We know that spanreeds function by splitting a gem, and that fabriels function by trapping spren. This leaves me with the question “ is the spren trapped before or after the gem is split? And if before what would the ramifications be for the spren?”

How could you trap a spren with half a gem, and both halfs would need to catch one, but they would be different spren so it wouldn't work. Logic says that the spren would be caught with a full gem, that split apart into two identical spren. This is only a theory but it makes sense that the spren would be caught before and not after.

I am with flute.  You have to split it first.  The ramifications are that the spren has not been split only the gem.

The spren would have to be captured first.  Its the "splitting" of the spren that cases the conjoined fabrials to move together, at least in my mind.

You move one pen, and the spren in the pen moves with it, so the other "half" of the spren would similarly move with the other reed.

Now, I have no idea why reversers would work they way they do, but I'm sticking with this theory.

I hope this all makes sense, I'm *suuuuupppeeeerrrr* tired right now and my brain is at like 15% capacity, firing on one cylinder.

I think the spren is trapped first...

But it may not be a matter of actually dividing the spren itself. There are analogies between how spren work and quantum phenomena (flamespren being "fixed" by the act of measuring them). I think what's going on with pairing fabrials is meant to be analogous to quantum entanglement, "spooky action at a distance". If that's correct, then the spren may be kind of in a "Schrodinger's Cat" both-and-neither state, kind of attached to both halves of the gem, but not 100% in either one.

I could get behind that.  We were told spren wouldnt be able to split their bodies, but in the context of a sapient spren transforming into a pair of weapons.  It seems to be that lesser spren are more amenable to changing by mundane means (split a rock and get two rocks with their own spren) and/or are less attached to their former Identity (if the Plate=Lesser spren theory is true).  I wonder if the "special way" they split the gem is similar to making a Cognitive Shadow, in that you simly add extra Investment and it gives the Identity of the original Whole gem more longevity.

And, even if this is correct, the spren itself might not actually split in the same sense as a Radiantspren forming two Shardblades simultaneously.

In the quantum analogy, an electron doesn't become multiple electrons, there's just a certain probability of finding it in any of multiple locations - but if the wavefunction isn't collapsed it's kind-of in a blurred state of all those probabilities being true/not true. (In the Copenhagen interpretation anyway).

The same might apply here, the spren being "wavefunction blurred" overlap of being in this half and being in that half, but not actually becoming two spren each in a separate ruby piece.
