and others like them were called poltergeists, but that most would know them best as ghosts. And Bulveye killed ghosts?

Trying to do it discreetly but knowing the sad extent of her training in these matters, Myriad scanned the man. She could probably Bolt into him if he came at her. She couldn’t see any exposed skin besides his head right now, but moving to a new body didn’t require it. She wasn’t even sure it required touch; she hadn’t done much experimenting along that vein. She resolved to later.

A woman came over to them and started asking Bulveye questions, and Myriad was happy to let her. Less interaction with someone who might try to hunt you down was always good in her opinion. She listened to them quietly in case either brought her into the conversation, but didn’t engage them herself. It was interesting, though, what they said. Other galaxies, she thought idly. There must be so many places I have to learn about...

Frozen? My eyes? Corette forced her expression to stay carefully blank, looking up at the soldier. She was well aware of other galaxies and their various travelers; living one's entire life in the Alleycity tended to scrub most of the veils from a person's eyes. Corette felt the familiar prickle of excitement and fascination at the mention of a new world. Just because she was familiar with the idea of other universes didn't make it any less incredible. She filed away the name of his home, allowing some of the interest to creep into her eyes.

"What do you think of the city?" She asked him. Corette had found that this question typically elicited more information about a person than more direct questions about themselves. Whether they loved it or hated it here, newcomers always had something to say about Alleycity.

----

Deb watched as the last of the equipment was lowered down the mine shaft elevator, disappearing with a low, mechanic whir. She checked her watch. Eight-thirty. With a tiny nod, she slid her clipboard under her arm and gestured to one of the clerks nearby. He dutifully held up a megaphone - and his reach fell about three feet too short. He looked up at her with a tight frown.

Right, Steel. Deb let up a bit on her Steelpush, slowly lowering until she could reach the megaphone. "Thank you Reubens," she said, giving him a slightly apologetic nod before shooting back up to her original height.

"Attention," she spoke into the megaphone, which carried her voice through the crater. "We are ready to commence descent into the cavern system. Please form an orderly line next to the main shaft and prepare to board the elevator. No - you there, yes you, with the blue hair - yes, you, yes, please get away from the edge. Yes, thank you. As I was saying, make your way next to the shaft, please do not enter the caverns or the elevator. Make sure you have all your belongings; privies are located on the western edge of the crater. This is a last warning - if you do not line up within the next few minutes, we will leave you behind. Thank you."

That done, she slowly lowered herself to the ground and gathered her own belongings. She sighed, handed her clipboard and megaphone to Reubens, and slung her pack over her shoulders.
